The Citadelle Laferrière (Haitian Creole: Sitadèl-Laferyè), commonly known as La Citadelle (English: "The Citadel"), is a large early 19th-century fortress located in Milot in Nord, Haiti. It is situated on the Bonnet à l'Evêque mountaintop located approximately 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) uphill from the town of Milot, 27 kilometres (17 mi) south of the city of Cap-Haïtien, and 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southwest of the Three Bays Protected Area.
The Citadelle Laferrière was commissioned by Haitian revolutionary Henri Christophe, for whom it is also named Citadelle Henri Christophe, and built by tens of thousands of former slaves. It was the main fortification of the newly independent First Empire of Haiti's defensive strategy against a potential French incursion. The Citadelle is one of few Africans in New World-derived military fortifications in the New World, as well as the first example of African-derived colonial architecture. Designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1982 along with the Sans-Souci Palace, also commissioned by Christophe, the fortress is universally regarded as a landmark of Haiti.
Completed in 1820 the fortress was built as part of a system of fortifications designed to thwart potential foreign incursions; notably the French (Haiti was under French domination, the Haitians defeated them and built the fortress to prevent them seizing the country again; it turned out to be unnecessary, for Napoleon, occupied with his European campaigns, never tried to regain the country). During the stronghold's conceptual phase, Christophe was a general in the Haitian army and chief administrator of the country's northern regions. The ensuing power struggle he had with his rival and fellow revolutionary Alexandre Pétion, would result in his self-declaration as king of Northern Haiti in 1811.

Venäjän keisarinna Katariina Suuri perusti Davidovin linnoituskaupungin 1773. Linnoituksen rakentaminen aloitettiin Marttilan kylässä Salpausselän harjun kohdalla kesällä 1773. Tavoitteena oli ympyränmuotoinen linnoitus, jonka sisällä oli ruutukaavoitettu kaupunki siihen kuuluvine kasarmeineen, varastoineen, talousrakennuksineen, kirkkoineen ja upseerien asuinrakennuksineen. Linnoituskaupunkia ympäröivät puolustusvarustukset oli tarkoitus varustaa ainakin viidellä bastionilla ja pohjoisosaan oli sijoitettu linnoituksen sitadelli, sisälinnoitus. Bastionien välille rakennetiin kurtiinit ja porttiaukkojen suojaksi raveliinit. Linnoituksen pohjoispuolelle suunniteltua kaponieerilinnoitusta ei ennen töiden lopettamista ollut ehditty rakentaa. Tämänkaltaisessa kunnossa linnoitus oli ennen ns. Kustaan sodan alkamista vuonna 1788.
Linnoitustöiden johtajaksi keisarinna Katariina II:n nimeämä kreivi Aleksandr Suvorov otti Taavetin linnoituksen vahvistustyöt linnoitussuunnitelmiinsa siitä huolimatta, että strategiset painopisteet olivat siirtyneet selvästi rannikolle. Taavetin linnoituksen toiminta sotavarustuksena päättyi jo vuonna 1803, kun linnoitus lakkautettiin ja sen rakennukset pantiin huutokaupalla myyntiin. 1800-luvun alkupuolella rakennukset purettiin kivijalkoineen niin tarkkaan, että linnoituksen kirkostakin on jäljellä vain pieni osa sen länsipäädyn perustusta. Nykypäivänä vain yksi ainoa rakennus on jäljellä linnoitusajalta, 1740-luvulla postikyytitaloksi alunperin rakennettu, myöhemmin kapakkana ja asuinrakennuksena toiminut puurakennus. Se sijaitsee linnoituksen itäpuolella lähellä vanhaa teiden risteysaluetta ja sitä sanotaan omistajansa mukaan Rusasen taloksi. Linnoitusalue toimi vielä 1800-luvun lopulla suomalaiseen sotaväkeen kuuluneen ns. reservikomppanian harjoituspaikkana. Sisälinnoituksen eteläpuolelle rakennettiin tässä vaiheessa kasarmi- ja varastorakennuksia.
Taavetin linnoitusmuuri on pääosin tuhoutunut jo 1800-luvulla Luumäen kuntakeskuksen kasvettua linnoituksen alueelle. Parhaiten säilyneen sitadelliosan Museoviraston ja työministeriön suorittama restaurointi on valmistumassa. Kunnostustyö ulottumista myös linnoitusmuurien alueelle ollaan suunnittelemassa. Sitadellissa järjestetään kesä-tapahtumia Kulttuuriympäristö.

The SITADEL building is one of the most recent additions to the University of Ottawa campus. Cheesy name, yes. But in passing it so many times on the way downtown I knew it would be extremely photogenic.
It's like the building was built to test DOF. The greenish/cyanish cast bothered me, but you can't beat having so many human subjects lined up in a row, and one with a story up front.
Prejudicial as it sounds, I felt sorry for him. He seemed like a socially-awkward loner, or at least a man who was lonely because he was Alone for Lunch.
I did two versions of this scene: one emphasizing his loneliness with minimal DOF, and another with maximum DOF to, well, emphasize DOF. I prefer the minimal shot.
The ground floor of SITADEL. On entering I was disappointed to find there wasn't as much space in the concourse as I'd imagined; I HAD been looking for a cathedral-like aura. But the lighting and the repeating patterns were still excellent camera fodder. Cropped some boring concrete on the left.
I knew the colours and shapes in this corridor made it interesting, but most of my photos of it were boring. Solution? Tilt the camera. That increased the attention to the diagonal geometry.
Incidental rant: a lot of amateurs think skewed perspective instantly makes a photo artistic. It doesn't. It just happened to work here!

The lighting on the upper floors of SITADEL is surreal - this image has had little if any Photoshopping done to it.
When I visited most of the area was lit by dim natural light, but you'd see these lamps on in areas the sun couldn't touch. The effect was futuristic and abstract. In fact, this would've been a dull photo if the "madeness" of the lamp had been obvious.
