People have always had interesting relationships with owls. They have been feared. Hated. Loved. Worshiped. These nocturnal creatures inspire wide-ranging emotions, and the Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) is no different. This is evidenced by the names it has carried through the years: demon owls, whickering owls, death owls, spirit owls... Ah, folklore. But deep down, these small, handsome birds aren't all that different than us. They tend to be monogamous, appreciate peaceful life in the suburbs, and regurgitate pellets full of undigested mouse bone, fur, and gristle. Hmmm, okay...so we don't quite share that last little bit in common.

After posting yesterday's image, and before going to bed, I was able to capture this special shot, under the porch light. Fresh herbs are such an important part of our home cooking, with parsley surviving the winter! Doubt the sage and rosemary will be around after the dropping temperatures!
But we have dried a lot of the rosemary for the winter months.
i have been trying to keep a log of dreams and sleepytime words and thoughts if you will.
the title was in my head first thing at 5am. i have woken up thinking worse things, that is for sure ;)

This is how some photographers often describe good bokeh, so that's how I got the idea for this shot!
I was having tea last night while watching "Borat" (tea for make benefit glorious sleepytime!) and instead of drinking it I snapped away in the kitchen. I was too tired to get my tripod so this was all handheld--the creamer in my left hand and my (heavy) camera in my right. A killer for my already suffering wrists! If you look closely, you can see the shape of a sugar bowl in the bokeh! =)
The kitten was so comfortable that he didn't budge when I got close with the camera. He found this spot all by himself.

The engine and propeller, in the garden of The Pilot Dungeness is one of four Wright/Cyclone engines and propeller from a WW11, B17 Flying Fortress bomber (the same aircraft as The Memphis Belle). The artefact was accidentally snagged off Dungeness on the 18th of September 2017, by Joe Thomas and Tom Redshaw (local fishermen). The engine is almost certainly from a well documented B17 Flying Fortress that ditched off Dungeness in 1944. The Sleepytime Girl was on a daytime bombing raid, on an aircraft factory over Oberpfaffenhofen in Germany. The aircraft suffered heavy flak damage over Germany and all four engines stalled. The crew dived the B17 to 5,000 feet and managed to restart the damaged engines. The crew then had a vote and opted to strike back towards the safety of Britain, rather than trying to make it to Switzerland, which was closer.
At 5,000 feet the B17 was a sitting duck and was repeatedly attacked over France, where two German ME-109’s further damaged the aircraft, knocking out three of the four engines. Amazingly, the remaining crew managed to limp the aircraft back over The Channel on a single engine, where they ditched it off Dungeness. Only four of the original crew of ten were left alive and were rescued by an Air Sea Rescue Walrus (an amphibious biplane). The Co-Pilot William Nesen, received a posthumous Purple Heart. It’s difficult to imagine how these incredibly brave men in their teens and early 20’s, could submit themselves to a virtual death sentence on a daily basis. Please take a few moments to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices that were made for us, in order to free occupied and oppressed peoples and to ensure our own freedom and way of life.
