Sculpt update on various projects...
- 1:18 scale Newborn from Alien: Resurrection
- 1:18 scale Egg Layer Xenomorph from Aliens: Defiance
- 1:18 scale "The Beast" from ALIEN (79)
and a couple more images from the 1:18 scale Sleep Chamber (NOSTROMO) project.
For the Newborn and the Egg Layer Xenomorph, it's all about hands. I've created the frames for the hands I will be sculpting this week. For the Egg Layer Xeno, I want to sculpt a "neutral" hand which is nothing more than an enlarged version of the original ALIEN 79 hand so that will be fun.
For the ALIEN 79 "Beast"...I am happy with what I have done with the figure but I see where improvements can be made. The head sculpt has never been 100% for me...and I think with a little tweaking I can get it there. I'm also thickening the lower abdomen sculpt as its proportion to the upper rib cage is a tad overblown. I'll post a separate update to explain all that later.
Finally, I wanted to shoot a couple more images of Parker from the Sleep Chamber build just to get a couple more shots of that hand before I sculpt over it with another one. LOL!..and I shot another image of Ripley because it was just there. LOL! This was the shot Ridley wanted but the production company thought nudity (although logical in this circumstance) would limit the number of people that would see the film so he chose the alternative (the ridiculous bands across the chest) that didn't see the light of day anyway! LOL!
OK! See? I'm still kickin' out updates! LOL! I hope you all are safe and doing as well as you can with the current state of things. Hope my little updates can break up some of the monotony out there.

I've been trying to get Ash to bed but he's all wired.....(rolls eyes), bad joke..very bad. Anyway, build progress on Ash- Sleep Chamber variant - ALIEN 79, 1:18 scale.
I sculpted an articulated version of the Facehugger Kane figure over a year ago before deciding it would become a static piece. I then made a mold of that body knowing that I could use it for various projects, mainly the sleep chamber versions of the male characters. I've already created a variant for Kane. Next one up is Ash.
Made a cast of the body and broke the piece up at their articulation points. I've wired the pieces together to help form an idea how the figure will fit into the chamber bed, which requires some adjustments as well. The next step will be to bring the pieces together as a seamless figure with no articulation points present. Looks a bit out of proportion now but that will all change. The chamber's bedding will also be sculpted over to fit the figure and hold in place.
The next figure to get the sleep treatment will be Lambert (moving counter clockwise) - still deciding if the females should be topless or use the small band that went across their chest (kinda silly in the reference images if you ask me). Aliens Sulaco Sleep Chamber - scratch build - 1:18 scale work in progress. Made using sheet styrene, I will approach this piece similar to what I did with the Nostromo Sleep Chamber (also a work in progress). The canopy will be sculpted and cast in parts for vacuum forming. I will sculpt the bedding using Aves FIXIT (waiting on my new order). Then mold and cast the body of the chamber once all the details have been added. Build update on Nostromo's Sleep Chamber - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale.
Completed the sleeping Ash figure (static pose) and have put him to bed. Worked on framing the vac formed canopies using Aves FIXIT sculpt which worked surprisingly easy...I thought I was going to have all sorts of tolerance issues, adhesion problems etc...not so. They are turning out great so far.
Thought it would be cool to assemble the build I have completed to this point. As you can see all the pod are still separate from the center island...I will mend all the pieces together seamlessly once the figures are complete, canopies are formed and somehow figure out a way to hinge the canopies so they can be positioned opened and closed.
Next up, I need to put Lambert and Dallas to bed. Sleep tight! More to come!

Next up for the sleeping crew are Lambert and Dallas. Both are static sculpts, non-articulated. I haven't added the monitoring pads yet and there are a couple minor details that need to be added but all in all they are complete.
Sculpted the bedding for each figurine so they fit securely into place.
Next up is Ripley and Jonesy - Even though it's not officially seen in the film, I believe the cat was included in Ripley's sleep chamber as it was in the Narcissus at the end of the film.

