Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) this morning. One can detect some rather interesting details. A clear center line in the dust tail. At least 3 disconnection events. A very extended, faint parallel shaped part of the gas tail and the bright strait ion tail.

Technique: Sony A7s (CentalDS modded and cooled) ISO 3200, sLog2 mode, 8 x 300 sec, Borg ED-Apo F3.9/480mm, comet guided with ED-Apo 70/400mm and ASI 740.

Tenerife, 1120 m alt, 2015-12-11, 5:50 h - 6:30 h UT

Field of view: 3.8° x 2°

Panorama of the Eibsee near the Zugspitze. It was foggy which had a kind of a calming mood.

Comet C/2013 US (Catalina) one day apparent motion and tail morphing. Look at the the differences in the ion tail but even more in the "third" tail of volatile dust. You can also detect much tiny galaxies. Captured in Tenerife, 1180 m altitude. (1 right) 2015-12-22 (2 left) 2015-12-23. Each: 21 x 240sec with Sony A7s (1: JTW modded 2: CentralDS modded and cooled) ISO3200 sLog2 mode, Canon 200mm/F1.8, EQ8 mount

Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina), captured this morning in 1800m altitude in a very transparent sky in Tenerife. Some very unusual things struck me: A type of ridge in the dust tail (two arrows) and a curved unusually extending structure (one arrow), which is certainly not a processing artifact.

Technique: Sony A7s (JTW modded), ISO 3200, sLog2 mode, L-filter, 64x10sec and 28x20sec, RASA 11"/F2.2, iOptron iEQ45, 2015-12-02, 5:30h - 6:30 h UT

Just picked up my Sony a6300 Body, a couple of days earlier than expected. So I took it out for a quick and dirty spin through the inner disctrict of Vienna... Filmed entirely in UHD with the Sony 50 mm 1.8 OSS prime wide open, AF in continous mode and Picture Profile Slog2 (PP7) with Color Scheme set to Pro. Most shots are deliberately overexposed by 2 stops. Manual exposure mode (shutter 1/50). Auto-ISO ranges between 800 (native) and 25600, mostly 6400.

"I will walk ..." clips shot completely handheld in Slog2 picture profile with a Zeiss prime lens 55mm at Lucknow in India. Color graded in Magic Bullet Suite 12 and intentionally stabilizer didn’t apply to shaky clips in post production.

I was on my way to photo shoot and just dropped in a centre of differently-abled for twenty minutes and shot few clips and images of an inspiring differently abled girl. I hope that she sees herself open to endless possibilities in the future.

Differently abled children have many battles to fight, including the lack of proper infrastructure, to get an education. No school means more social alienation and limited employment opportunities. An estimated 90% of children with disabilities in the developing world do not go to school. In India, 38% of children aged between 6 and 13 with disabilities were found to be out of school, according to a January 2014 UNICEF report.

These shots were taken from video stills captured in 2016 on the first Sony A7s camera at a time when I was learning how log images worked and how best to color grade them in Resolve. Captured in Slog2 / S-Gamut.

The original resolution wasn't very high for a still, so I upscaled it using Gigapixel AI, which works pretty darn well!

I don't remember exactly how I colored these, but I'm pretty sure the foundation was a filmic color emulation based on a Kodak print stock.

The lighting setup was a 300W halogen stage par bounced off of a sheet of unbleached muslin and dimmed for a more golden color. The rim light from the right was a desk lamp pointed at Ayesha :)

Lens wise I want to say it might have been an older adapted Contax Zeiss 50mm?

I've been experimenting with video much more recently. I tried some clips with SLOG2, but I didn't get the exposure right. This was shot with Movie picture profile and it was easier to see correct exposure in camera. I see some color cast on the sides, but I don't know how to correct that.

The first clip was exposed normally using a gray card, and is strange because Sony's standard profile enhanced the colors of the flower like they would look in direct sunlight – which it wasn't. The second clip was shot in S-Log2 (overexposed by two stops as recommended), then graded with the 1-D input LUT “Slog2 to Rec709.” The colors of the second clip look much closer to the flower viewed by the naked eye in shade – which it was.

