From imagination
1-2 minutes
Sometime last week, using actually a previous beta version of the app.
These were conceptual sketches I made, in my process to the final solution the good team at Cargo Cosmetics approved, which you can view here:

A very rough tracing sketch where I had to invent many of the details -- like the odd eyes and nose --because I couldn't find them in the photo, which shows my rank beginner status in drawing and ignorance of anatomy. Even though this doesn't look quite right I've decided to show it anyway, for now, simply as another example so far of my nondoodling fumbling around with iPad art apps. I might replace it with an improved version or, more likely, just delete it in a few days. You can see why I often retreat to patterns or abstract forms that don't have to resemble anything accurately.
By the way, that glass of beer is just as big in the photograph.
Here's the flickr photo my drawing is somewhat based on (my apologies to the photographer for not doing justice to his wonderful picture): www.flickr.com/photos/sashimanek/42102520/
I spend many hours browsing through flickr and looking again and again at my many favorites, which include some amazingly good line drawings. So if you want to see how good digital drawing can be, one place you can start is to look is at my flickr Favorites. For example, don't miss the drawings of Tom Pokinko and of Julio Giacomelli. Then look at their other drawings and the flickr groups linked to their drawings. I should put together some galleries of my favorite flickr drawings.
This rough linear was created in 1998 to accompany an article about advancing technology creating a global village Marshall McLuhan predicted.
The client had me go in another direction, and this illustration was never completed.
Passing the time at a TIFF post-mortem meeting. I think the reimagined SMiLE album had just come out. Pen on notepad, either 2005, 2006, or 2007.

Linear rough for corporate commission. U fill in the word bubbles yourself. Blue pencil , paper, 1994
Line drawing done in SketchTime, traced from an outstanding black and white photograph that also includes another person with an important but subtle expression that I couldn't get right, so I had to leave her out of this drawing. Someone was praising my contour line drawings (thank you) and recommending I stick with them or focus on them. In general, I do think of this style as one of my strengths, but it's not what I'm interested in pursuing at the moment - quite the opposite in fact as I've been drawing from the inside out and and with a great amount of chaos and seemingly random marks. Still, when the right subject presents itself, so does the style.

A minimalist tracing with a few narrow lines. Because of the strength of the photo it is based on these lines seem to almost fit together, in spite of or even possibly because of their clumsiness. Here is the photo (one of my favorites for a long time) that I traced: www.flickr.com/photos/gwilmore/180198450/

When the Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson released his eponymous solo album in 1988, after years of inactivity, there was a huge media coverage of his return to recording. I did this series of concept sketches around 1989, but never got around to doing a finished illustration of one of my favourite 20th century pop composers.

A line drawing tracing that radically crops and simplifies the photo it is based on. For example, I chose not to include the three or four prominent, parallel wrinkles across his forehead, because I didn't want to draw so much attention to them. I was more interested in the tilt of his head, his chiseled nose and cheeks, and his eyes peering ahead. He's walking with a cane, probably with some difficulty.
