The Merlion (Malay: Singa-Laut) is an imaginary creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, used as a mascot of Singapore. Its name combines "mer" meaning the sea and "lion". The fish body comes from Singapore's ancient name back when it was a fishing village — Temasek — meaning "sea town" in Javanese. The lion head represents Singapore's original name — Singapura — meaning "lion city" or "kota singa".

The symbol was designed by Fraser Brunner, a member of the Souvenir Committee and curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, for the logo of the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in use from 26 March 1964 to 1997. The Merlion continues to be its trademark symbol since 20 July 1966. Although the STB changed their logo in 1997, the STB Act continues to protect the Merlion symbol. Approval must be received from STB before it can be used. The Merlion appears frequently on STB-approved souvenirs.

On 15 September 1972, then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew officiated the installation ceremony of the Merlion statue. The original Merlion statue used to stand at the mouth of the Singapore River, at the tip of the current The Fullerton Waterboat House Garden with Anderson Bridge as its background. The Merlion is a male.

It was conceptualised by the vice-chancellor of the University of Singapore (now known as National University of Singapore) then, Kwan Sai Kheong. Made from November 1971 to August 1972 by the late Singapore craftsman, Mr Lim Nang Seng, it measures 8.6 metres high and weighs 40 tonnes. Its body is made of cement, skin from porcelain plates and eyes from small red teacups. The project cost about S$165,000.

The Merlion (or Singa-Laut in Malay) is the official mascot of Singapore, depicted as a mythical creature with a lion's head and the body of a fish. It is widely used to represent both the city state and its people in sports teams, advertising, branding, tourism and as a national personification.

Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore (or Republik Singapura in Malay), is a sovereign city-state and island country in Southeast Asia. It lies one degree (137 kilometers or 85 miles) north of the equator, at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, with Indonesia's Riau Islands to the south and Peninsular Malaysia to the north. Singapore's territory consists of one main island along with 62 other islets. Since independence, extensive land reclamation has increased its total size by 23% (130 square kilometers or 50 square miles). The country is known for its transition from third world to first world in a single generation, under the leadership of its founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.

Stamford Raffles founded colonial Singapore in 1819 as a trading post of the British East India Company. It gained independence from the U.K. in 1963 by federating with other former British territories to form Malaysia, but separated two years later over ideological differences, becoming a sovereign nation in 1965. After early years of turbulence and despite lacking natural resources and a hinterland, the nation developed rapidly as an Asian Tiger economy, based on external trade and its workforce.

There are four official languages in Singapore: English (common and first language), Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil. Almost all Singaporeans are bilingual.

Story of Manikmaya, Singa Nglaras, NUS, Singapore, Nikkor 85/2

Halo semua.....

Resep yang saya pilih judul aslinya : Choux Cake with Almond Cream And

Strawberries dari buku The good cook : Cakes & Pastries, penerbit Time

Life Book 1980. Bikin pertama kali pakai acara salah baca resep

pula....gulanya kelebihan beberapa sendok...jadinya bener2 coklat agak

gosong gitu...pokoknya gak sesuai hati deh.

tempat isian cream) jadi saya modifikasi sesuai selera saya. Namanya

juga saya rumah jadi Choux Almod Cream n Strawberry. Rasa akhir

kalah sama cream bikinan hotel bintang 5 dah!...he he he....

Choux Almond Cream n’ Strawberry

Bahan :

bubuk jadi.

500 gram Strawberry iris tipis atau potong dadu

250 ml susu

1 ½ sdm maizena

125 gram Brown sugar

1 butir telur dikocok

1 sdt vanilla ekstrak

300 ml whipping atau double cream - resep aslinya 1 ¼ liter tapi saya kurangi

1 sdm almond liquer (optional) – saya skip

Choux Dough

180 ml air

125 gram mentega

1 sdm gula

150 gram tepung terigu protein tinggi

4 butir telur

Cara membuat :

1. Campurkan air, mentega, gula, perasan lemon dan kulit lemon

kemudian didihkan.

2. Tambahkan tepung terigu dan aduk hingga kalis kemudian dinginkan.

Ulangi

hingga kulit soes terisi semua.

11.Sajikan.

Selamat mencoba yah.

Salam

uchiet

As you all know by now - I love my dogs, they love me (I hope) and most of the time they even love each other. This is one of those nice moments, when I caught Singa using Rosa's bottom as a pillow. Since I use this bum as a pillow myself sometimes, I can recommend it - nice, soft, warm and shaping itself nicely after my head's shape. Just perfect!! (that sounded just so strange :) ). They are Pharaohounds, by the way.

A year ago in Singapore, I adopted Singa the Kindness Lion. He's been lonely, though--so a nice flickr friend in SG helped me adopt some friends for him. They arrived recently, and have now been released from quarantine.

Unfortunately, these pizzas that are made to order remind me more of frozen pizzas. The crust was more crispy than chewy. I think they used to be much better.

As a pup Singa got a tiger-stripy fleecy toy (not really a toy, but a thingy for keeping pens in). It's still around - barely. The few remaining parts are highly loved and a favourite for holding on to when running around madly and attacking the other girls. Here Singa and Pippi have a bit of a running/wrestling play in the garden. Oh, I almost forgot, we call the toy Tigge ;)

She is lovely now, but she was way cute as a pup too!! We're so happy to have her with us - every day is a gift!

Thanx, Singa, for just being around and making me smile!

Singa, our youngest Pharaoh Hound, and Groda are really good friends. Groda loves to rub herself against anything and the dogs are no exception. Singa loves it and comes back to me with her face full of cathairs and I'm allergic to cats :).

Oh yes, she wants Pippi to move. It's not very comfy with Pharaoh bones under her. She doesn't care if Pippi was there first - the world circles round Singa!!