The third clip was with no PP, no LUT. The fourth clip was in S-Log2 with the 1-D LUT, as well as an ND32 filter, which resulted in more natural looking greens. A polarizer was needed on both of these latter clips. I also tested for possible IR pollution (with and without a black card as well as the black sleeve of my sweatshirt), which showed that the 5-stop ND didn't need an IR Cut filter with this camera.

The fifth clip was with the S-Log2 to Rec709 LUT with Saturation at +75.

Sony a7s, 60p, 1/125sec, Davinci Resolve 16. First and second clips: Zenit 58mm f2, third, fourth and fifth clips: Nikkor AIS 20mm f3.5, fifth clip: Zenit 58mm f2.

These clips were shot with the SLOG2 picture profile and graded in Davinci Resolve. I still barely know my way around Resolve, but I think this looks ok. I recorded in normal speed and sped up playback in processing.

Love working with this 85mm lens, awesome! S-log2 gave me cinematic feel in this shot, almost like old film Hasselblad photos!

Still from a 4K video shot on the Sony A7s in Slog2/ Sgamut and color graded in Davinci Resolve.

Went for a "David Fincher" type of aesthetic with the range compression and overall low exposure look of the hallway. It appeared about three times as bright in reality. But where's the fun in bright images? :)

This was shot in 4K and sped up in playback. I used the Movie picture profile (PP1), but it lacks the dynamic range found in stills. I tried this with SLOG2 also, but it was much noisier. I may not have exposed it correctly in SLOG2, but I checked for zebras before setting the exposure. The best dynamic range would come from shooting stills over an interval, but that is much more time consuming.

Filmed in slow motion with the Sony RX10iii. The camera was hand held. I am able to get more magnification ( by increasing the zoom ) but it becomes more difficult to maintain focus.

Sound track - blackbird singing.

In the wine clips the A7S + lens required f5.6 for proper exposure, while the E2C + lens required T2.2. The explanation is that the E2C's “ISO 800” Log had to be overexposed two stops = ISO 200, while the A7S's “ISO 3200” Log had to be overexposed by two stops = ISO 800.

E2C: 2.3K, ProRes HQ, ZLog2

Like to shoot sometime low key with this method - shooting in overcast day with S-Log2 to achieve delivers smoother gradations in shadows and mid-tones.

This was shot with SLOG2 picture profile. My prior clip was shot with Movie picture profile. Seeing this side by side with the prior clip shows me how much contrast and saturation needs to be added to the flat picture profile. I need to go further with the contrast and saturation than is shown here.

A look at downtown Indianapolis at dusk. Through some quirk I shot this still with the camera's manual setting using the slog2 video picture profile (I've not been able to do that, before). I removed much of the resulting noise in Davinci Resolve.

A Heron at Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Filmed using the Sony RX10iii camera.

Because there was full sun light on the Heron, I filmed with s-log2 picture profile to reduce the likelihood of over exposing the whites.

Stills from the holiday movie I made.

Shot using A7s, with Nikon 24mm AFS F/1.4, Noct-nikkor, 16mm fisheye Nikkor, and 100mm AIS E type Nikkor(with 2x extender), all using novoflex adapter.

A7s held up very well in the extreme lighting situations.

This was shot using PP1 and PP4, no Slog2 was used.,,.

Spent my Sunday afternoon making the 40 mile bike trek to/from Niagara Falls with some close friends.

Sony a7S using slog2. I have a ton to learn about slog2. I am not that good at color grading, so I am going to need to lot of practice. I will say that it is amazing for high contrast scenes like this one where it is heavily back-lit. If anyone want to play with the footage, here is the link on Dropbox, db.tt/JEgA5YOM If you get it to look good please upload a screen grab and post it in the comments below! You can post the video online too, just link back to my site for attribution.
