I am guessing the sizes. The 75 ft schooner has a modern sail rig with a staysail furled between the 2 masts. The 20 ft double-ender with tanbark sails is rigged as a yawl with a Gunter mainsail ( a variation on a gaff-rig where the gaff is puled up tight to the mast). Such crafts are also know as canoe yawls although this hull is rather heavy for a canoe. The 10 ft rowboat is has a spritsail which uses a sprit boom to hold up the top corner of the sail; the lower end of the sprit boom attaches to the mast with a rope called a snotter. Spritsails fold down to a small size and are often stowed in lifeboats. The wind was delightfully brisk that day. This is a Grey-headed Albatross photographed at Shag Rocks, which is 150 miles west of South Georgia, where it breeds. It is a rare albatross whose world population was estimated at 250,000 individuals back in 2004, but the population is on a downward trajectory so it is likely to be much rarer than that now, largely due to fisheries by-catch. It has been classified as endangered by IUCN. It is the same size and general appearance of Black-browed Albatross, except that it has an all-grey head and a yellow-edged dark bill. Its scientific name chrysostoma translates as gold mouth, and the generic name Thalassarche means commander of the sea.

The horse was pasturing near a black-winged stilt nest. The male flew near the horse, wounded pretended to be and it flew about before his muzzle, provoking him, so that it varied his trajectory. In this case, the horse was not one of his predators, but everything and it was able this way to distract his attention.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to view, comment, and fave my photo. It’s really appreciated. 😊

Medium-sized antpitta that is uncommon in the foothills and lower subtropics from Venezuela to Peru. Occurs on the ground in wet montane forest from around 700–1,800 m.

This adult was watched near Wild Sumaco lodge (Napo/Ecuador) at the regular feeding station. A very plain antpitta but as always (for me at least) still a thrill to see.

Thank you all my dears Flickr friends for your sweet comments! I do appreciate them very, very much

Did sliders for the kids.

Well, they´re actually smaller than sliders.

I was driving out of Kananaskis country (lots of trees) when I noticed that cloud. As I left the forest, and entered the rolling hills, that cloud grew bigger and bigger. I snapped a few pictures and then embraced myself as I drove back home, hidden somewhere in that mess. Needless to say, this was amazing to witness and an honour to capture.

I've learned that it doesn't matter how big your house is, apparently, it is not big enough. ^_^

Thank you everyone for the appreciation, time and comments!!

Side note: Ignore the grass and it's a house on the ocean.

In Bluebirds, the blue colour is produced by the structure of the feather - there is no blue pigment. "Tiny air pockets in the barbs of feathers can scatter incoming light, resulting in a specific, non-iridescent color. Blue colors in feathers are almost always produced in this manner. Examples include the blue feathers of Bluebirds, Indigo Buntings, Blue Jay's and Steller's Jays."

This was not one of my 'usual' Mountain Bluebirds, and I was so happy to notice it, perched on a fence post. Managed to take about four rapid shots before a man, walking along a path leading from his property, caused it to fly. This handsome little bird made such a nice ending to my drive.

The weather forecast for yesterday was a risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon. My plan had been to start out early in the morning and be home before any storm could arrive. However, as tends to happen, it was late morning before I finally made it out the front door. I enjoyed seeing the build-up of clouds, but was fortunate that the storm stayed away.

It had been a while since I last drove out to the area I wanted to explore; maybe eight months or so. I was curious as to whether I was going to be able to find a bird that many people had been reporting recently. A species that is rarely seen in Alberta, though I had seen a number of them on a trip to Texas in March 2019. I did also see one at a different location, at Frank Lake, but the extremely distant bird looked the size of a pin head.

My hope was that most people who wanted to see this bird had already been out there. My waiting till later paid off, as there was just one couple there. The bird was far away across on the other side of a pond, but my eyes eventually found it. I noticed two people walking fast towards it and I first thought they were unethical photographers. When I zoomed in, I could see that they were fishermen! The bird was flushed and fortunately flew that much closer to where I was standing, yet still quite a distance away. It was so interesting to watch this bird search every inch of the ground, several times catching a tiny fish. Suddenly, it flew, and I wondered what had spooked it. When I saw a photographer walking back through the trees closest to us, my question was answered. Am I really the only person who is not intent on getting inflight shots, even if the bird has to be flushed in order to get them? Anyway, I was so delighted to get the chance to watch it for a while.

On the way home, I drove the long way through my 'usual" area. I was surprised that I didn't see many birds, not even a Snipe. One Mountain Bluebird was so welcome.

I’m not sure which wild critters the food in this hanging wooden feeder was intended for. But there was no doubt who had dibs when I came upon the scene on Wednesday at a local historical site; Mr. Racoon was leisurely having his fill, while Mr. Squirrel was forced to wait his turn.
