Call me crazy, but I'm still filled with awe at a simple bird flying freely in a beautiful wide-open sky...
Captured on a cold April day at the Sheboygan lakeshore.
Exposure set for the sky.

The setting sun gave beautiful reflections in the wet sand on the beach.

The Aurora season 2015-2016 has started. Beautiful and strong Aurora last night. Visible and very clear for a long time over my home community Sjoevegan. This is a promising start on the Aurora season.
Low light test shots.

Description :
Israel's Winter Wild Flowers
Anemone
A very common perennial with beautiful showy flowers in many colors. Anemones of all colors belong to the same botanical species and are inter fertile. The color of the flower is determined genetically by the respective parent plants. The common colors are red, white, pink, purple and blue. Altogether, there are 25 color types of anemones in Israel. Each flower blooms for a few weeks in mid winter. They open and close according to the sunshine and other weather conditions. In bright days the flowers track the sun's movement in the sky, capturing maximum radiation and warmth in the cold season.
Anemones have a rounded bulb close to the soil surface. The flowers and leaves emerge directly from this bulb. After the first rains the leaves break out. They have a long petiole and three dissected lobes. The flowers appear later in mid-winter, each carried on top of a leafless hairy stalk. The flower stalks are bent and break the ground with a special hook. Aboveground they straighten and bear a whorl of 3 bracts underneath the flower. As the flower ages, the distance to the bract increases, and in the red ones, a white ring develops at the base of the petals. The flowers have 5-6 colorful petals. The pistils and stamens in dark metallic blue, almost black, color are located at the center. The flowers attract beetles and bees that feed on the pollen released by the stamens while transferring pollen from one flower to another. The beetles probably take advantage of the large flowers also for meeting and copulating with the opposite sex. Each composite fruit contains hundreds of seeds that bear fluffy hairs which aid their dispersal by the wind.
Anemones are common in north and central regions of Israel, and even reach the edges of the desert in the south. The same species can be found in Greece Turkey and throughout the Middle East.
The ‘Church of the Blessed Peter at Duffus’ is first mentioned in a charter from 1190 The church was probably built by Freskin de Moray, who also constructed the mighty Duffus Castle nearby.
The church was badly damaged in the early 1300s during the Wars of Independence. It is situated in an situated in an idyllic location among mature trees. A rare medieval ‘mercat’ cross survives among the grave stones.
This fisheye view of the night sky captures the moon and five planets: Venus is the brilliant "star" in the West (right), near the Plejades cluster. Jupiter is low in the western sky, below (i.e., to the right) of Venus. The red planet Mars shines high the sky, in the constellation Leo, the Lion, east (left) of the Moon. Saturn is just rising over the southeastern horizont (lower left), it's yellowish color is contrasting with the bluish star Spica next to it. The fifth planet that is visible in this image is, of course, our Earth - at least, part of it... ;)
The sky was photographed in a single 30 second exposure with a circular fisheye lens (Canon EOS 550D, ISO 800, 4.5mm, f/4.0). The corners were filled with additional exposures, taken with the same lens and exposure settings.
See this photo for a closer view of Venus, Jupiter, the Pleiades, the Hyades, and Orion, taken on the same evening.

My best lunar and planetary images for the summer of 2018. Jupiter, Mars, Saturn and the Moon were all great, and it was good to have the gear assembled to get decent captures. Back to deep sky captures next week...
A lone figure walks along the seafront under a dark umbrella, facing the vast grey waves and the dim evening sky.
Captured with care to preserve the quiet, windswept mood of this coastal moment, the photo shows the beauty of solitude and the silent strength of nature.
A weathered, lifeless tree stands defiantly, its bare branches reaching toward the sky. Captured in May 2023, this image focuses on the interplay of form, light, and tone, transforming the stark simplicity into a striking composition.

A shockingly amazing sky captured! This was one bright lightning strike! Pic taken from around San Jose, CA from up at The Point Church. This was during a rare lightning outbreak! This was probably the most intense lightning storm I've ever seen for my area! (Thursday evening, August 6, 2015; 9:24 p.m.)
Weather scenario:
Nearly 1,000 lightning strikes have lightened up the Bay Area skies Thursday night of August 6, 2015! This rogue lightning storm happened during a dry storm that even prompted a Red Flag Warning for fire danger due to dry lightning strikes. What was the cause of such rare weather for us? All this lightning and scattered rain showers were caused by a low-pressure storm system interacting with subtropical moisture flowing in from the southwest, along with some moisture being drawn up from distant Hurricane Guillermo near the Hawaiian Islands! Despite the storms being 'dry', some areas did get some trace amounts of rain. The lightning started about 8 p.m. PDT Thursday along the Big Sur coast and moved north through Santa Cruz and into the South Bay before heading over to the East Bay nearing midnight. This was surely one of the best lightning/thunderstorms I've witnessed in my life!

Gardens during the Botanical Gardens Light Show – Winter 2024. The beautiful interplay of color, light, and architecture brings this iconic building to life against the moody Scottish night sky. Captured in Glasgow, Scotland, this image reflects the magic and festive spirit that fills the city each winter.
Stormy Atlantic Ocean waves crash powerfully against the rugged rocky shore in A Guarda, Galicia, Spain, in this dramatic scene from December 2023. Dark, heavy clouds loom overhead, casting a moody atmosphere over the churning sea. White sea foam surges over the rocks as wind and water collide in a dynamic display of nature’s raw power. The distant horizon blurs under the stormy sky, capturing the wild and untamed beauty of Spain’s northwestern coast.
