A few bare branches penetrated the vegetation. It was my luck to see a sleek-looking bird, a Cedar Waxwing, on one of the exposed branches.
There were eight to ten waxwings hopping from branch to branch, bush to bush, snatching old berries, and making high-pitched whistling sounds. This one had a full black mask, but no red tips on its wings, indicating it was a first-year bird.

I am not a sailor, but I love the lines of this old boat at Pillar Point Harbor, just north of Half Moon Bay, California.

There are many species of swallow but the one I am familiar with is simply known by most in the UK as a swallow. The name Barn Swallow does get used and to be fair the house I grew up in had outbuildings which could easily be described as barns and as long as there was some form of access swallows would nest in the rafters every year.
This swallow was photographed hunting over water near Trakai Castle in Lithuania.
With the wind blowing, this all puffed-out GRPR seems content to hide herself in the interior of this low bush. I spotted her feeding there and she seemed to me like a bee jumping all around the bush and then down onto the ground and back up, eating small pieces of buds and other delectables off this shrub and insects here and there as well. While watching her and waiting for her to "pop out," I noticed also she was puffed up when in the bush but on the ground she tucked her feathers into a much sleeker look... can't say why :-)
Again, with all the wind, there was so much motion in the greenery, I bumped up the SS to try to compensate and that seems to have helped...
I'm not sure what was going on but all the birds on this Valentine's Day that I saw seemed jumpy, a little unsettled, and I kind of felt it also... could be soooo many things (slight earth tremor, rapid change in air pressure, the wind, bad moon rising - I don't know)... but the day ended for me, slipping off a wet rock and falling from the top of a low wall onto of course - a bed of pointy stones below... no damage to any of the equipment but slightly bruised ribs and a left calf muscle strain... life happens... :-) but I plan to be back out this week...

Mod theme at Uber? Yes please. Lots of great stuff if you want a nice, retro look.
Fantastic backdrop from Anxiety, as always, countless outfits to choose from that I can't even pick one, and some poofy, sleek hair that'll have you strapping on Go-go boots and listening to the Who in minutes. Go nuts like me.
Some softer makeup choices coming from Zibska over at SaNaRae, opening today, as well, along with the fabulous head decoration I showed off last picture! Catch a ride over on my blog!
Also, shoutouts to other Alex (original and probably better Alex, honestly) for helping me out with my picture while horking up a lung to make it look like I'm not such a rogue drag queen.

I will be visiting my homeland (São Miguel Island, Azores) mid summer and needed a wide angle lens, considered the Olympus PRO 12-40mm 2.8 but there was a sudden drop on the price for the Fuji and I couldn't resist :-)) I opted for the Fuji and their kit lens (which is supposed to be really good ) and now gives me a wider FoV for my Legacy lenses. I hope I don't regret my decision !

Plump, smooth-plumaged bird with a sleek crest and white and yellow markings on wings. Mostly clean gray with brighter rusty wash on the face. Look for rich rufous undertail. Breeds in open coniferous forests at high latitudes across the Northern Hemisphere. Winter range depends on fruit crops; sometimes descends much further south in large numbers. Often found in flocks feasting on fruiting trees like crabapple and mountain ash. Listen for their ringing trills, often given while flying overhead. Compare with Cedar Waxwing in North America; Bohemian is larger and grayer, with rufous undertail and different wing pattern.
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. February 2013.
If there are a bunch of stilts around, I'm taking lots of pictures of stilts. Cool looking birds.
...From McNary NWR on a day, back in May, when there were tons of stilts around.
NB: Not captive. Seen on garden patio tiles.
Curious looking characters the weevils are. These beetles with their elongated snouts and myriad forms are truly unique.
This is Eurhynchus quadrituberculatus within family Brentidae, with non-elbowed antennae. Xylophagous, with the larvae being fungivorous.
One sleek weevil.
Length around 20 mm.

This was the wonderful hood / bonnet ornament on a beautiful old Jaguar XK150. It was one of two glorious old cars that pulled up in the car park of Tower Hill reserve near Warrnambool in Victoria. The other was an old Aston Martin DB 2/4.
Although this is a full colour shot, it came out as black and white once I slid the background out of the shot with a big contrast boost.
Happy Slider Sunday!
