In particular, the Coleoidea subclass (cuttlefish, squid, and octopuses) is thought to be the most intelligent invertebrates and an important example of advanced cognitive evolution in animals, though nautilus intelligence is also a subject of growing interest among zoologists. 🐬

Crows are one of the smartest of the birds.
For example, crows understand analogies, can exercise self-control, can fashion tools and like to play—all signs of what we call “intelligence.”
An article that appeared in the science journal PLOS ONE in July 2014 puts a comparison estimate on that brainpower: the authors concluded that crows are just as good at reasoning as a human seven-year-old child.

Also known as yellow-bellied macaw, blue macaw (Amazon), canindé, yellow macaw, ara-arauna. It is one of the smartest parrots.
Its scientific name means: do (Tupi) ara = Tupi indigenous name to designate several parrot species; and of (Tupi) ara = parrot; and una = black, dark. ⇒ Dark parrot.
It measures about 80 cm in length. Large and long-tailed. Unmistakable and showy ultramarine blue coloration on the back, and golden yellow on the underside from the face, belly to the tail, throat with black line and bare area on the head with line of black feathers. Juveniles have grayish-brown wings and tail and brown eyes.
Migrates at certain times of the year in search of food. It travels great distances during the day, between resting and feeding places. It feeds basically on seeds, fruits and nuts.
They nest between December and May in holes in the trunk of large dead palm trees, between 10 and 25 meters high, laying 2 eggs, which are incubated for 24-26 days.
It is locally common in the canopy of forests, floodplains with palm trees, interior and edges of tall forests, at about 500 m altitude. It lives in pairs or in groups of 3 individuals, a combination also maintained when forming larger flocks of up to 30 individuals. It is currently one of the most notable large parrots in the urban environment, a phenomenon known as “urban macaws”.
Geographic distribution
From the Amazon to Paraná, and in the past it reached Santa Catarina. Also found in eastern Panama and northern Colombia, Venezuela, Guianas, Peru, Bolivia, as far north as Argentina and Paraguay and western Ecuador.

From the archives. Our cat reclining on a lazy summer afternoon. I was struck by all the color in his eyes but it turns out the monochrome version is equally interesting in all the furry detail, especially on the bridge of his nose. His name was Angel; the smartest cat to ever join our household.
The color version. His eyes had a unique coloration.

These are among my favourite birds, inquisitive, interesting and so expressive, they are such a joy to photograph and watch in the north! Only the smartest birds can survive in such conditions, and the Canada Jay is certainly among the most intelligent.
Ravens are among the smartest of all birds. They can be taught to mimic speech and they use tools in their hunting. It is absolutely amazing to watch their behavior. I have read that they will cast out a member of their own group should they fail at their duties as a lookout (example--while dumpster diving, the sentry better have his or her act together and not let anything endanger the trash foragers).

He was proudly displaying and singing to his chosen female and she was also suitably impressed by him.
People in Iraq report that the WEBU is one of the smartest birds... this according to esteemed Wikipedia. On this day, a group of six seemed to be taunting a flock of 14 Black Kites that were clearly looking for breakfast. Personally, I found this less than super intelligent behavior...
This could be one of the smartest Trabis you will ever see. Strolling through Wittenburg in Germany last year, I spotted this one parked by the roadside. The Trabant is an automobile which was produced from 1957 to 1990 by former East German car manufacturer VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau. Although it is often seen as symbolic of the defunct East Germany and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc in general, it was a sought-after car in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Trabant had a hard plastic body mounted on a one-piece steel chassis, front-wheel drive, a transverse engine, and independent suspension – unusual features at that time.

The Raven:
Ravens are among the smartest of all birds, gaining a reputation for solving ever more complicated problems invented by ever more creative scientists.
The Raven is an acrobatic flier, often doing rolls and somersaults in the air. Young birds are fond of playing games with sticks, repeatedly dropping them, then diving to catch them in midair.
People around the world sense a certain kind of personality in ravens. Edgar Allan Poe clearly found them a little creepy. The captive ravens at the Tower of London are beloved and perhaps a little feared: legend has it that if they ever leave the tower, the British Empire will crumble.
Common Ravens can mimic the calls of other bird species. When raised in captivity, they can even imitate human words; one Common Raven raised from birth was taught to mimic the word “nevermore.”
The oldest known wild Common Raven was at least 22 years, 7 months old. It was banded and found again in Nova Scotia.

Aiko and me off hiking, seeing that fog covered the fjord I figured that it was smartest to walk the opposite way.
So we did.
And this is what we found.
I was speechless to put it mildly.
And I'm sorry if someone thinks I'm bragging 😂
Well I am a bit, I must admit 😄

THE BIRDS are very active right now and this means that Linus doesn't get much sleep during the day as they keep him busy. I'm happy to report that he hasn't caught any birds in weeks, though, mainly because sitting on the porch like a neon sign isn't exactly the smartest tactic. Don't tell him !

