In the southern part of the province, we called it "sledding" while the north uses "sliding". This is my oldest daughter, aged 4 or 5, in the late 1990s, pulling her sled and ready to go back up the hill. Merry Christmas, everyone!
Made the boys a "ramp" for their sledding in our yard today. They got way higher when they did in on their own but they had more fun going down the hill and up the ramp to catch air together.
This sport takes back ancestral traditions which allowed the Inuits to survive in the big Arctic deserts and represent the link with the nature.
Fast, exciting, well trained sled dog teams are the result of careful behind the scenes planning and hard work. Successful mushers are knowledgeable in such diverse areas as kennel management, canine behavior, nutrition, veterinary care, psychology, physical conditioning, housing and transportation. Wise mushers soon learn that success or failure in any of these areas affects performance dramatically. Considering this fact it is obvious that the welfare of the dogs is of paramount importance.
Team and driver develop a close, trusting relationship because of the amount of time they spend together. To betray that trust by not meeting all of the dog’s needs runs counter to the goal of having a happy, healthy, highly motivated team.
What you see at a race is the result of long hours of work and planning to ensure that the team is prepared to test its abilities against the trail and the competition.
Who's having more fun - the boy or the dog? Despite the look on his face, the kid on the sled was having a great time also.
Rosalie and Peony with their boyfriends, Jack and Jesse, and the girls' young cousin, have some winter fun!
Yeah, here's me... hard at work at home on the projects that I am supposed to be getting done during my time off from work. I woke up this morning and decided that I wanted to go sledding. I figured I would go over to the park and spend a little bit of time...turned out the park was closed for hunting! That was the first time I had ever seen that, so we had to drive around trying to find another place to go. Afterall I had promised Meeko that we'd go sledding and I didn't want to disappoint him (and you can see from this photo that he was really thrilled about this. I don't even want to tell you how long it took for me to get him ON the coaster with me! And this was his one and only run down the hill! I guess sled dogs are supposed to PULL the sled and not ride on it!) At least I had fun... but now I want to find a bigger hill! Yeah... I can tell that a great deal of work is going to be accomplished this week!

We took the kids sledding near June Lake California today and all had a great time. I took a few shots of others coming down the hill and loved the action and pure joy in this shot. I have to give the Dad credit, because I wouldn't have recommended he go so fast with his tiny little girl sitting in front of him. However, even off the jumps he maintained control - - and she was obviously enjoying the ride.
Dave took this and I absolutely love it. The day after Christmas, sledding with the girls in Los Alamos. Pure. joy.
I saw Santa walking to the bus stop! When I asked about his sled, he said he was tired of cleaning up all that reindeer Sugar Honey Ice Tea!
