Looking back on a summer's past sunset to remember, I came across this one I took at Hillsdale Lake, in Kansas. This lake like many large lakes are made by the Army Corps of Engineers.

I recently returned from 2 great days in southwestern West Virginia for fall colors.

This mill gives you something different every year with all the incredible fall colors surrounding it.

I was in the area of southeastern US for the past week and when there I always make it a point to visit both areas at sunrise and sunset.

There are two beach areas which are great for sunrise shooting and sunsets. The trick is to time it so that the tide is well out around sunrise...which isn't easy, as the shooting at the right exposure to produce that nice swishing water around these trees produces one incredible photo after another.

Though my luck wasn't with me with regards to the tide at the right time I still had some great pre-sunrise light which I was real happy with.

I plan to conduct a two day photography "Meetup" here in March 2023. It will include arriving early to photograph the Milky Way rising above the ocean and the tree(s) as I accent the tree with what is called "LLL" or low level lighting.

This past early March 2022 I made my second trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina along the ocean to photograph the Milky Way rising in the eastern sky.

The first morning I went further south to a site I've been wanting to shoot a time lapse of the Milky Way rising over the ocean and I'm happy to say I accomplished that.

▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀

Looking at my PhotoPills app on my iPhone, given what phase the moon is in over the last week in May, I will be returning to the ocean along the Outer Banks of North Carolina for more Milky Way phototography.

The one good thing about this is that the core of the Milky Way is now rising above the eastern horizon around 11:30pm, give or take.

I recently returned from Iceland where I scouted and photographed so many different sites, documenting everything as I went along.

On the early evening of July 25, we were along the southwest side of the Grundarfjörður Peninsula at Arnastapi and Hellnar shooting a rock sea arch where in one area I captured a number of photos of those cute Puffins (photos to be uploaded at a later time).

What amazed me about the Puffins is that they'd take off from their perches like a rocket, fly out a couple hundred yards and return. I swear they were flying faster than the seagulls in the area. It was definitely fun to watch.

However, the main objective would be to find and scout another sea arch on the northern side of this peninsula and then move on to photograph Mt. Kirkjufell by Kirkjufellfoss.

We found the 2nd arch and took off for about a 30 minute drive to photograph the impending sunset behind the mountain from the waterfalls.

While most photograph this from the top of the falls (which I did), I went down to the base of the falls, caught a little spray and took a number of photos.

Here's one of my takes of Kirkjufellfoss at sunset which was taken about 35 minutes or more after sunset which at that time was around 11:10pm.

From March 5 through 13, I will conduct two 4 night Milky Way night sky photography workshops in Arches National Park, Moab, Utah (USA).

During each workshop, I will take my participants to numerous places throughout the park and on one day we'll travel down to Monument Valley and a couple of areas for more Milky Way photography.

Also, during these 4 night photography workshops, I will conduct two 4 hour Photoshop Milky Way post processing sessions. We'll all work on the same photos together and slowly go through the various Photoshop and camera raw techniques I use to bring help you produce a memorable photo. It will be a lot of fun.

I recently returned from scouting out and photographing numerous sites around Lake Tahoe, California and many sites in the Eastern Sierras this past week. I will have a few more photos to upload over the next two weeks or so.

Here's a shot I took as I light painted "The Rock" from the left side of my camera just as the moon was going over the western horizon.

In 2017, I will have two 4 night Milky Way photography workshop in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, one over the 3rd week in March and one over the 3rd week in April. In early June 2018, I was in the American southwest where I visited Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, the Canyonlands, Goblin Valley State Park, Monument Valley and several other areas. However, I did so only after the 4 day workshop I conducted at the time was over then I was free to enjoy everything by myself.

One of my main objectives was to photograph the Milky Way over a couple monuments that are not easily reached if you do not have a 4WD.

I wanted to return later this year to this area but we all know what got in the way and knocked that out.

I will return to the southwest in 2021 where I'll conduct several workshops and while doing so I will cover shooting the human element for Milky Way night sky images. It's going to be fun.

We went to many different areas scouting and documenting areas for our March 3-5, 2019 workshop there. Having completed that, we are prepared for the workshop which btw immediately follows our already sold out workshop in Moab, Utah, Arches National Park, Canyonlands from February 28 to March 3.

