This is an old photo taken with a point & shoot camera. I was fortunate that the perfect amount of light penetrated through the top of the slot canyon. The light is even better for photographs at mid-day.
Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon or The Crack; and Antelope Canyon or The Corkscrew.
Mistaya Canyon in Banff National Park is a scenic gem on the Icefields Parkway. Sculpted by the rushing water of the Mistaya River, which originates from Peyto Lake to the southeast, this deep slot canyon features curvy limestone walls and eroded pothole depressions. One of my many stops along the Icefields Parkway that connects Banff to Jasper NP in Alberta, Canada. Many signs about telling people that there are sheer drop-offs and certain death is imminent. I took quite a few from different angles. It's hard to explain how curvy the gorge is below these falls as it deepens substantially below the frame here. I shot this early in the morning with just a few lingering about. I did manage to capture one gentleman getting out fairly far onto the rocks. Stay Tuned.
An image shot last year that I thought never came out "right". This new take is closer to my first impression.

If you are looking to visit a slot canyon, this site horseshoebendtours.com/ offers both private and limited number tours. 14 is the max. It was an awesome experience. Something I have wanted to do for a long time. Not sure I did the canyon justice but I certainly enjoyed it. One item off the bucket list :-)
The "Zebra Slot Canyon" is one of the worthwhile destinations in the "Hole in the Rock Road" area near Escalante, part of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, best in later morning with indirect light.
At the beginning of November 2016 I was again in this canyon, but it was full of brackish, cold water, so I could not reach the photographically interesting area as in the picture.

The Taylor River squeezes through some narrow spots, including Tod's Slot. The rocks in the slot back up some of the water, making it tricky or fun (depending on skill level) for kayakers to get through this gracefully.
The headwaters of the Taylor River are in the Elk Mountains and Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness. The river pauses at Taylor Reservoir, but continues to Almont, where it meets the East River to form the Gunnison River.

Macro Mondays 'holes' theme.
I took several different photos for this week's 'holes' theme, then dithered about which one to upload, finally deciding on this one of a dark grey plastic slotted serving spoon. It's hangs on a rack and is rarely used as you can tell by the dreaded macro dust!
The image measures 1.25" in width
While on a trip to the Southwest I discovered a hidden slot canyon. As I walked through the winding cavern, light trickled down from above casting shadows and highlights on the walls and floor.
This is not Antelope Canyon in Page Arizona., this is just outside of Blanding Utah in the desert.
Thanks for stopping by
Slot canyon hiking can be one of the most interesting and challenging activities in red rock canyon country. Over eons of storms, slot canyons were formed by racing water and the tumble of boulders and other debris leaving interesting patterns and colors in the sandstone.
Navigating the large boulders, steep talus slopes, and deep pools requires special gear and skills to maneuver.
The most important skill is possession of a conservative mindset when it comes to when to hike down a slot canyon, and more importantly, when not to hike. Flashfloods can blossom into catastrophic events even when there is little or no precipitation in the immediate vicinity. Far away mountains and plateaus are carved with numerous rivulets, washes, and creeks that funnel rain water into many slot canyons.
My words here come from an experience of having to climb up out of an approaching flashflood and watching many flashfloods from a distance over the years. Stay safe!
A view of Lower Antelope Slot canyon near Page, Arizona. This is a 5 exposure hdr followed by Lucisart processing to bring out the texture. I also pushed the color saturation but did not add color or colorize the image in any way.
