Skimboarding (or skimming) is a boardsport in which a skimboard (a smaller, sleeker version of a surfboard) is used to ride on an incoming wave. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach, with the skimboarder running and dropping their board onto the thin wash of previous waves. They use their momentum to 'skim' out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing. Another aspect of skimboarding is 'flatland' which involves performing tricks derived from skateboarding such as ollies and shuv-its on the wash of waves without catching shorebreaks.
This is me skimboarding on the Oregon coast about 1978. I did it so much one day that if felt like I had sanded off the skin on the bottom of my feet. This one I digitzed from a film photo taken by Diane.
Our first day in Boracay, me and my friend Dave decided to take a walk along the shore to take some pictures. Here is one of my favorite shots of two local kids chatting.
Captured during a very nice day at the beach escaping sweltering heat in the city. Two lads put on a show of skimboarding and I was lucky to capture this perfect moment at the end of a ride when wave, spray and surfer all hung suspended in defiance of gravity.
Crop of this shot and a very similar one can be found here. Looks great on white.
I'm very pleased with the reception this photo has received from all my kind viewers. This was one of the first real shooting challenges I have had with my new kit, a Canon 30D and an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lense. This combination worked very well for stopping action. If you look closely, you can see this lad is wearing Hanes boxers!
*An "Ollie" is a skateboard trick where the rider pops the front of the board in the air, first ascribed to Alan "Ollie" Gelfand back in 1977. You just had to know that, didn't you?