Anyone notice the dead giveaway Ash was a robot during the opening sleep chamber scene?...He was perfectly prone, figures straight and rigid. Anyway, working this figure the same as Kane. Build progress on Ash - Sleep Chamber. Alien 79 - 1:18 scale. Sculpting a static figure to go along with Nostromo's Sleep Chamber diorama. Bringing parts together using Aves FIXIT and fitting the figure within the chamber by sculpting the bedding around it. The bodies proportions will be worked on once all the parts have come together. The sleeping giant - Engineer in Sleep Chamber - Prometheus 1:18 scale. - So I took the cast of the Engineer I created earlier last week, and shaped it using a hot gun to give the body the appearance it was at rest. The head sculpt of the masked giant is complete and has been cast and attached to the body. Next step are the tubes leading from the chamber to the Engineer as well as the tubes leading from the exterior rear of the chamber. The tubes for the Engineer will be borrowed while the exterior tubes will be sculpted and cast in rubber. #Prometheus #sleepchamber #engineer

How about it! A sculpt of Ripley all covered up! LOL! Got a lot of grief after my last update if you can believe it. Must be doing something right then. LOL! This is a separate sculpt by the way...another update of "topless" Ripley is coming soon.
Seriously now, this sculpt is of Ripley featuring the bedgown she wore at the end of the film where she tucks herself in for the unexpectedly extended sleep.
Made some changes to the hair, sculpted the gown and sculpted the hands in the correct position which will help me build up the arms accurately to complete the piece.
Next up is finishing a sleeping Jonesy (cat) and fitting her into the Narcissus sleep chamber.

Started to sculpt the centerpiece to the Nostromo sleep chamber, bringing all seven separate chambers together. ALIEN 1979 - 1:18 scale. I considered creating the center station entirely out of sheet styrene but decided a combination of clay, cast and styrene will work best. First step will be to sculpt the body of the centerpiece...minimal detail at best. Second will be to mold and cast the finished sculpt, cast and refine shape. Next I'll add detail with sheet styrene and other greeblie work needed and finally mold and cast the finished piece, bring the pods back together and mend gaps using epoxy making the connections seamless. #alien #sleepchamber #nostromo #sith_fire30
Finished the second Engineer sculpt last night! Prometheus - 1:18 scale. Also working on completing the alternate head sculpts including the sleep mask posted yesterday. I am also working on the Engineer helmet that contains the decapitated head of an engineer inside. This all leads up to completion of the sleep chambers for the Orrery room project I am working on. #Prometheus #engineers #sleepchamber

This is a rough Monster Clay sculpt that will be better refined with additional details added after a mold bath and cast is created. First this piece will go in the refrigerator of several hours so that the pods can be easily removed from the sculpt. From there a mold will be made and the cast from that mold will be the piece I will refine and detail. At this point I will work on hinges for the pod canopies to attached to. Canopies will be opened by hand. I had this dream of being able to push on the top center and all the canopies would open all at once....I'm sure it could be done but I don't have the tooling and time to create such a gizmo....perhaps an upgrade later? Sculpt update on "Sleeping" Ripley - Narcissus Shuttle - ALIEN 79, 1:18 scale.
Recreating the final scene in ALIEN where Ripley begins her ill fated hypersleep aboard the Narcissus shuttle.
The figure casting has accrued some sculpting revisions - minor but needed. You may see some mild shading around the face, epoxy that was added especially for the cheekbones that had to be raised.
The figure fits into a bedding that was sculpted with AVES FIXIT and shaped before curing to fit the figure in place.
The canopy shots have been adjusted to soften the vacuumed plastic imperfections since it distorts the white resin copy of the sculpt beneath. So it's kinda like an overlay till the final figure is painted.
So this piece will go into the Narcissus Shuttle diorama I am currently building. I am working on a sleeping Jones the Cat that will be included with Ripley within the pod.
Thanks for your patience with the updates. I'm enjoying my new job and I feel I will be able to commit more time in the evenings to increase my sculpt work on the several projects you all have been following here.