What are you willing to do to get that one perfect shot? This one entailed stopping on a lift bridge on the highway and hanging out the window. Now I am not saying that was the smartest move, but in my defense, there was no traffic and I was only stopped for a second, hehe.
Those of you who know me will know I love Ravens. I dont get to see them very often, at least not up close like this. :)
One of the smartest of all birds, these Corvids are found everywhere on the earth except Antarctica.
Clever, adaptable, social, ubiquitous, and don't forget raucous!
I found this one perched on some lakeshore driftwood and it allowed me to fire off a few shots before flying off to join its buddies :)

World Oceans Day is celebrated around the world on 8 June, created to raise awareness of the importance of the oceans in our ecosystem.
There is so much to discover in the waves! Seas and oceans are home to fascinating and hidden creatures… and some are among the smartest on the planet.
The oceans are a common good and we must protect them before it's too late.
Only a healthy ocean can ensure a healthy planet for the well-being and prosperity of all!
The Adult male Red heads are perhaps the easiest to recognize in the open water of lakes and coast lines. There cinnamon colored heads and subtle body markings make them easily identifiable. A bird found mainly on the plains and the western USA can some times be found on the North East. They take Brood parasitism to another level, when they will lay there eggs in not just other ducks nest but even other Red Heads. Reports exist of them laying eggs in even Northern Harrier nest, probably not the smartest idea.

"The smartest men, they built a rocket
Aimed it at a target far, far, far away
But by the time they knew they lost it
It was a long way, was a long way, was a long way
We’re a long way, we’re a long way, we’re a long way off
The erudite composed a thesis
Everything we see is all, all, all there is
But as an apophatic mystic
We’re a long way, we’re a long way, we’re a long way
We’re a long way, we’re a long way, we’re a long way off
When the waves of time
Wash the shores stark clean
Of the memories, the last of me
With my castles gone to the constant sea
Will you stay with me
Stay with me"

This waterfall is fairly difficult to shoot. There is just not much color there to work with. If you look through other images of the falls most simply use the sky to add some color. When I visited the site, I wanted to do something different, use something besides the sky to add color. Well, there was some great yelow grass, and some green near the falls, but it was hard to get to. The lookout is high above and getting in close to the fals would have meant using a zoom, then loosing the setting. So in order to get the color, and the setting, I had to venture down the cliff edge. So I went down, into the cliff face, which was made of sand and loose rock. Sooooo not the smartest thing I have ever done. One step, slide 5 feet, next step, slide 4 feet, and so on. I finally reached the color and set up the tripod. I was quite excited to see what it looked like. So anyway, I do not advise this spot. Not sure its worth the effort or the danger. After all, when I finished shooting and turned around, I had to climb back up, one step up, three feet back, second step up, 5 feet back. Not a productive way to get up a cliff. Enjoy.
Not sure if I care for this contre-jour shot, but couldn't resist those crepuscular rays - and that tiny pinhole of sunlight through the clouds was an interesting effect.
This was taken in the company of the fine members of the STS. I don't think I have seen any similar shots from them, so perhaps I wasn't doing the smartest thing in the circumstances. But I have shot this location numerous times and wanted to try something different.

AN EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW FROM THE ANIMAL KINGDOM.
The wolf never eats corpses, neither of animals nor of people; He spends his entire life with one partner, he does not mate with his mother or his sister; It is a monogamous animal, it does not cheat.
If a partner dies, the wolf remains alone; He knows his little ones well: he is the only animal that helps his parents after a deep old age and brings them food.
When you kill a wolf, it looks into your eyes until its soul leaves it; It is 25% more intelligent than the smartest dog, and it is the only animal that does not obey training, they say. Wolves think, dream, make plans, communicate with each other intelligently, and are more like us than any other living being.
Best viewed by zooming in to see what these kids were fighting over. Even with all the available grass around them they decided this one blade was the best one in the field.
Watching these two juvenile Australian magpies proved to be very entertaining. As one of there parents left them alone for a few minutes to wander away and look for food, these two kids argued over a blade of grass.
Research has shown they are among the smartest of birds, including demonstrating a remarkable capacity to get tracking devices off fellow members of their species.
Hopefully these two grow up to do their family proud.

The square crop ice abstract series continues with a shot of river ice - yes, I'm out of the ditch for now. Unlike the previous two, this is not a greyscale conversion; I did not alter the colours beyond basic adjustments of contrast, vibrance, etc.
This one is pure pattern. No one feature stands out. Small panes of thin, flat ice, two or three inches high, were standing on edge, close together in a jumble that extended along an ice platform for 20 ft or more. The more I look, the more these look to me like office cubicles after an earthquake or some other disaster, and so I considered titling it "Office Space", but then realized I don't want to impose my own fantasies on viewers. However these formations came about, they are a maze that even the smartest lab rat would have trouble navigating. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Of all animals, ravens behave in ways most similar to humans.
Yes, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY!
They are capable of language. They have reasoning and problem-solving skills.
They are greedy. They hoard food to provide for their future. I forget all of the clever things they do.
Their giant wingspread attracted my attention when they landed to raid my squirrels pile of non-salted peanuts. I grabbed my camera and noticed this one above in the trees watching the one on the ground trying to stuff 3 peanuts into his beak! They returned the next day, and the one next too!