If you have been to Capital Reef and have not photographed this scene from this site then you are truly missing a unique and iconic site. The first light of the sun as it comes over the horizon is really amazing. Three hours earlier we photographed the Milky Way rising over this same canyon overlook.

I now finally have time to catch up on copying all my Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Colorado fall photos from my recent to photo trips to my external hard drive ... seems like it's taking forever !

Over time I will post photos from my Oct. 1-5, 2015 Jackson Hole fall photo trip but I thought I'd first post a photo from my Oct. 9-14, 2015 Colorado fall color photo trip first where the light was just extraordinary ... but that's the norm for Colorado's fall colors.

If you plan to go to Colorado next year and want to meet up for a day and head out early to shoot the colors or if you want to get together and shoot the Milky Way at night in some really nice areas let me know.

I have always said Jackson Hole, Wyoming (USA) is beautiful in the fall but Colorado is simply awesome in the fall !

In just over two months, I'll be back in the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming running all over Grand Teton National Park.

It will be the time when the wildflowers will be back and scenes like this will once again be before the camera.

This past July I went to Iceland with one of my previous photography workshop attendees where I scouted and photographed so many different sites, documenting everything as I went along.

There are simply too many incredible waterfalls in Iceland to name and we visited a good number of them.

The sunsets and I should say the time leading up to the actually sunset at this time of year is quite long and if you have great clouds and light you are in for a real treat when you visit Iceland.

Although the sun sat around 11:10pm, the incredible light lasted until after midnight for some great extended photography.

In early March 2019, I was in the American southwest where I visited Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, the Canyonlands, Goblin Valley State Park, Monument Valley and several other areas. However, I did so only after the 4 day workshop I conducted at the time was over then I was free to enjoy everything by myself.

One of my main objectives was to photograph the Milky Way over The Mittens again in Monument Valley.

I wanted to return later this year to this area but we all know what got in the way and knocked that out.

I will return to the southwest in 2021 where I'll conduct several workshops and while doing so I will cover shooting the human element for Milky Way night sky images as you see in this photo. It's going to be fun.

On September 28th, 2021 I will arrived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming just in time for an early dinner before heading out for my sunset site and follow-up Milky Way photo site.

I met up with a Facebook friend of mine and we were out just a little past midnight on a perfectly clear sky.

This time around I concentrated on photographing the Milky Way over a few lakes but of course I had to return to a few of my ol' faithful sites like the southern Moulton Barn which you see here.

While at the barn another photographer came by and had a Nanlite LitoLite 5C RGBWW color temperature controllable light panel. And it seem to nicely light the barn during his brief stay at the site.

In 2022, I plan to return in late September to conduct a three day photography workshop there which will include at least two night of Milky Way photography and of course I will conduct a Photoshop Milky Way post-processing class.

North Window and Turrent Arch

In March 2014 I was in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah for the start of the new Milky Way season.

At that time, the use of low level lighting was allowed to accent light the arches and monuments. However, it is now band to everyone. So now, we use the crescent moon to provide beautiful accent lighting for our subjects.

I took a longer exposure than normal to smooth out the wave action on the water..although the sun was at least 10 minutes from actual sunrise the light was really intense in those last 10-15 minutes.

Aspen Colorado

Have you visited Colorado (USA) for the fall colors? If not, this is one state I would highly recommend visiting. You should check out the following areas: Aspen, Ridgway, Dallas Divide, Ouray, Silverton and Telluride for sure. You will be amazed!

Colorado Fall Light

In late September 2014 I was in Colorado for the fall color season. I photographed many places in and around McClure Pass, Ridgway, the Dallas Divide, Ouray, Aspen and Telluride and then some. This was my fourth year of doing so.

View on Black at Fluidr

Here you see the stream generated a little further up by water flowing from Phelps Lake just north of Wilson below the bridge along Wilson Rd. Wilson Rd is a few miles west of Jackson, WY (USA) and it takes you north along a very wooded drive where you're apt to see moose, bear and rare type owls. In early June, this stream is really hauling. I used a longer than usual exposure with a combination of the Singh-Ray reverse GND and a Sing-Ray 3-stop GND.