Sulaco Sleep Chamber build progress - 1:18 scale - ALIENS. Hoping from the Nostromo to the Sulaco, I've been working on the canopy to the sleep chamber. First I sculpted the shape of the canopy directly to a cast of the bed using Monster Clay. Once I had the measurements right, I shaved away approx. .125 - .25 of the surface from the clay form. Next I sculpted a "shell" directly to the monster clay form using Aves FIXIT sculpt, creating the canopy while adding plot lines where the windows will be knocked out. Once the canopy had cured for 24 hours, I loosened the canopy free from the bed and began to remove the Monster Clay from it's core. I've also refined the surface of the canopy and will begin adding surface details where needed. Once complete I will make a mold and cast the finished canopy then insert clear acrylic sheet to the inside to create the windows. #aliens #sulaco #sleepchamber #breakfastinbed #colonialmarines #sith_fire30

Sculpt progress on The Queen - ALIENS 86 - 1:18 scale.
Plastic casting test on the head/jaw build. Rough test, nothing cleaned up or painted.
I used Smooth-On Smooth Cast 320. I do plan in casting the teeth in a transparent plastic eventually.
I've been molding and casting several pieces to my build over the past week or so and have taken some shots of the successes. Surprisingly everything turned out great for the exception of the Alien Warrior mold which I had to redo. More on that one later.
Here is a plastic casing of the four components to create the Alien Queen head and jaw. This is one of several variants that will be made to "plug and play" into the Queen's carapace.
I put one together using some of the initial pulls to get an idea how it will all work. Happy with the results. Next step will be moving onto the neck and variant head sculpts.

All the limbs were pinned into position, glued in spots, then sculpted over using FIXIT. Then refined...which I still have a little more to do. Sculpt progress for the Nostromo crew - Sleep Chamber - Alien 79 - 1:18 scale.
"Sleeping" Ripley is next. Taking the castings I made of my "Space Undies" Ripley (Narcissus) shown last week, a couple of head casts from my Warrant Officer Ripley figure, a Dremel, some sculpt tools, sandpaper and a heat gun, I've created two frames of Ripley sleeping in both the Nostromo and Narcissus sleep chambers.
Next step will be sculpting the upper bodies, filling the seams, adding the arms and fitting the figures properly into their sleep pods. Takes a ton of dremeling, sculpting, sanding and filling...but it's all well worth it.
Nostromo version will feature Ripley topless as it was originally intended. The Narcissus version will feature her in a robe.
Both will have a small sculpt of Jonesy curled up and sleeping

Taking the castings I made of my "Space Undies" Ripley (Narcissus) shown last week, a couple of head casts from my Warrant Officer Ripley figure, a Dremel, some sculpt tools, sandpaper and a heat gun, I've created two frames of Ripley sleeping in both the Nostromo and Narcissus sleep chambers.
Next step will be sculpting the upper bodies, filling the seams, adding the arms and fitting the figures properly into their sleep pods. Takes a ton of dremeling, sculpting, sanding and filling...but it's all well worth it.
Nostromo version will feature Ripley topless as it was originally intended. The Narcissus version will feature her in a robe.
Both will have a small sculpt of Jonesy curled up and sleeping

Build progress on Ash - Sleep Chamber. Alien 79 - 1:18 scale. Sculpting a static figure to go along with Nostromo's Sleep Chamber diorama. Bringing parts together using Aves FIXIT and fitting the figure within the chamber by sculpting the bedding around it. The bodies proportions will be worked on once all the parts have come together. I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to work on this piece last week but from what progress I've made, I'm hoping that I can complete both sleeping versions of Ripley - one for the Nostromo Sleep Chamber and the other for the Narcissus by the end of the weekend.
For this update, I've attached the upper arms/shoulders to the torso, as well as sculpted the boxers each crew member wears while in their pod. Next step will be the lower arms, sculpting the hands, then fitting the figure properly into the pod. No progress yet on the Narcissus version but that will change after tonight's session.
May sound a little silly seeing that many consider these current projects as "customs" ...but I've treated these static sculpt projects as if they were classical studies. I'm usually sculpting monsters or alien bodies so sculpting the human form is a real treat. Especially the female form which I consider a challenge.
...and Jonesy the cat. I completed the sculpt of him in a sitting pose a couple years back. Next will be a standing pose featuring a ball jointed neck and a sleeping version of Jonesy all curled up that will fit in both sleep chambers along with Ripley! I plan to do one additional variant of Jonesy hissing!!

