I realize I usually post photos in the morning but I woke up sick this morning and didn't really get fully out of bed until about 4pm so better late than never. I don't always enjoy doing crowd shots but sometimes the moment is right.

I've gotten a bit away from my concert photos lately, not because I am not going to concerts, but because there are so many areas of photography that I am interested in exploring between macro abstract, macro nature, landscapes, the. magic in every day neighborhoods, street photography, travel photography, and more. Anyway, what this means is that I miss a lot of birthdays and there's kind of an ebb and flow to my stream that occurs. In other words, you don't like what I post one week, you might enjoy the next week more.
Either way, concert photography was my first passion and I just can't imagine functioning in my life without music. I can't even sleep without music (if the power goes off and the music turns off, I'm awake in a flash!) So...it's a pretty important evergreen companion to my daily existence.
I hope I caught something special in this moment with Rachel Goswell that is removed from just performance but captures the genuineness of being alive, playing your songs, and having so many people loving them. It was her birthday on Friday.

I've never been an audience member to call out song requests but the song I still often hear lyrics to in my head is one of Slowdive's very first hits "Dagger" from their album Souvlaki even after all of these years of many great albums. I just all of a sudden will sense Halstead singing, "The world is full of noise. I hear it all the time."

I was so so so very happy to be able to see and photograph one of my favorite bands, Slowdive, with another one of my favorite bands, Low, last Thursday night at The Vic Theater in Chicago.

Austin, Texas
After much disorganization and a cancelled music festival (Which I flew out to on my birthday...making this literally the worst birthday ever), Austin Psych/Levitation festival organizers botched up the selling of tickets for some of the bands in one off venues as they were already trapped in Austin and had no festival to play. Of course, instead of selling them to people who were standing in line for hours or already had wrist bracelets for the fest, they sold them online and scalpers scooped them up in seconds. So, these are the fans that loved Slowdive so much they climbed on top of a huge truck to watch and listen from a distance.

This little girl's sense of anticipation and her facial expression was just fascinating to me. Even though Levitation was cancelled, I was really grateful to see and photograph one of my favorite bands again.

I was VERY LUCKY to be able to spend a little bit of time with Neil Halstead and Simon Scott during Pitchfork Music Festival and ask them some questions about their upcoming tour, new material in the future, and so far how crowds have received hearing the songs they've loved for so long live again (or for the first time).
