Most of my sketches can be better developed into finished color pieces even though the idea also works in black and white.
Hearts Afire was designed for color and nothing else. A dark archway in the background contrasting the white splash across her chest ending in a bigger splash of burning edges/embers off her shoulder. Deeple purple/blue hues used in her hair/derby/goggles/hosiery/lips and power gloves ...ans a bright red heart sewn on her chest.

Here are some of the pages from my sketchbook that show thumbnails and idea thinking for my illustrations. The pages best show how I think and how I generate ideas that could be developed. You can see this by the small thumbnails with arrows coming off them to show what the idea could develop in to.
The pages on the bottom right are of my experimentation stages, when I was trying to experiment with the images I created digitally. I wanted the image to have more texture and feel to it, so I created one using ink, acrylic paints, pastels and cardboard and ripped the images to make it look more interesting. This was a creative process, as I was able to create the image digitally print on alternative materials including acetate which I further experimented with by scrunching up and even using a projected image onto a blank white wall using a light from my phone. The other image was created by chance as I when I was using the ink it split in a way in which it reminded me of a blood spatter. So I placed the images so the ink would go over his head, in the place where he was shot.
Here's another one of the painting I did while my light was burned out in my studio on Wednesday night and I should report that my lights are happily fixed up on my ceiling fan. :-)
