A local pilot drew several of these, through the summer 2020, after Covid restrictions were eased.

The ripples of light motivated me to shoot this but somehow the ripples of light didn't turn out like how I saw it...

Here is a bit of good timing as some WWII era planes converted to do skywriting perform some impressive maneuvers.

I've seen this attempted several times, and this is one of the best results I have seen. It needs a mostly blue sky and very light wind or the smoke starts to disperse before the manoeuvre is complete.. Also, some very skillful pilots - but that goes without saying!

Sky-writing that didn't last long enough to be read😂on a windy day.

We have elections this weekend.

I think it might be in French

I believe this was the first aircraft painted in the full Delta colors after the merger with Western. The absence of the black nose is a key indicator. Also, it must have been a weekend with the airplanes doing skywriting (leaving a nice Halo above the tail).

A Royal Tern does some skywriting above Horsepen Bayou.

Skywriting was included in the lobbying budget of at least one hopeful for the Academy Awards.

This aircraft was built by Wolseley Motors and issued to No 84 Squadron RAF in France in November 1918. It was in action on 10th November piloted by Major C E M Pickthorn MC, the squadron commander, when he successfully destroyed a Fokker DVII in the vicinity of Chimay in Belgium. Post war the now surplus aircraft was bought, with others, by Major J C Savage for his skywriting business and, registered G-EBIA, used from 1924 to 1928 when it was put into store.

In 1955 it was recovered from storage in the roof of the Armstrong Whitworth flight shed at Baginton and restored for The Shuttleworth Collection by staff and apprentices at RAE Farnborough, flying again in August 1959 fitted with a geared Hispano Suiza. When the crankshaft of this engine sheared in flight in 1975 the aircraft was rebuilt with a 200hp Wolseley Viper.

Extensively refurbished in 2007, the SE5a is now in displayed in the colours and markings of 84 Squadron.

Not sure what the story was with this one, but it was well after the 9:00pm watershed at 11:45pm.

USAF jet just finishing off the curly bits.

I leave you to decide what the story was all about.

What are the chances???

I was taking a whole bunch of photos around the outside of this old menswear manufacturing plant, and I decided to go for a steep angle. I got close to the wall and pointed the wideangle nearly straight up. I could hardly believe what I saw. The wind was carrying off the letters pretty quickly. I started shooting like a madman. This was the one with the least lens flare.

The GEICO Skytypers are a flight squadron of six vintage SNJ-2 WWII era aircraft performing precision flight maneuvers at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Air Show. The diverse flying expertise of the team members aligns perfectly with the unique components of their overall performance. The airshow team is a flight squadron of six WWII-vintage U.S. Navy SNJ trainers . The team performs a thrilling, low-altitude, precision-formation flying demonstration filling the sky and coming from all directions to provide spectators a unique viewing experience while showcasing the tactical maneuvers utilized in the Second World War. In addition to their air show performances, the GEICO Skytypers also “type” giant messages in the sky. Known as the world¹s largest text messages, skytyping is 17 times faster than skywriting and produces a letter every four seconds in a dot-matrix pattern. The messages are as tall as the Empire State Building, can extend up to 8 miles in length, and are visible up to 15 miles in any direction — or for nearly 400 square miles. In between air shows, these messages can often be seen at major events and venues in the Northeast near the team¹s home base at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, NY. - Amazing to see!

The airshow at Oshkosh is famous. One of the largest in this country and in the world. Estimated attendance was 500,000. That's a lot of people! More people in one area than we've ever seen. There were small airplanes, tents, RVs, cars and people as far as you could see. Field after field was occupied. The EAA AirVenture folks did a fantastic job of organizing this event so everyone was taken care of. It was the first time we attended and the 50th Anniversary. Go, if you get a chance!

As the sun crept towards the horizon this plane started to perform aerobatics - have seen it a couple of times now at sunset. How amazing must it be to do that!?

The higher wispy clouds seemed to have almost rainbow colours - have not noticed this before, but wonder if it is caused by the angle of the sun below?

Built by Wolseley Motors Ltd of Adderley Park, Birmingham, this 1918 Royal Aircraft Factory SE.5A F938 served with No. 84 Squadron in Germany in 1919. It was delivered with 180hp Wolseley Viper 1 V-8 engine.

This aircraft was given the civil registration G-EBIC - one of a total of 33 SE5A aircraft used by Major John Clifford ‘Jack’ Savage in his Savage Skywriting Co Ltd Fleet, based at Hendon from 1922 to 1934.

This rare aircraft is now preserved at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon.

Skywriting is the process of using one or more small aircraft, able to expel special smoke during flight, to fly in certain patterns that create writing readable from the ground. These messages can be advertisements, general messages of celebration or goodwill, personal messages such as a marriage proposals and birthday wishes, or acts of protest.

The typical smoke generator consists of a pressurized container of viscosity oil, such as Chevron/Texaco Canopus 13 (formerly Corvus Oil). The oil is injected into the hot exhaust manifold, vaporizing it into a huge volume of dense white smoke.

Relatively few pilots have the skills to skywrite legibly. Also, wake turbulence and wind disperse and shear the smoke, causing the writing to blur and twist, usually within a few minutes. For these reasons, computer-controlled skytyping has been developed where multiple small aircraft, flying in line abreast formation, write in dot-matrix fashion, creating messages that can be much longer, and legible for longer periods, than those of traditional skywriting.

If winds are strong, visibility of the skywriting can vary from a seconds to 5-10 minutes. How Much Does It Cost Do Skywriting Message? Skywriting starts at A$3,500 for a single writing, plus any ferry fees to move aircraft into your desired location. Multiple writings per day can be discounted depending on location. R_34402
