It's just too darn hot and humid to go outside ... unless you absolutely have to. Temperatures of 38 deg c today, not including the humidity. Anyone up north want to trade a bit cooler weather for some of this hot and bothered-ness down here in the Southern Hemisphere, ha-ha.

Thanks for taking a look, it's much appreciated :))

Cordova Lake in the City of Kawartha Lakes is about two hours northeast of Toronto. Karen the kids, the grandkids and I rented a cottage at Cordova Lake for the first week of August. This is the second year we've been there.

It’s unsure just who discovered gold at Cordova Mine, but the property eventually came into the hands of H. Strickland. In 1897 it was acquired by The Cordova Exploration Company, in 1897, and was worked between 1898 and 1903. In 1911, it was purchased by Cordova Gold Mines Ltd. The mine site included housing as well. Its head office was in Toronto. The mine shut again in 1917 when it was again reopened under the ownership of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (COMINCO). It remained open only until 1940, and has been closed since

Cordova Lake is just 15 minutes north of Highway 7 so is very easily accessible. Explore the surrounding area and visit the delightful riverside town of Campbellford to the south, take a drive to Bon Echo Provincial Park or visit the ‘rocks that speak’ in Petroglyphs Provincial Park. And if you haven’t visited Kingston or Ottawa, it’s an easy day trip to both.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawartha_Lakes,_Ontario

The City of Kawartha Lakes (2006 population 74,561) is a city in east-central Ontario, Canada. Although designated as a "city", it is a largely rural area. The municipality is named for the Kawartha lakes ("Kawartha," shortened from Gaa-waategamaag, means "shining waters" in the Ojibwe language).

The main population centres are:

* Omemee

* Lindsay

* Fenelon Falls

* Woodville

* Bobcaygeon

The municipality was created in 2000 by the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario through the amalgamation of the constituent municipalities of the former County of Victoria, and officially came into effect on January 1, 2001.

In a close vote (51% for, 49% against), the citizens of Kawartha Lakes voted to de-amalgamate in a November 2003 local plebiscite, but the provincial and municipal governments have not taken any steps since the vote to initiate de-amalgamation.

I've included links to Cordova Lake cottage rentals, not because I want to rent you cottages, but because the ads feature great pictures of the lake and of cottage exteriors and interiors.

Black browed albatross scanning the ocean for baitfish

The 3 people in the background are subsistence fishermen who pump cracker shrimps for a living.

You can (as anglers with a permit), either pump your own shrimps on the sand banks once the tide has gone out, or purchase what they call a "parcel" from these guys.

Cracker shrimps are used as bait, btw, definitely not for human consumption :)

Surprisingly, there aren't hoards of seagulls pestering them. They arrive in their masses and snatch any left over cracker shrimps before they can bury themselves in the sand again.

I ventured out with hubby into the deep blue yesterday, much further than we expected, way beyond where the ships anchored waiting to come into port. Luckily the sea was reasonably calm considering the howling wind we've been experiencing. This was taken just after 4-30 am at a reef where the ski boats stop to catch live bait, from there everyone goes their separate way.

Yesterday would have been the perfect day to take the DSLR out, but I'm reluctant to chance it in case the sea is rough and the ski boat, us and the camera takes a good pounding.

Thanks so much for taking a look :))

As long as it's moving, I want to shoot it. We were back at Shenagno to photograph osprey but the chicks fledged and they were not letting us get close. As the sun was setting these skiers were getting in a final few runs. As they were skiing by I could see the sun backlighting the spray. Luckily they made a few more runs giving me another opportunity for one more shot. Thanks.

This pelican and a few others were feeding on the incoming tide on Durban Bay's centre bank. It was pretty shallow and hubby was kind enough to stop fishing and try and sneak a little closer to them in the boat so I could photograph them. The pelican obviously stopped feeding and unfortunately all I got was it standing there watching us with a wary eye. Oh well, there's always next time :))

Twin Cities River Rats Ski Show

This was taken at our Angling Club. Some Sunday afternoons, they have lunch and a live band plays into the evening. It's a very festive place to be, kids fishing off the embankment, adults enjoying the afternoon sunshine, music and a few sundowners. Always much talk about the "BIG one" that got away earlier in the day. You know, fishermen's tales :D

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look :)

Saw this during our trip to Bear Lake in Idaho. Boat rental places are scattered all around the lake. This one did not have a dock or launch so they used a couple of tractors to pull the boats on a trailer into deep water. The boat is jam packed with a large extended family with all the girls up in front. I did not stay long enough to find out how the boat returns to shore and whether all the passengers have to swim or wade in or if the tractor will go out and pick them up again.

The Riva Aquarama was a luxury wooden runabout built by Italian yachtbuilder Riva. Production of it and its derivatives (the Lungo, Super, and Special) ran from 1962 until 1996. The hull was based on the Riva Tritone, an earlier model speedboat by Riva, which in turn was inspired by the American mahogany Chris-Craft runabouts. The boat's speed, beauty, and craftsmanship earned it praise as the Ferrari of the boat world.[1] The company was founded by Pietro Riva in 1842, and run by Carlo Riva through its 1969 sale to the American Whittaker Corporation

We took a break from work yesterday and went looking for Natal Snoek (Queen Mackerel). It was one of those days when it's worth getting up at 3am to go fishing with hubby ... well, he fishes and I skipper the boat when we're looking for these fish. There was a 2,5m swell running which is fine as we have to go relatively close to shore and pay careful attention in case a rogue wave decides to stand up. On Saturday we witnessed a skiboat nearly flip over on a wave and it's not a pretty sight. Well, we didn't catch anything, the conditions were too perfect, but who cares, it's days like that that make you feel glad to be alive :)) (the fish probably agree too, lol)

I originally tried a different approach (smaller boat and waves carved from cake). I tried to replicate courtneyscakes sailboat wave, but I didn't plan it out well enough...so it didn't work and I had to rebake. So I just made waves from fondant for a similar effect. But thank you courtneyscakes for helping me out and for the advice.

We met up this morning at Umhlanga Pier before sunrise. The stiff breeze died down soon enough but there were minimal clouds. I was also dressed for work in long pants and was hesitant to get low down in and amongst the rocks and wash. I used two images here. 1st was an 8 sec F14 - ISO 50 for the foreground. 2nd was a 1/60 sec F14 - ISO 6400 for the ski-boat and sky: Canon 6D, 17/40mm.

WORLD CHAMPION SKI BOAT

Well, I am sure this is the first time two ski boats have ventured along the Pow Burn through Prestwick Golf Course!! These must have come from being out at sea and then came along the Pow Burn believing it would take them inland ~ they actually managed to get under this small bridge and another before realising they couldn't go any further!!
