So I had to run out of my house in my cumfy "lounge around the house" shorts in order to catch the color that was in the sky tonight. I tried to include it with some kind of interesting foreground, but this was the best I could do on such short notice. You see, there are wild fires burning to the sounthwest of here and the smoke in the sky made for some absolutely killer color.

I adjusted the exposure and used grad filter tool to expose the sky. Vibrance and some luminosity adjustments but otherwise, the color is unaltered.

IS IT REAL? Or is it Photoshop? You decide. On the left is my original Camera Raw exposure taken with my Canon 5DM3, using a Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 • f/2.0 • 15 sec • ISO 6400 • 3800ºK White Balance. The image is brought into Photoshop and the sky contrast is increase via an “S” Curves adjustment. Less contrasty adjustments are also made to the water and shoreline. (Similar adjustments can also be made via Lightroom, albeit not as precise.) Many photographers will add a lot of saturation to their Milky Way sky. If you properly add contrast to the night sky, vibrance and saturation will increase NATURALLY, without artificial enhancements. See pages 125-133 in my "Milky Way NightScapes eBook for more details.

My Before & After comparisons often show a more dramatic change. However, this Camera Raw image already had good contrast to begin with. This is because the night was very clear, with low humidity, and the lake was in a Bortle Class 2 darkness zone —with a Class 1 zone directly behind it .

Portfolio & Services

Last month, Cripps and I were scouting for our upcoming workshop in Big Sur. Found this intimate view while heading back to the car from the (in)famous Pfieffer Beach with that portal with its beams of light. There was a crowd, of course, but it was to be expected. Still, I grabbed a couple lackluster shots from the line-up, but eventually I wandered down the coast. On the way back to the car, I had one of those moments. "Hey, wait, that looks interesting. Hold on Cripps, I want to take a few shots." Well, at 30 seconds per image, some refocusing and recomposing, throw in a 2nd stop before we got to the car, and I think my pit stop lasted 30 minutes. I like the afterglow of the ocean on a cloudless night. I am fortunate to live near the beach and see some amazing blues and purples at twilight, but there are no rocks by my house. Big Sur is good for that. It rocks, literally.

Serve your soul. Photograph what makes you happy whether that be icons or just a pile of rocks.

Post notes: As is often the case in a scene like this, no one white balance works for me. I double processed the RAW file for two different WB. Blended them in PS. Added a Basic mid-tones luminosity mask for contrast, heavy burning on the sky through a 50% gray layer and a Lights luminosity mask to darken and saturate the sky. Vibrance mask to add color. Saturation mask to rescue over done colors. Selective sharpening via Nik Sharpener Pro. Selective noise reduction with Noise Ninja.

Re-processed for Sliders Sunday - colour temperature and de-noising (sky), vibrance boost and dodging (ground), plus other things. A tip of the hat to Flickrite "LED Eddie" for the colour processing idea, which came from this excellent photo.

The Shot

I took this on the way from Lloyds on the Open House Weekend.

Much to the disgust of the owners the building became nicknamed the Gherkin after its shape.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance with layer masks to exclude the highlight areas in the sky

Vibrance layer increase 11 points

Saturation layer blues to reduce the intensity of the blue in the sky and reflection

Extra levels layer with layer mask to lighten the skyscraper top right

0EV image opened and copied as new layer and used with a mask to apply to areas of high noise in the shadowed areas at the base of the building.

I had tried taking some bracketed shots to do some HDR when I got home but I found that with a good single RAW file I could get pretty much the effect I wanted. Added some warmth to the rocks and tweaked some of the sky vibrance/saturation in Lightroom4 and that's about it.
