Reed Warbler - Acrocephalus scirpaceus

The Reed Warbler is a medium-sized warbler of reedbeds. A summer visitor to the UK, it weaves its nest as a sling between two or three reed stems, and lays three to five eggs in it. Forming monogamous pairs, both parents raise the chicks.

Reed Warblers are common victims of brood-parasitism by Cuckoos.

It is migratory, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa.

Population:

UK breeding:

130,000 pairs

From time to time we need to view an image like this to put us in the overall Nature's context. The minuscule humans facing the Forces of Nature there, are like ants (please enlarge the image to see them on the edge of the cliff). Their presence provides scale to what you are looking at. The sheer size of the scene is tremendous.

Aldeyjarfoss (the waterfall) is certainly a beautiful sight but there are other beautiful views there, as this image shows. I invite you to take a look and see the details of the amazing basalt columns that follow the river after the waterfall. Nature at its best! To think that volcanic action and the passing of time created this marvel is awesome!

I suppose two bite size could be debateable.

A cactus (plural: cacti) is a member of the plant family Cactaceae, a family comprising about 127 genera with some 1750 known species of the order Caryophyllales. The word "cactus" derives, through Latin, from the Ancient Greek κάκτος, kaktos, Cacti occur in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Most cacti live in habitats subject to at least some drought. Many live in extremely dry environments, even being found in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water. Almost all cacti are succulents, meaning they have thickened, fleshy parts adapted to store water. Cacti are native to the Americas, ranging from Patagonia in the south to parts of western Canada in the north.

When I sighted this one it instantly flew off. I slowly followed. After a few more fly offs and follows, it stopped and appeared to size me up. After determining I was a tad too large to eat, it bobbed its head a few times and disappeared into the thick woods.

This was taken in White Sands National Park, New Mexico. At 275 square miles it is the largest gypsum sand desert in the world. I was reflecting on the magnitude of the landscape when I looked down and saw the beetle.

Size really is a relative concept.

Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths . An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female 'digests' the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Shot was taken with a 100mm macro lens. NSW, Australia

Love Life, Love Photography

About blackbird-sized and striking black-and-white. It has a very distinctive bouncing flight and spends most of its time clinging to tree trunks and branches, often trying to hide on the side away from the observer. Its presence is often announced by its loud call or by its distinctive spring 'drumming' display. The male has a distinctive red patch on the back of the head and young birds have a red crown. What they eat: Insects, seeds and nuts (Courtesy RSPB).

A medium-sized raptor with a rounded tail unlike other kites. Adults are unmistakable with a white head and breast contrasting with otherwise brick brown plumage. Juveniles are a darker brownish-black with a paler head and prominent white patches under the wings. Usually associated with both inland and coastal wetlands in tropical Asia, but it is largely restricted to coastal wetlands in Australia where it is alternately known as “Red-backed Sea Eagle.” Call is a distinctive nasal, drawn out, “Kyeeerrh.” (eBird)

This lovely kite flew over our heads several times, checking out the possibility of a snack. It had to compete with a couple of other raptors in the area. We saw these kites in the northern end of Australia before being replaced by other raptors further south.

Eagle-Eye Tours - Eastern Australia.

A medium sized woodpecker named after its rufous color and found much across the country in deciduous forests. The birds apparently have a strong preference for Bamboo forests and the place I visited last week has plenty of them.

I had sighted this bird several times before in previous trips when it was hunting insects on the trees. They prefer termites and particularly Arboreal ants and larvae. The birds forage in pairs and are often seen together. One interesting thing is that the birds nest within the nests of Arboreal / Tree ants. We had seen so many of these arboreal nests in the forests - large brown muddy bulbous things on tree tops. I wasn't aware that these woodpeckers nest within them. I guess they have a ready supply of food for their chicks.

Thanks so much in advance for your views, faves and feedback - much appreciated.

Partially unwrapped, and with one bite gone, it's a Milky Way "fun size" bar. Consisting of nougat topped with caramel and covered with milk chocolate, each bar weighs just 17 grams and measures two inches in length.

Life-sized rusted steel sculptures on a ridge above I-90 and the Columbia River near Vantage, WA. A gift to the state on its centennial anniversary in 1989, the monument honors the Native American Tribes, the State, and the wild horses that once roamed freely. There are a total of 15 horse sculptures up there, atop a steep and hot hike!

The Columbia River is in the mid-ground, the town of Vantage, WA lies on the other side of the river, and the dry Cascade Mountain foothills loom in the distance.

While outside watering plants in the backyard a couple of days ago, I noticed this large Grasshopper that was sprayed with water and jumped on the bricks of our house for safety. I went to get my camera and take some macro images of this Texas sized Grasshopper. I must say the details on this Grasshopper are Awesome and if you look close enough you will see the water drop. Hope Y'all like it.Lol:Gaston (aka Gasssman)

Actually if you look closely there are 5, counting the 2 lifeboats by the cruise ship. There is a tour excursion boat in the foreground, a tender lifeboat on the right, and the Royal Princess. If you take a good look at the Royal Princess you will see that a movie is being shown on the big screen on the pool deck.
