Betel chewing is a wide-spread tradition across South-East Asia. There are three main ingredients - betel nut (from the areca tree), betel leaf (a pepper vine) and slaked lime. Many countries have developed their own traditions including highly decorative equipment and containers for the leaves, lime and nuts as well as other flavourings such as tobacco, cardamom and cinnamon. This container was probably used for lime and comes from Indonesia.

Dot King was whittled from the bone of Cain

with a little drop of poison in a red red blood

she needs a way to turn around the bend

she said I wanna walk away and start all over again

there are things I've done I can't erase

I wanna look in the mirror and see another face

I said never but I'm doin' it again

I wanna walk away and start over again

no more rain no more roses

on my way

slake my thirst in a cool cool pond..

Crystalline droplets of summer's morning dew,

Bring gentle moisture, the dry earth to renew.

Adding richness to nature's colorful array,

It deepens the values of hues on display.

Dampening the ground and all of its features,

It slakes the thirst of God's smallest creatures.

The dew bathed everything, wherever it fell,

Freshening the air with its clean, crisp smell.

But soon the sun's heat will burn it away,

And scorch the earth for another day.

Then comes the morn when the temperature drops,

The dew will return to freshen the crops.

But when winter's morning dew is upon the ground,

Its wispy white beauty leaves one spellbound.

Sprinkling its frosty white crystals everywhere,

It Gives the landscape a new beauty so fair.

Have a WONDERFUL day my friends!!!

New love, new love, where are you to lead me?

All along a narrow way that marks a crooked line.

How are you to slake me, and how are you to feed me?

With bitter yellow berries, and a sharp new wine.

Pont du Gard was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1985 on the criteria of "Human creative genius; testimony to cultural tradition; significance to human history”. The description on the list states: "The hydraulic engineers and ... architects who conceived this bridge created a technical as well as artistic masterpiece."

A little information

The Pont du Gard is a Roman monument built halfway through the 1st century AD. It is the principal construction in a 50 km long aqueduct that supplied the city of Nîmes, formerly known as Nemausus, with water. Built as a three-level aqueduct standing 50 m high, it allowed water to flow across the Gardon river.

Built on three levels, the Pont is 49 m high above the river at low water and 274 m long. Its width varies from 9 m at the bottom to 3 m at the top. The three levels of arches are recessed, with the main piers in line one above another. The span of the arches varies slightly, as each was constructed independently to provide flexibility to protect against subsidence. Each level has a differing number of arches.

The Pont du Gard was constructed largely without the use of mortar or clamps. It contains an estimated 50,400 tons of limestone some of the individual blocks weigh up to 6 tons. Most of the stone was extracted from the local quarry of Estel located approximately 700 metres downstream, on the banks of the Gardon River.[The coarse-grained soft reddish shelly limestone, known locally as "Pierre de Vers", lends itself very well to construction . Although the exterior of the Pont du Gard is rough and relatively unfinished, the builders took care to ensure that the interior of the water conduit was as smooth as possible so that the flow of water would not be obstructed. The walls of the conduit were constructed from dressed masonry and the floor from concrete. Both were covered with a stucco incorporating minute shards of pottery and tile. It was painted with olive oil and covered with maltha, a mixture of slaked lime, pork grease and the viscous juice of unripe figs. This produced a surface that was both smooth and durable.

Now mischief, murder, wrath of hell drawth nere

and dyre Phlegethon flood doth blood require

Achilles death shalbe reuenged here

With slaughter such as Stygian lakes desyre

Her daughters blood shall slake the sprites yre,

Whose sonne we slew. wherof doth yet remayne,

The wrath beneath, and hell shalbe theyr payne.

Here's a wonderful day moth, that I've not seen before in the wild. In these parts it's relatively rare, the Hyles gallii or Bedstraw Hawk Moth. It was fltting about rather haphazardly around one of my favorite locations in the Waterleidingduinen, a small fen where Roe Deer like to slake their thirst. And I take a rest in a soft, sandy dune after a hike.

Betel chewing creates massive health and social problems. Although it induces feelings of euphoria and well-being, it is highly addictive and the key ingredients are carcinogenic, linked to a prevalence of oral cancer and fibrosis and reproductive problems including low-birth weight.

Elsewhere

Let us away, my child,

Away to Elsewhere.

There days are ever mild

And fields are ever fair.

The moon that shines on whom

There wanders happy and free

Hath woven its light and gloom

Of immortality.

Seeing things there is young,

Told tales sweet as untold,

There real dream-songs are sung

By lips we may behold.

Time there's a moment's bliss,

Life a being-slaked thirst,

Love like that in a kiss

When that kiss is the first.

We need no boat, my child,

But our hopes while still fair,

No rowers but fancies wild.

Oh, let us seek Elsewhere!

Paan (Hindi: पान from Sanskrit parṇa, "leaf") is a preparation combining betel leaf with areca nut and sometimes also with tobacco. It is chewed for its stimulant and psychoactive effects. After chewing it is either spat out or swallowed. Paan has many variations. Slaked lime (chunnam) paste is commonly added to bind the leaves

It is a tradition in South India and more so in the region often referred as 'Old Mysore' that covers Mysuru, Bengaluru, Mandya, Hassan, Tumkur, Chikmagalur, Shimoga and nearby regions to give two Betel leaves, areca nut (pieces or whole) and Coconut to the guests (both male and female) at any auspicious occasion. Even on a regular day it is the tradition to give a married woman, who visits the house, two Betel leaves, areca nut and coconut or some fruits along with a string of threaded flowers.

