Mariama Abdou helps her daughter, Samsiya Idiy, take antimalarial medicine in the town of Illela during the third cycle of Niger's seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaign.
Samsiya loves to play with dolls and pretend she is a chef. As her mother says, "a healthy child makes a happy home."
SMC is a campaign style public health intervention to prevent and treat malaria infection in young children living in the Sahel region of Africa. SMC involves giving an antimalarial medicine at monthly intervals during the rainy season when malaria transmission spikes. The goal is to treat any existing infections and maintain protective drug concentrations in the blood throughout a complete transmission season.