I recently returned from 8 great days in Colorado for the 2018 fall color season. I photographed the fall colors in many places in and around the Dallas Divide, Ouray and Telluride and then some. This was my fourth year of doing so.

After shooting the Colorado fall colors, I drove down to Arches National Park where I hiked to some nice places and at various locations photographed the Milky Way in the southwestern sky before the Milky Way season comes to an end.

On Sunday May 23rd I flew to Spokane, WA for a Monday photo workshop with one of the northwest great photographers Chip Phillips...nicest guy you'll ever meet. I arose from bed the 24th at 2:45am and was on the road traveling south out of Spokane for an hour or so drive to meet up with Chip. As I was driving, I looked east and noticed the first glimmer of light from the sun and guess what ... it was only 3:30am!!! I arrived at our scheduled meeting location at 4:30a. Within a short time Chip drove up and we took off to our first location to set up for our photo shoot. Believe me, he knows his 5D MII inside and out and histograms...if you don't know how to use them (or get to them on your camera) you definitely will !!! After the first round of shots, we moved further south for a 2nd location and by noon we stopped for lunch at a nice cafe and critiqued photos and discussed photo tools and techniques. Afterwards, we headed to our final shooting location - Palouse Falls and what a beauty it was! We shot here until a little after sunset and finally finished around 9pm. What a great day it was! This is one photo of many resulting from my photo workshop with Chip. And lastly...Chip...I'll always be thankful for the wealth of knowledge I gained that day from you.

While in Jackson, WY, drive north of town along Rt 191, passing the airport entrance on the left. Take a left when you see the sign for "Moose". This will be the road for entering Teton National Park. Pay the weekly fee then drive a few miles to the parking lot for the "Taggart Lake" trailhead.

Follow the trail for about 1.5m and take a left when you hit the trail that circles the lake and walk about a 100 or so feet and then cut to the lake's edge for this scene.

Also, on days when it is not windy early in the morning if you want to capture a glass reflection like this you need to be at the lake within 2.5 or so after sunrise as if you get there later then a gentle breeze comes over the lake and then the mirror will be lost until a little before sunset.

In late May I took a full day photo workshop with Chip Phillips. It started around 4:30am and ended at 9pm. Having seen Chip's photos of this area, I just had to visit the area but I did so with one of the best photographers of the Northwest. I had a great time and learned a lot from his workshop...which I'd highly recommend.

This is looking NE from the north side of StepToe Butte.

Yes, the title is a taken from the 1941 John Ford movie "How Green Was My Valley" with the wonderful Maureen O'Hara based on the 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn.

I'm just looking back at a few past March mornings at Mesa Arch in the Canyonlands of Utah.

That morning was unusual in that I was the only one there. The majority of other times I've been here it was just a zoo! But not this one day and it was great!

During the fall season of 2016, I flew to Colorado where I photographed the incredible colorful Aspen trees with snow capped mountains.

After shooting the colors in CO for 6 days, I drove drove down to Moab, Utah for the 2nd time this year. However, this visit I was able to photograph the Milky Way almost vertical to the foreground as it was seen in the southwestern night sky.

Here's one of my many Milky Way night sky photos with Balanced Rock I took around October 4.

For those attending my two ANP MW workshops in 2017, one over the 3rd week in March and the second over the 3rd week in April, I will be bringing everyone here for their own take of Balanced Rock with the Milky Way but in the eastern sky.

For all Milky Way night sky photography work, I will be bringing specialized lights to either accent light or light paint the arches and monuments you will photograph.

In 2017, I will be leading two 4 day photography workshops in Jackson Hole. During both workshops, I will take my group out for 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky workshop.

This lake being the source of the Green River and a river along which there were several historic mountain men rendezvous between the late 1820s and the mid 1830s. Near the small town of Daniel just west of Pinedale a monument was erected on a bluff overlooking the Green River below where 1000s gathered for the fur trading business...a big sky beautiful area.

About 2 miles west of Pinedale, WY, you turn right on Rt. 352 or if you're traveling from Jackson Hole, WY to Pinedale you turn left on Rt. 352. You travel a good distance on asphalt until you come to the Bridger National Forest entrance. From this point you drive on (improved) dirt ! for about 17 miles.

