Here's the remarkable Amy O'Neill
in a Betty Crocker-kind of domestic bliss
in her red apron in her cozy kitchen in her
Hollywood apartment last week. I offer this
as somewhat of an antidote to the bloody
visage of Amy in the Ghost & Spirit Show posted
below. Here she's in her happy space, having just
washed some dishes, and rehearsed the great song
"Rene & Georgette Magritte With The Dog
After The War," by Paul Simon, which she
performed
with me on guitar
at my Paulfest - a tribute to Paul Simon-
featuring two dozen performers at Kulak's
in North Hollywood
on October 12, 2006 -
the eve of Paul's 65th birthday.
Amy was entrancing, as always, in the
show, singing this beautiful song quite
sweetly, and then punctuating it with her
parasol spinning a ball on top.

I'm not a guitar player, my son is. Though I did try and learn it when I was in grade five, but that didn't last. As I've said before I'm good at starting something but not so good at finishing, though I am trying to change that :-)
Well I'm off to go start a fire. There's been a burn ban here for a number of weeks because it's been so dry but it's been lifted since we've had a couple days of rain. We've got lots of brush and stuff to burn.
Enjoy your Wednesday!

Danelectro was one of several manufacturers to supply the Sears mail order catalogue company with Silvertone branded guitars. Harmony, Kay and Teisco were others. This entry level model came complete with a valve amp built into the case. I have not tried plugging mine in yet as I will first need to get a transformer to run it on the UK power supply and also get the circuitry tested. Safety standards have moved on somewhat in the last 55 years!!!
This guitar is of a very basic hollow bodied plywood construction on a wooden frame with a single "lipstick" pick up, so called because the pickup cases were in deed made from surplus lipstick tubes.
Despite their low cost Danelectros became famed for their great tone and notable players include Jimm Page, Syd Barrett, Beck, Elvis Costello, Arto Lindsay and many, many more.
I got this one from my friend Alfie Bernardi who runs a vintage guitar shop in Brighton.

Trying to decide what to order but I’ve only got 10 bucks in my pocket. This is the G&L guitar’s dilemma.

Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.
These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.
I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.
Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

Day Twenty Two of Thirty days of Giving Thanks:
I am very thankful for Alberta, my beautiful Carvin acoustic guitar- not because of its monetary value by any means but for what she means to me and what experiences I have had with her. After six years of a 365, I cannot remember if I’ve shared this story, but I will anyways.
When I first learned to dream and go after things that I wanted to have, accomplish, see, or do I was utterly penniless and in dire straits. I had about $20 to my name for groceries every week and often went without so my wife could eat. The bills mounted, wolves were at my door breaking it down, and things were not changing. But I still believed in what I had learned, that we can focus and believe and make our dreams a reality- and this guitar was to be the test of that.
Up until then I’d achieved dreams but they were dreams that didn’t cost money, and if they did it was very minimal. This was a pretty big expense and I was paycheck to paycheck so the world would have told me that there was no way I’d ever have her in my hands. I visualized and pictured myself playing this, ordering the guitar: every imaginable detail. Before I knew it I had the money- but I had an expense come up that took precedent. I didn’t give up but kept on and doors opened up for overtime and additional income. Before I knew it, I had the money and ordered it.
I remember every detail of the day it came: tracking its delivery through UPS, running home on my lunch break to pick it up, opening the case, etc. Pictures really never do justice on the craftsmanship of Carvin Guitars.
The first time I played this guitar publicly was about 10 weeks later at my sister’s funeral. I had hidden the purchase from my family because I didn’t think they’d understand what this guitar meant to me as they never really understood what music meant to me; I knew they’d think I was being irresponsible. I decided that was stupid to hide behind such fears, and I sat down with my dad and talked about it and showed it to him- I sat by my sister’s casket and played haunting melody after melody; it was my way of “showing” it to her and my way of grieving.
Hands down, this is the best acoustic I’ve played on in my life… but more so when I pick up Alberta, yes I name all my guitars, I remember to believe in my dreams… and I NEVER want to forget that!

17-01-10I needed something quick today. I have an exam tomorrow and I need to revise. So I fired up the iPhone and hipstamatic and took a photo of my old acoustic. This thing has been around the world with me twice and still holds a tune!
Manual Page Read: Page 38 - The LCD Monitor.
Images Viewed: I have added my flickr contacts to my RSS reader so now I will see all my contacts photos as and when they post them without having to actually log in to flickr.
Other Inspiration: No time! I have to revise! Hmm. I suppose having a deadline can be inspiration in itself.
On Twitter.

I saw something like this with an electric guitar and got up and took this shot. With my acoustic. Because that's all that I have.
I think the textures of the wall came out really nice.
Hope you had a nice Tuesday. Tomorrow's Wednesday - The worst day of the week. Best of Luck.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George Harrison
There is a story about this guitar but I think I will wait until another time to tell the tale. But I must explain that my Baby Taylor 'weeps' because I have not even begun to learn to play. At least not Yet!!!! ;-)
