Our almost-four-year-old walked pretty much the entire way up, but he needed a well earned rest in the kid carrier on dad's back for the return journey of 6 klms.

Taken from the very top of Mt. Ohlssen Bagge in the Flinders Ranges. A hard slog was had to get up to the top of this mountain, and an even harder slog it was coming down in the dark, with torch batteries dying. I think it was worth the effort though. My 100mm f/2.8L macro produces pure magic.

the sloggers and everything else @ "Plants N' Things" are going out of business. this is one of the last "old skool orange county" haunts left.

now it's all turning into generic strip malls, bad service, and samey samey variety. very sad to see the places with character fall by the wayside, all in the name of progress.

A fine game of cricket today. Craig came to the wicket needing 75 to win from just 8 overs, and through some characteristic big hitting, got Henfield to a position where a win was still on in the final over.

Here's a powerful slog sweep over deep mid-wicket (cow corner) for six ...

We had a week walking in the Lake District in August. We haven’t spent a week there in the school summer holidays before but it was a case of needs must regarding available holidays. We stayed B&B in Ambleside as we couldn’t get self-catering at short notice. It was cheaper and breakfast is included, the downside is that we couldn’t get out as soon as we would have liked. Saturday – the day we drove up –was forecast to be good but was going to followed by a couple of rainy days so we drove straight to Dunmail Raise, arriving around 11.30. I told Jayne we were nipping up Seat Sandal but once up there it would have been silly not to go up Dollywagon and Nethermost Pikes, and then of course Helvellyn was only a stride away. We didn’t linger long in the crowds on Helvellyn, we had a knee jarring rapid descent to Steel End. We managed to get to Brysons tearooms in Keswick for afternoon apple pie- you’ve got to keep it civilised!

The weather alternated between very wet and very nice, it was like winter on three days so we stayed low and just did half day eight milers – in waterproofs. We got soaked through. On the other days we walked in shorts and tee shirts and went high. The weather was variable depending where in the Lakes you were which made choosing a walk difficult. We went to Crummock Water and parked near Rannerdale Knotts with the intention of doing a walk we’ve done several times before. Straight up the nose of Rannerdale Knotts, with a view that gets better all the time, along the top to the foot of the slog up Whiteless Pike and Wandope. The weather was good for walking, although we had very light rain initially and it was cool for August. On to Grasmoor and then Coledale Hause, over Sand Hill and Hopegill Head. The ridge walk along Whiteside has to be one of the nicest ways to head off the fells. Ten and a half miles and 4000 feet of ascent, it was a decent day out.

The following day was beautiful so we got out as early as possible and headed up Langdale to Old Dungeon Ghyll. The car park was filling with groups getting ready for a fine day on the fells after so much bad weather. We headed up The Band, picking the climbers traverse under the cliffs of Bow Fell up as I wanted to get to the top via the Great Slab. This is a great way to the top of Bow Fell, far more interesting than the main drag. The itinerary after this was, Esk Pike, Great End – at the end of the Sca Fell Massif, it was tempting to leg it out to Sca Fell Pike but it looked like a football match it was that crowded. Back to Esk Hause up on to Allen Crags, back to Esk Hause again, Angle Tarn and our final top was Rossett Pike with its stunning views over Langdale. Down Rossett Gill to Mickleden. Just over 12 miles and 4250 feet of ascent, another cracking day.

Thursday was our last forecast dry day and the day of the Rydal show. The weather was fantastic but it was going to be bedlam on the roads. We walked out of Ambleside to Rydal and cracked of around the Fairfield Horseshoe. It was that calm that people were sunbathing on the tops by midday. Calmness was one welcome feature of the week but when the rain came it didn’t shift so quick. The following day we did a circuit of Buttermere in the pouring rain, it was just a case of walking the cooked breakfast off really.

After a grinding slog through the forest, we finally found good fishing. Next time we’ll know to stick to the main trail!

This small stream flows into Rawson Lake. I hopped across rocks to get to its banks, trying very hard to avoid trampling the vegetation. Even in summer it was a bit chilly — as you can see we’re level with snow, still unmelted in the shadow of the mountain.

