Sketch and watercolor of parts of a big leaf maple for an assignment in a sketching and watercolor class from Jane LaFazio.

I have planned to sketch this space, full of Budleia, enclosed and up for development. I had no idea that this morning would bring the arrival of the Council and affiliate bods, so it was a quick dash for the essential kit. What was most interesting about the experience is the way the residents and the poeple from the council tended to keep themselves separate. One man from the group came up soon after I arrived and said " ...and what are you up to young lady" I chose to focus on" the young lady" as a compliment especially seeing as I will be fortyand in a couple of years and stated the obvious "sketching!" I offered a friendlier enquirer who is also a resident in the area a more comprehensive explanation as several people were quite baffled by my interest in this piece of wasteland " I like spaces that are about to change, and the opportunity to sketch the people who make that change are here, now! what an opportunity. Often we see places and then we see the changed place and accept it as if it always was. For me this space is a home to wildlife, the awesome expression of nature when left to itself. Soon this will be different and here are the people who will change that. I wished I was quicker and better at sketching them so I could get more of a likeness of them. One of the resendents was quite angry with them and related a tale about one of them leaving his wife for a young person in another city, living there with her for some time and then returning and placing himself up for re-election. He was clearly angry about this.

I think that other poeple telling me their stories when I am out sketching is one of the most wonderful and beautiful aspects of it. It is a very human, beautiful and necessary.

For the sketch hunt "Water in the city" The "3 graces" fountain under a very cloudy day. A meeting point known for every one. There is always life near water.

Pour la chasse au croquis, l'eau dans la ville, vite fait sur la Comédie, la fontaine des 3 grâces. Plein de vie près de l'eau, même sous un temps menaçant.

In case you were wondering how well Moleskine®s are bound… they are bound well.

The same table shot to feature the graffiti.

...some time in our lives we did DOODLE on sand...life can be simple

This is my sketching stool. I got it for about $15 (costs like $19 now) from REI, and it's really really light, but very sturdy. I attached a camera-bag strap t it to carry it over my shoulder, it's a perfect and unobtrusive sketching companion. No longer must I sit on the dirty pavement. My only gripe is that I'm now quite high up and my paints are usually on the ground. But otherwise I love it.

If you're wondering, I wanted blue. They only had green in stock.

I’ve drawn this as an illustration to a new page on my site: Materials. Since I am so often asked what pens etc I use, I thought it would be nice to have a whole page showing what I use in my entire sketching experience, not just micron pens and cotman paints but my shoulder-bag and sketching stool. It’s not completely comprehensive however; I stopped short at revealing what I eat and what music I listen to while sketching.

Kris and I went for a walk in the Oregon Garden this afternoon. I only carried a small notebook and one pen in my coat pocket. After our walk I waited while Kris looked in the gift shop and I did this quick sketch. Lately I've been thinking a lot about the purpose of a sketch. I'm thinking a sketch is a diagram of your experience. The question at this point for me is, "how much realism is required and what's the minimum needed to capture a moment"? This sketch was an experiment to see what I could accomplish by just sketching the shadows. For me this sketch stands for resting in the shade after a walk on a beautiful sunny day.

Pataphysical Studios is building a Time Machine for our next art exhibit. On a balmy spring afternoon, Drs. Rindbrain and Fabio created more visualizations of what the Time Machine might look like.

We sketched out several ideas for the inside and outside walls, for discussion purposes. On each side of the main screen, we designed round portholes through which we could interact with our guests -- or show scenes from the past or future. Behind each porthole would be a magic box that could feature artifacts from distant times -- or the head of a historical figure, projected onto a ‘life cast’. The rest of the inside walls would be used for other interactive artworks such as the Crazy Clock, which sings quotes about time when you press its big green button.

On the outside walls, we sketched out a Face Box that you could stick your head in to get your picture taken. It would include an Infinity Mirror made of LED strips cycling through the colors of the rainbow, with a camera at the end of this light tunnel. We also sketched out where time wonderboxes could be placed on the side walls, proposing that the left wall focus on the past and the right wall on the future. A graphic timeline across both walls could support that idea.

It was a productive meeting and we look forward to presenting these ideas to our fellow doctors at the next Time Machine meeting.

A cartoon entitled "The Member for Gravesend" showing

Mr. W. W. Jacobs, speaking to Sir Gilbert Parker (who was MP for Gravesend in Kent, England):

Text: "It's no sort of use talking to them about the Unity and Integrity of the Empire. All they want is that you should sit down on your hat and stand rum all round."

Part of a collection of materials gathered by Jack Adams for his book 'Seated with the Mighty', a biography of Sir Gilbert Parker, published in 1979. The materials were donated in March 1987.

These are some small (2" x 1.5") polymer 'sketches' taking no longer than 10min to make (not including painting). Just filling in time waiting for stuff - paint to dry, sculpey to bake etc.

July is time for celebrating the 5th anniversary of I Have Wings... so I thought this special set would be a nice way to do it! what do you think?

Uxbridge Ontario, Canada hosts the York-Durham Heritage Railway which operates a tourist train from this lovely old station. The red circle above the platform is an old mechanical Stop sign, I guess when this was a regular passenger railway it was a request signal. Drawn with a Fountain Pen and Pentel water brush.

Day out with my daughter and trying to sketch perspectives.

I have to practice painting green ground and my watercolour sketches look like colouring-in projects :)

This looks like it is floating in air.