This photo was taken about 1.5 miles before the camping entrance...a short distance beyond the camp entrance is the NPS cabin on the hill overlooking the first and western most Green River lake. The cloud is actually coming from the lake ... Beware ! There are grizzly bears here!

In March 2017, Ryan Smith (fb photographer friend) and I conducted our first workshop together in Arches National Park.

Once we get to our site, I set up the low level accent lights as Ryan ensures everyones camera setting are ready to go and everyone has their composition set.

Since so many like the human element photo I took 2-3 years earlier at the North Window, we usually do that for each of our workshop groups before moving on to other compositions with the arches and the Milky Way.

Before the workshop began, we went to many different areas scouting and documenting areas for the workshop there. Having completed that, we were ready for the fun to begin.

I recently returned from Jackson Hole, WY where I conducted my 4 day photography workshop along with 3 nights of my Milky Way night sky photography workshop..

An hour and a half before the fireworks began, photographer and workshop instructor Matt Suess met up with me at the Elk Refuge overlook deck just north of Jackson where we photographed the fireworks and at a later time after the fireworks were over I photographed the Milky Way over Snow King Mountain on the south side of town.

Here's my take of that night.

I recently returned from 8 great days in Colorado for the 2018 fall color season. I photographed the fall colors in many places in and around Ridgway, the Dallas Divide, Ouray and Telluride and then some. This was my fourth year of doing so.

I met up with a couple fine photographers (Ryan Smith and Nick Selway) for about 5 days and had a great time.

In the past, I'd shoot the fall colors in Jackson Hole, Wyoming but I have to admit that while the fall colors are really nice in Jackson Hole, you are truly missing great fall colors if you have not been to Colorado.

Here is a capture from a little secret area I always like to visit in the McClure's Pass area, an area you cannot see from the road. You just have to know where it is.

In this photo I set up the light painted human element scene. I used one of my simple and very effective techniques to light paint the roof and interior of the North Window.

Twenty-five days and counting.

Time is passing quickly and on February 26th, I return to Arches National park where one of Utah's finest photographers and I will conduct two back-to-back workshops.

While there we'll take our group to key sites in the Park but also places east of Moab then finally to Canyonlands, Goblin Valley State Park and an area a little east of Capital Reef National Park which is where we'll be with the 2nd workshop.

Here's a composite of the Northern Window and the Milky Way.

During my March 4-11, 2014 photo shoot in Moab, Utah (USA) and other nearby national and state parks, I wanted to expand my Milky Way night sky photography to include this part of the southwest. So on different nights, I photographed the Milky Way over numerous arches and monuments and because I did, the night sky went into the morning blue hour to sunrise with the result that I did not get a lot of sleep during the entire trip because even during the day I was constantly on the move.

A couple had arrived at "The Windows" in Arches National Park shortly after I did for night sky work, so we turned into a small team and went to different sites for Milky Way shots.

In this scene, I let them walk up to the northern window of "The Windows" and I signaled them to hold in place for my shot as they looked at the Milky Way rising in the eastern sky. This is one example of where you do not want to light paint an arch or monument ... it would have had a totally different and probably not as interesting effect if I had.

In 2015, I will be conducting multiple night sky / Milky Way workshops in Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. Should you be there at the end of March, please consider joining me for one or more nights as we photograph numerous sites throughout the park and other places.

My first 2014 photography trip to the Teton Mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyoming and to Grand Teton National Park was from May 15-19. The ice on many of the larger lakes were starting to melt. Jackson Lake was still half frozen.

As I made my usual rounds to check out various sites, I was driving along Shadow Mountain Road a little over a mile north of the Antelope Flats Road stop sign.

Up to that time, Jackson Hole was receiving frequent rains. Hence, I wanted to check out various shallow ponds and pools that I knew would have water and present a nice reflection of the Teton Mountains.

So I visited the Shadow Mountain Road reflecting pools and took this 4 shot pano of the first of two side by side reflecting pools. Depending on the amount of rain Jackson Hole receives in the spring, these pools might be around as late as early July ... it all depends on the rain.

This will be in my upcoming second ebook Grand Teton National Park - A Photographer's Site Shooting Guide 2 This ebook will have 60+ photos not in my first ebook which I have expanded from 80 photographic sites to 115 great photo sites around Jackson Hole.