Sulaco Sleep Chamber build progress - 1:18 scale - ALIENS. Hoping from the Nostromo to the Sulaco, I've been working on the canopy to the sleep chamber. First I sculpted the shape of the canopy directly to a cast of the bed using Monster Clay. Once I had the measurements right, I shaved away approx. .125 - .25 of the surface from the clay form. Next I sculpted a "shell" directly to the monster clay form using Aves FIXIT sculpt, creating the canopy while adding plot lines where the windows will be knocked out. Once the canopy had cured for 24 hours, I loosened the canopy free from the bed and began to remove the Monster Clay from it's core. I've also refined the surface of the canopy and will begin adding surface details where needed. Once complete I will make a mold and cast the finished canopy then insert clear acrylic sheet to the inside to create the windows. #aliens #sulaco #sleepchamber #breakfastinbed #colonialmarines #sith_fire30

Sculpt update on the Nostromo Sleep Chamber - ALIEN 1:18 scale.
Working on sculpting both Parker and Brett in their sleeping positions. I'm starting first with the head sculpts and upper torsos.
Parker will of course be larger so expect to see a major modification to the existing torso you see here. Head sculpts will appear to have the characters eyes closed and new hair will be sculpted on Brett since this is a casting from my original that sports the ball cap.
Arms and legs will be fully sculpted, then each sculpt will be custom fit to their sleep chamber.
Looking forward to having the entire crew asleep in their chanbers!!

Sculpt progress on the sleeping versions of Brett and Parker - static pieces, no articulation.
As you can see in the progress images, much of the initial cast pieces were used as framework only. Parker's body, which is basically a full sculpt, needed to be proportionately larger than the rest of the crew. Unlike the rest of the crew sculpts, I'm not going to allow much separation of the arms from the body for these two. Will make it easier to replicate later.
I have some adjustments to Parker's head sculpt and Bretts neck and shoulders...adjustments are made as it progresses. Soon I will have the entire sleeping crew complete.

Finally today I added bedding to the Sulaco Sleep Chamber - ALIENS 1:18 scale. Used Aves FIXIT sculpt so the piece is very heavy now LOL! Next will be adding the control panel work to the front of the chamber, a gear cover and additional tech on the sides and below. How about it! A sculpt of Ripley all covered up! LOL! Got a lot of grief after my last update if you can believe it. Must be doing something right then. LOL! This is a separate sculpt by the way...another update of "topless" Ripley is coming soon.
Seriously now, this sculpt is of Ripley featuring the bedgown she wore at the end of the film where she tucks herself in for the unexpectedly extended sleep.
Made some changes to the hair, sculpted the gown and sculpted the hands in the correct position which will help me build up the arms accurately to complete the piece.
Next up is finishing a sleeping Jonesy (cat) and fitting her into the Narcissus sleep chamber.

Sculpt progress on Kane - Sleep Chamber - ALIEN 1:18 scale. After the passing of John Hurt I felt it wouldn't be appropriate to drop updates of his likeness pertaining to Kane sleeping or deceased...perhaps nobody would have cared but that's just me. Anyway, first off is an update of Kane in the sleep camber. My plan with the sleep chamber diorama is to have a static sculpt of each character quietly sleeping in their respective chamber. Kane is the first of the series. I have a male body that I have cast to create the static pieces but the parts need to be wired together in different poses. Doesn't make sense if they are all sleeping in the same position right? Looking a little rough right now but that will change with the next update.
