Met Hanuman Singh today at the Dastkaar Mela (Crafts Fair) at Mehrauli, New Delhi. He is a "Lohar"or blacksmith. On display was some amazingly detailed work, including handmade iron replicas of common bugs. He agreed to get his pictures clicked and requested a print, which is now ready and will be dispatched in a day.

Some additional information on his particular tribe and customs:

Gadia Lohars are a nomadic community of Rajasthan, India. They are also found in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. They are lohar (ironsmith) by profession who move on from one place to another place on bullock carts, which in Hindi are called gadi, hence the name 'Gadia Lohar'. These Lohars are different from the Lohar clan of Iran, Pakistan and India. They usually make and repair agricultural and household implements.

Their origin is shrouded in legend. Their forefathers were blacksmiths in the army of Maharana Pratap of Mewar. When Mewar fell to the Mughals they pledged never to return to their homeland and never to settle anywhere else until Rana's hegemony was restored.

The bullock carts are their homes. They lead a hard life and despite the vagaries of weather and the uncertainties of their trade, they, children of the desert, are a handsome and cheerful lot and remain buoyantly dignified, unmindful of their hard life.

The Gadia Lohars are characterized by five taboos: not to return to the Chittorgarh Fort, not to live in permanently settled homes, not to light a candle at night, not to keep their cots in the carts in the light manner and not to keep a rope for drawing water from a well. They attribute their taboos to their Rajput ancestors who, it is believed prepared iron weapons for the army of a Rajput ruler of Chittorgarh but escaped from the Fort when it was attacked by Akbar. They then pledged to become a nomadic people observing the above self-imposed taboos till the freedom and glory of the Fort were revived.

Generously gifted, Yuvraj Singh is looked upon as a strong, fearless natural destined for great things. Two months short of his 19th birthday, he made an almost messianic entry into international cricket, toppling Australia in the Nairobi Mini-World Cup in 2000-01, with a blistering 84 and some scintillating fielding. In time he was to supplement these skills with clever, loopy left-arm spin. While Yuvraj's ability to hit the ball long and clean were instantly recognised, he was soon found to be troubled by quality spin and perceived to lack commitment, traits for which he temporarily lost his place in the one-day side.

But on returning, for the last two one-dayers against Zimbabwe in early 2002, he swung the series India's way with a match-winning innings in each game, and then went to England and played a key role in three Indian chases in their dream run in the NatWest tri-series. It took 15 months more, and an injury to his captain, Sourav Ganguly, for Yuvraj to get a Test look-in. On the third such opportunity, against Pakistan on the first day on a greentop at Lahore, he stroked a stunning century off 110 balls. The 2005-06 season proved to be a watershed for Yuvraj, with 1161 runs at 58 in the one-dayers, as he transformed himself into one of the keystones in India's batting line-up. He was soon preferred over VVS Laxman in Tests when India went in with five batsmen, but a lean series in the West Indies meant that he was still struggling to match potential with performance.

Yuvraj picked up his form in one-day cricket, and overcame a knee injury sustained before the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy to book a spot to the 2007 World Cup. India were knocked out early, but Yuvraj continued his form through the year. There were two highlights in the second half of the year: the first, a record six sixes in one Stuart Broad over in a 12-ball fifty during India's fairytale run at the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, and an awesome Test hundred against Pakistan at Bangalore, which swung the momentum back India's way. Yuvraj was included in India's Test squad for a four-Test series in Australia, but failed. He then captained Kings XI Punjab to the semi-finals of the IPL.

Consecutive ODI hundreds against England earned Yuvraj a Test spot after Ganguly's retirement, and he stepped up with two sparkling half-centuries - the first coming in an epic 387-run chase.

comments of sangat : I know that the heavens celebrate when a soul of this purity returns home – but as the angles cry “Jai Jai”, we on earth struggle with our heavy hearts. What can we say? What can be said? He was a man of rare depth and insight – and he will be missed by many.

RAJINDER PARMAR

I requested of him once about unhealthy thoughts and “NAFUR” avastha and Bhai Sahib very politely advised to perform Ardas to Guru Granth Sahib – as Ardas can only help you get there – which is an approach only a True GurSikh can share/preach with others. parminder singh aujla, VA

He told me more then once that he has been trained to recite kirtan thinking that Guru Sahib himself is sitting in front and listening. He was like a Light House for me, who preached and lived Sikhism to the fullest. Manmohan Singh

Hey everyone. I wanted to officially share the news that Gurjeet and I were blessed with a baby boy, Akaal Singh. I can’t really explain to you what it feels like. It’s so many different changes and experiences at once. I am incredibly grateful and feel very fortunate to have him as my son.

I hope I can update my flickr stream more often again with lots of photos of him!

This picture was taken moments after he was born.

According to Wikipedia, "Princess Sophia Alexandrovna Duleep Singh (8 August 1876 – 22 August 1948) was a prominent suffragette in the United Kingdom."

The mural was produced by artful_skecha who has a nice time-lapse video of it being painted. According to his website, "Artful Skecha (Randeep Singh Sohal) is a London based artist whose art is used as a platform to express himself freely and network with people from around the world."

I have absolutely no idea why there is a mural of Sophia Duleep Singh in Ipswich, but I rather like it.

Joginder Singh was an acquaintance of my folk's and a famous Kenyan rally driver. I think he won the Safari rally at least three times.