Betel leaf used to make paan is produced in different parts of India. Some states that produce betel leaf for paan include West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh. In West Bengal two types of betel leaves are produced.

However : The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) accept the scientific evidence that chewing betel quids and areca nut is carcinogenic to humans

'No, we suffered no ill effects', writes Dutch-born Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin (1727-1817) in 1788, 'when I and two companions fell upon these fruits to slake our thirst after an exhausting hike in maritime Venezuela'. Jacquin between 1755 and 1759 explored and collected natural specimens on the behalf of Emperor Francis I and went on to become a renowned professor in Vienna, Austria.

In a way it was curious to see this pretty plant in the deep shade of the Tropical Glass House of the Hortus. It loves to grow in the direct, hot Tropical Sun and I almost missed it in the Glass House. The cherries it produces in more kindly light are bright red, very sour and they contain lots of Vitamin C. One of their names is 'acerola'.

I watched this pair of limpkins walk around the pond, stopping every few steps to wade in, return with a snail, and extract thee content under the watchfull eye of junior..repeat! the slake alone saw there lesson repeated some 50 times. Hard it is to be born,

Hard it is to live,

Harder still to hear of the way,

And hard to rise, follow, and awaken.

Yet the reaching is simple.

Do what is right. Be pure.

At the end of the way is freedom.

Till then, patience.

If you wound or grieve another,

You have not learned detachment.

Offend in neither word nor deed.

Eat with moderation.

Live in your heart.

Seek the highest consciousness.

Master yourself according to the dharma.

This is the simple teaching of the awakened.

The rain could turn to gold

And still your thirst would not be slaked.

Desire is unquenchable.

He who wishes to awaken

Consumes his desires joyfully.

Dakota, Missouri Valley & Western’s turn to the Canadian Pacific interchange point of Max, North Dakota, crosses Charlie’s Lake north of Garrison late in the afternoon of August 31, 2018. Powering the train the railroad calls the “wayfreight” is SD50F Nos. 5439 and 5408 bracketing SD40-3 No. 6911.

Nova Scotia has been under a fire burn ban and hasn’t received any rain in weeks which has made it extremely dry throughout the whole province leaving everyone’s lawns brown and burnt looking which is why I decided to do a monochrome shot of my moms property on the lake. The grass looks terrible but not in monochrome.

Alone one is never lonely: the spirit adventures, waking in a quiet garden, in a cool house, abiding single there;

The spirit adventures in sleep, the sweet thirst-slaking

when only the moon’s reflection touches the wild hair.

There is no place more intimate than the spirit alone:

It finds a lovely certainty in the evening and the morning.

It is only where two have come together bone against bone

that those alonenesses take place, when, without warning

the sky opens over their heads to an infinite hole in space;

It is only turning at night to a lover that one learns

He is set apart like a star forever and that sleeping face

(For whom the heart has cried, for whom the frail hand burns)

Is swung out in the night alone, so luminous and still,

The waking spirit attends, the loving spirit gazes

Without communion, without touch, and comes to know at last

out of a silence only and never when the body blazes.

That love is present, that always burns alone, however steadfast.

New to me on this trip to East Africa was the caracal, a nocturnal cat about the size of a bobcat but much thinner. This one spent a long time slaking its thirst at a watering hole and night wildlife blind in Kenya's Shompole Conservancy. From a February 2025 safari. ©2025 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com

In youth from rock to rock I went,

From hill to hill in discontent

Of pleasure high and turbulent,

Most pleased when most uneasy;

But now my own delights I make,

My thirst at every rill can slake,

And gladly Nature's love partake

Of Thee, sweet Daisy!

His awesomeness is almost blinding.

Be violets in their secret mews

The flowers the wanton Zephyrs choose;

Proud be the rose, with rains and dews

Her head impearling;

My thirst at every rill can slake,

And gladly Nature's love partake

Of Thee, sweet Daisy!

I suppose this scene could have been 'shot' just about everywhere on pretty - though a bit austere - Sado Island. Those rocks, the overhanging Japanese Pine Tree holding on for all its worth. And our well-travelled Black Carpenter Bee slaking its thirst from 'invasive' Loosestrife.

Along with all the x-ray film, I also shot a single dry plate. I'm still trying to figure out how they'll work for me, but until then, I really like what I'm getting here.

This house is slowly folding in on itself. I don't really capture that at this angle, but hey, one thing at a time, okay?

I shot this at .75iso (that's point seven-five), and it's still a bit under exposed. Or maybe under-developed. I devved this during the same session as the x-ray, and like I said then, I really don't understand what to look for to tell me it's time for the stop bath.

I probably pulled it out of the dev tray too early.

But there will be much more to come.

So here I am for the first time in India. Flew in the other day to Chennai (Madras) from Kuala Lumpur. As I went out in the morning for a coffee this colorful scene met my eye. What masquerades my early prelude will bring... I'll keep you posted.

This pair of picnic tables beneath the shade of a tree afford vistors a nice view of Lake Argyle looking down the lake towards the dam. I would imagine, however, that people need to be careful not to trip on the exposed roots of the tree.
