Ein Slawendorf bestand immer aus mehreren Hütten, in denen Bäcker, Töpfer, Weber und Zimmerleute zusammen lebten. Die meisten Slawendörfer waren rund oder im Halbkreis angelegt.

Frühmittelalterliche, fensterlose Pfostenhäuser waren mit Flechtwänden in Stab- oder Blockbauweise errichtet und das Dorf in der Regel von einem Palisaden-Zaun umgeben. Der einzige Zugang führte durch das Zugtor des Torhauses.
