This was taken by the new Skydio 2 drone near sunset. As the moon was already rising over the ocean.
Laura dragged me out of bed this morning for a quick paddle. Truth be told, by 6am our bedroom gets so bright, sleep isn’t possible. But I’ve been really enjoying following the natural rhythm and waking up with the sun.
I know I sound like a broken record but it’s so ridiculous that we just had to drive 1min down our road so we could go for a paddle down the French slough! We first tried to paddle off the Kootney River but a beaver put a stop to that nonsense and build a massive damn under the bridge, so we had to drive around and start on the other side.
Next time we gotta bring the kids along and make a picnic out of it. We didn’t get far because you know, parenting and all. Can’t just run away and paddle for hours.

Powder Day. I never thought there was a thing as too much pow! It’s been raining for the last 24hrs in the valley and the avalanche app was predicting anywhere upwards of 15 - 25cm of snow in the Mountains! First thing that blew my mind was the people I pulled up to at the parking lot. A couple that must have been at least in their mid 70s if not older getting their touring skis out of their camper and heading up Baldy Rocks. Not only that but I ran into them later on again on their 2nd or 3rd lap 🔥🔥🔥. So fucking inspiring!
Snow was absolutely ridiculous!! All the skinning tracks were completely buried and you could just see a faint outline of them in some areas!! I wanted to see how far I could get up because the Avalanche App did say we were at Considerable Avalanche Danger above the treeline. Sure enough I heard a loud crack and some popping and a nice crack appeared right below me. That was the spot where I stopped and headed downhill!!
Next time I gotta remember when we have this much snow I gotta pick steeper lines because at times it was all going or all together I just got stuck and had to swim out ( watch till the end ). Also took a wrong turn and somehow ended up on the wrong side of the mountain which was a mind blowing ride down but the trek back up took everything out of me.

I stand corrected, spring snowboarding does not suck! Its all about timing! You go out too early ( like I did last time ), everything is rock hard ice, you go too late ( towards the end of my ride today ) the snow gets heavy, wet and is trying to swallow you up. I think I managed to hit the sweet spot today and it was an epic morning!

This morning we headed out for a family road trip to Nelson. After weeks of searching for a window/door for our new chicken coop, Laura finally found an old antique door from a heritage home tear down in Nelson.
It was weird to just zip over to Nelson in 90min, it used to be a camping destination involving 5 hours of driving each way for us.
We always try to make sure that everyone gets something out of these outings so after picking up the door, we took the girls to an awesome toy store in Nelson and let them each pick out anything they wanted. Afterwards we fed everybody and took the little ferry over to Harrop to pick up some hard to find trees Laura had ordered from this small local farm. Our last stop was Nelson’s North Shore for a shuttle while the girls hung out with Eddie on the beach. Coincidently someone cleared a tree that fell across the FSR with the perfect dimensions for Laura’s log style beehive she wanted to setup on our property to attract a wild honeybee swarm.
Everyone’s buckets were filled and it was a successful day.

Took Eddie for his morning walk because we are in the middle of a heatwave. Brought the mace along as well. On my way down walked right into a black bear, not even 20 feet away from me and Eddie right on the trail. Quickly recalled Eddie as the bear lunged at a tree in fright but decided against climbing it up and started sizing us up. Started hollering and swinging my mace and smashing it into the ground and he ran off. Wo needs a bear bell when you have a bear mace.

Laura saw the footage I took of the waterhole yesterday and wanted us to take her there! Yesterday we arrived a bit too late and it was quite cold despite the heat. It’s such a deep canyon the sun only reaches this pool for a few hours around noon. So today we hit the pool at the perfect time, so the glacier water didn’t bother us with the 38°C.
Unfortunately with my luck as I was repelling down the canyon I broke a tree which in turn disturbed a wasp nest and they went at me. I didn’t even notice until I started hearing buzzing and then what felt like multiple stabs to my back. I dropped the beach bag and quickly ran down the ravine. The total count once we got to the bottom was: 4 stings on my back, 3 on the back of my knee and one or two on my left hand.
But the glacier water gave me instant relief and it was all good after that. There was another family there and we all had a blast cooling off in this pool just 10min away from home.

So my SIL is visiting us currently and she’s very pregnant. So family adventures were kind of out of the question. But we still wanted her to have the full BC experience. As luck has it we have this insane Mountain outside our living room window that you can drive to the very top. I don’t think the baby appreciated the bumpy road but watching a sunset at 2200m elevation made up for it.

We were all just sitting playing our new card game, five crowns, when suddenly we heard our 70 year old neighbours tearing up our street in their kubota! 2 seconds later our door bell rings and the two of them are standing at our door excitedly talking over each other that someone plowed the FSR shortcut in our neighbourhood and it’s like a massive tube slide and if they can borrow our sled and if we want to join them!!! Hell yeah!!! Totally reminded me of that one scene in step brothers!! 😂😂.

Went to explore out nearest nicer beach from our house. It was a 55min drive from our House and it was absolutely lovely! Not busy at all and that was on Canada Day Long Weekend!!
The conditions had to be just right. Unfortunately with the first freeze with had tons and tons of snow so ice skating was a no go. But then it warmed up and all the snow started melting. Including all the snow on duck lake. The last two nights it's been below 10 degrees and voila, you had a small window where you could ice skate on duck lake.
I guess it has gotten cold enough to start up with my cold water plunges. I was loosing light quick, so I first did the plunge and then ran by 5k, partially so I had light for the drone footage but also to warm up after the cold plunge.
Laura has been waiting for some trees and shrubs to be ready for pickup at a nursery in Salmo. So after what seemed like weeks of rain there was finally a sunny day and I decided to take my bike for a little rip out in Nelson after picking up Laura’s order. Decided to ride something new and went to check out Paper Bag. They weren’t kidding about it being more of a XC trail for the first 50% but when I came across that insane slab I posted yesterday it made it all worth all those punchy climbs. Overall a fun trail but definitely a XC trail for the first half, after that all downhill.

I wanted to see what this spring snowboarding was all about. We dipped down below zero last night and the avalanche forecast looked good as well. My eyes shot open at 5am and off I went. I was at the top of the mountain by 7:30am.
Good news was, the avalanche risk was nonexistent, bad news was the snow was shit. Icy, crusty and hard ( = painful ).
Despite that it was still an amazing outing. I participated in the 5am club, I got to see the sunrise from the top of a mountain at 2100m elevation and I broke a good sweat while at it.
On my way down I found remains of a very peculiar avalanche. It had the typical disturbed snow coming down but it finished with a massive snowball that I wouldn’t have wanted to be in its path 😬.

Helping our neighbour with her Hay order. The gentleman that usually delivers it just can't do it anymore with his bad shoulder. I was working in the area anyway and offered to pick up a load every time after work.
It was high time for a family adventure again. We’ve had these “warm” springs on our to do list since we moved here. The source of the hot spring is high above theses pools so the temperature is “only” 37 °C degrees. There used to be pools higher up the mountain but they have all been buried by rock slides. We had these beautiful pools in the middle of the wilderness all to ourself. That’s one way to spend your Monday.

Had to drop off my truck to finally fix an engine seal that has been giving me trouble whenever the truck is parked on an incline engine first. Invited Maya to join me for a bike ride back home.

Had a Polar Vortex pull through our town and we had a few days of double digit sub zero temperatures! Today we deemed it safe enough to finally go skating on our local little body of water. 5min from home.

That last stretch was like climbing a wall, my legs just refused to follow my command and every step was gruelling. On the way down my legs would just start shaking and twitching! On a good note, I didn’t hear a peep from my knee! Was it worth it? Yup!