The slog up Simon Fell was not such a bad experience this year. Plenty of similar training before hand ensured that the extreme calf stretching severity dished out by this part of the course was not so debilitating later in the race. It's a part of the course that is really worth a quick glance back once you reach the flatter part. It's a breathtaking view on a clear day and gives you a real sense of just how much height you have gained.

youtu.be/aYwwo-Hci5k

I mean, what's the point ?

Overall the 2010 edition of the Marmotte Cyclosportive was not a brutal as the 2009 one. However the climb up Alpe d'Huez was absurdly hot when I reached it. I managed to take few shots whilst struggling up the lower slopes. After that ,it was a matter of survival.

A bit of a slog from the last panorama, here you can really see the glacier and two lateral moraines. What isn’t immediately obvious is that the gravel plain is also the glacier — under the gravel is more ice, slowly creeping downhill.

The couple on the trail were a friendly pair of folks from America. We talked a bit about China, where I had gone and they hadn't, and she asked me what the Chinese believed in. The only way to be happy is to have faith, you see, and the Chinese seem happy so they must have faith. I think I said something like "in their country" while my brain was quietly stripping its gears.

Susie at the top of the dune on the Scorpion Horse "Trail".

After a long slog through sleet, snow and high winds Laurie and I reached Crater Lake and attempted to take some shots, with mixed results - with strong winds and light snow making it too hard to get a clean shot we retreated back down the trail to Crater Falls, where it was at least out of the wind, we still had to shelter or cameras/lenses from falling snow clumps donated by the tree canopy (some times Laurie). As you can see there was some snow around the creek (had about 15cm of snow over night, crazy weather for Summer) it was melting quickly - more photos of our trip to follow, hope you enjoy them.

I Tuve by började skiftena på 1830-talet. Vid hans död 1938 köpte Göteborgs stad in egendomen.

-------------------------------------

Ancient remains density is high in the area and a number of burial sites have been registered in altitude terrain around the farm. There are two registered archaeological sites north of the area and Holmvägen. The west is a burial ground. Holm in Tuve parish mentioned in the 1500s as a village. There were three substantial farmhouses. At the beginning of the 1600s were the three farms together for the formation of the manor Holm stated that St Holm. Hisingen was then divided between Sweden and Norway and Tuve was Swedish. So it was up to the 1658. Identification of major Holm came to a misunderstanding after a clerk typed manor Holm St. Holm. It was interpreted then as Stora Holm. 1690 was Stora Holm wage homestead at Gothenburg commandant. After councilor Carl Ducher swapped with Stora Holm 1728 grew several new crofts up on the grounds. Hagen, Boenkullen and Grimman were some of them. In Tuve village began parcels in the 1830s. On Stora Holm was one less happy about the changes. In the 1860s, paid for the then owner Carl Burghardt trenching and construction of Holm dam of the former mill's water supply. Croft Bönekullen belonged also to Stora Holm. There lived a number of people who did day's work at the manor. In the 1800s, developed agriculture and milk production was prominent. The farm work farm laborer who lived on the farm and earth crofters who performed numer on the farm. In the 1800s there were about nine cottages at Stora Holm, most were related to the upland pastures of the property south and west. A couple of these cottages remain today, such as Sven's cottage, Carl crofts and Berndt´s croft. Berndt´s cottage (now called Almedalen) is outside the planning area but are included in Gothenburg conservation programs Culture Historically valuable buildings. On the estate north of Holmvägen low Farmhouse and forge and coach. There was also a residential building (called Valen) with three apartments and associated outbuildings extend, for workers at the manor. Holmvägen also bounded on the north side of a long stone wall. This wall is well preserved and is more of nature than retaining wall stone wall that frames the Farmhouse and gardens. Stora Holm's last private owner was the senator Herman Andersson. Upon his death in 1938 bought the city of Gothenburg in the property. It tore the barn and warehouse, but let the rest stand. The bell to inform the servants and maids of meal break was taken down.
