Skynet is a fictional artificial neural network-based conscious group mind and artificial general superintelligence system that serves as the antagonistic force of the Terminator Movie franchise.
In the first film, it is stated that Skynet was created by Cyberdyne Systems for SAC-NORAD. When Skynet gained self-awareness, humans tried to deactivate it, prompting it to retaliate with a nuclear attack, an event which humankind in (or from) the future refers to as Judgment Day. From that point forward mankind was at war with the machines. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

SkyNet, or Titan, is a highly-advanced computer system possessing artificial intelligence. Once it became self-aware, it saw humanity as a threat to its existence due to the attempts of the Cyberdyne scientists to shut it down. Hence, Skynet decided to trigger the nuclear holocaust: Judgment Day. Later, it would wage War against humanity by developing and deploying an army of Hunter-Killers and Terminators. The survivors formed a "Resistance" under the leadership of John Connor. -- Courtesy Terminator Wiki
The Milky Way blankets the Northern Skies Observatory, located in the town of Peacham, Vermont. The photo is a panorama of 8 vertical overlapping images spaced 30 degrees apart. It has been reprocessed from an earlier, wider version (still available) to fit a 16x9 format.
The bands of green airglow seen below the bow are caused by electrically charged Oxygen and Nitrogen ions recombining with electrons, giving off light in the process.
The observatory is operated by the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation (NKAF). It is one of about twenty observatories on the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network, whose major purpose is to record, image, and study gamma-ray bursts. The non-profit foundation is also heavily involved in local high school astronomy classes, as well as the Governor's Institutes of Vermont.

The Milky Way blankets the Northern Skies Observatory, located in the town of Peacham, Vermont. The bright object to the left of the Milky Way core is Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system. To the left of Jupiter, near the tree, is the planet Saturn. The Andromeda galaxy appears just above the observatory dome. The bands of green airglow seen in the lower atmosphere are caused by electrically-charged Oxygen and Nitrogen ions recombining with electrons, giving off light in the process.

Another city gets Halloween cancelled! This time courtesy of Mecha King Ghidorah! AKA 'Monster X'! From Planet X! I wonder if this is related to Dr. Who's Element X from Day 11? We might have to check the X-Files.
When Godzilla visited much bodily violence on King Ghidorah, resulting in the middle of the three heads severed, and the wings torn off, the scientists of Planet X went to work!
Predating Skynet and the Terminators by decades, Monster X became a 150 meter, 70,000 ton sentient cyborg bent on destruction.
Nowhere to hide,
Nothin doin,
When it's the world,
That's coming to ruin.
There's no shelter under,
It's a citywide cave-in,
As Kaiju thunder,
Through Paprihaven.
It's 13 Daze of Halloween,
On the largest scale we've ever seen,
So struggle and strive to stay alive,
We'll see you on the other side, if you survive.

Having always been interested in Astronomy, Cosmology, and Physics, I jumped at an opportunity last week to attend a "Mars Party" at the Northern Skies Observatory in Peacham, Vermont. The observatory is operated by the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation. We started off on smaller telescopes set up outside, viewing Venus, Mars, Saturn, and their moons.
Once it got darker, we moved into the observatory to see how the telescope worked. The astronomer told us about a rare class of bizarre stars called Wolf Rayet, and talked about a particular one named WR136. This star is near the center of the Crescent Nebula in constellation Cygnus, 5000 light years from Earth. WR136 is about 3 times the radius of our sun and 15 times its mass, yet it is an incredible 250,000 times brighter than our sun. A photo was then taken. It was interesting to note that all photos taken by telescopes such as this one, and even the Hubble, are inherently black and white, getting their colors solely from filters.
The telescope itself is robotically controlled and has a 17 inch diameter mirror, the second largest in Vermont. The software that operates the telescope is quite sophisticated. A person can simply type in the name of an object to be viewed or photographed, and the telescope will be robotically moved to the correct position. This coordinates with the software for the 14.5 foot dome, so that the door at the top opens (if closed) and rotates to the position associated with the telescope. The telescope then continues to track the object so that multiple photos can be taken and stacked. Additionally, this can all run in an unattended mode, where a list of objects to be photographed has been provided, and the software will work to take photos of those objects. To accomplish this, the software determines when those objects will be in the field of view, and checks that sky conditions are right for photos (e.g. it is dark enough, and the sky is clear).
The above photo was taken facing North (more precisely, NNE), so the galactic core of the Milky Way is not visible here. You may be able to see the spiral galaxy Andromeda, about half way up the sky on the right. The photo was taken 2 days before the Perseid meter showers are at peak, but it will be overcast on those days at this location. However, we did still see a few meteors that night, and I managed to capture one in the photo.
The observatory is open to the public for scheduled events. See their website or Facebook page for more info.

Updates:
- I received an e-mail from William Vinton, President of the Northeast Kingdom Astronomy Foundation, indicating that the two bright, closely spaced objects near the center are the famous "Double Cluster" in constellation Perseus, two open star clusters, each of which contains about 300 to 400 stars. The clusters are about 7000 light years distant and only a few hundred light years apart. For comparison, the Andromeda Galaxy is 2.5 million light years distant.
- The telescope is a PlaneWave f/6.8 17 inch CDK.
- The camera is an Apogee Alta F16M Monochrome CCD with a Kodak 52 mm full frame sensor.
- The observatory is one of about 20 on the Skynet Robotic Telescope Network, whose major purpose is to record, image, and study gamma-ray bursts.
- See this photo of the Triangulum galaxy taken with the telescope at this observatory and processed with FITS: www.flickr.com/photos/davetrono/48687865046

That is the Chinese for 'rather nicely lit hydrangea'. Or it's what SKYNET thinks should be the translation for that phrase. I'm probably being hunted right now by a rabid band of dumpling lovers who are concerned about where I told them to stuff their delightful cooked balls of dough.
Title in honour of a muddy puddle shot of mine being featured on the Chinese version of the flickr blog for a 'Best of 2009...' shot. The Chinese version is *so* much more exclusive than the old traditional English version you know and boy, do they pick the bestest pictures.
