This church, like many of the places I am drawn to, has lived a past life filled with people who have died, or moved on. It is starting to more rapidly break down in the absence of life - no paint protects the board any longer, and microbes, bacteria, and freeze-thaw are removing its flesh - I called this one 'Ribcage' because it is reminiscent of carcasses that you see all too often on the sides of the road up here - usually deer or coyote - fur still mostly there, but an eye socket or ribcage is often visible - poking out. I think this one has less than 5 years left.

Sunrise photo of a house that is fading quickly, but one that I have found compelling for quite awhile. It's behind a gate to a gravel quarry, but is not posted. So went out early on Saturday and grabbed a few shots. Interesting construction. Internal walls are horizontal lumber on the ground floor, not plaster and lath. Might have something to do with why it's still standing. Beautiful old place.

Developed in Tmax developer for 5 minutes, RODI stop for 1 minute, and 5 minutes in fix.

Sinar F, Fujinon 135mm f5.6, Kodak E100 cross-processed in C-41.

I have been waiting for the leaves on the cottonwoods here to have a nice overall yellow, and this past weekend, they did. I refer to this house as 'the piano house' because there is an old upright piano in the living room that has long since tipped over and sort of exploded. The floors are caving in and the inside is a wreck, but the shell from this side still has a nice intactness to it. It was a lovely sunrise, and the colors on this came out pretty good.

I shot 4 sheets at this spot on this day - 2x2460 Aerocolor and 2xKodak Ektachrome 100. I wanted to see the differences between E6, C41, and E100 cross-processed in C41.

This sheet is Ektachrome cross-processed in C41. 5 minute pre-wash, 3:15 developer, 1 minute wash in RODI, 4 minute blix, and 6 minute wash. Came out nice and saturated, though the color cast was definitely on the yellow side - color corrected in Lightroom.

This is the massive spillway for Lake Sakakawea in N. Central ND. The gates themselves have only been opened a handful of times during high water. The lake level can usually be controlled by the water removed on the other side of the dam at the hydroelectric power plant inflow structure. This dam is huge - this is just the overflow spillway. Was a lovely morning. Could have used a few clouds in the sky though.

Sinar F, Fujinon 135mm f5.6, Kodak Tmax 100 4x5, orange filter.

Took exact same shot on Ektachrome. Will be interesting to see how that turns out. Anyone ever cross process E100 in C41?

This photo shows the head dam and start of the 74 mile-long McClusky canal. The canal leaves the east side of Lake Audubon - an artificial lake fed from Lake Sakakawea (itself created by impounding the Missouri River at the Garrison Dam). The canal feed a series of lakes and supplies water for agricultural irrigation and for municipal drinking water supplies. Eventually, the plan is to extend all the way to the east side of the state to get water to Fargo and Grand Forks.

I didn't know this thing was even here until doing some Google Earth research for abandoned structures. There is a maintained road on each side of the canal and I drove the canal for maybe 10 miles.

Neat structure.

5 minute water prewash, 5 minutes in Tmax developer, 1 minute stop in DI water, 5 minute fix - all at room temp (68F).

This is some sort of weir control structure near the backside of Roosevelt Park in Minot, ND.

This thing must have been built in the 60's or 70's as it totally has the mid century modern vibe. First ever shot on the new Chroma 6x17 back on the Sinar F. I might need a slightly wider lens with this back - couldn't back up far enough to get the scene as I wanted it in the camera - still, I think this came out great - was playing with shallow depth of field on this one - just f11.

Ilford XP2+ pulled two stops to ISO 100. C41 processed 2:45 minutes at 101F.

Same location as the cross-processed E100 shot, a very slightly wider angle, but this shot was taken within 5 minutes of the first so as to minimize light or color differences from the rising sun.

This image is definitely less saturated than the cross-processed E100, but it still definitely has punch. The sky definitely is more similar to the true colors that day. The blue of the sky was a bit washed out in the E100 - I wonder if blues suffer with E100 when cross processing - the oranges certainly did not!

I will be sending off my E100 sheets to The Darkroom this weekend, so it will be a while before I can do the third leg of this comparison. Interesting results so far though - I feel like cross processing E100 is a thing I may be doing more of.

Sinar 4x5 and Polaroid Type 55 shot from 22 years ago.

Sinar F, Fujinon 135mm f5.6, Kodak Aerocolor 2460, 4x5.

This image marks several first for me. This is my very first exposure on 4x5 large format, my very first sheet loaded in a film holder, and the first time developing C-41 at home. Phew. I had 2 sheets come out pretty well, and two that are super dense - my own fault for mis-exposures.

This is an old trolley line near one of my favorite spots to take pictures some 25 years ago near a an abandoned (and now completely gone) amusement park, Only the concrete infrastructure of this old trolley line remains here, now overgrown with forest.

A lot of folks don't seem to care for the color cast this Aerocolor 2460 film (aka Santacolor) has - but I kind of dig it. Cool with magenta-leaning shadows. Got the super-shaded deep, dark tones of these woods quite nice I think. It's a look, for sure.

This is a second shot from a location I visited earlier this year. There is a weird color fringe around the edges of the frame that is magenta-ey. I think there must have been a light leak in that film holder. Still, I like the colors in this one. Sun wasn't quite reaching this spot quite yet when the shutter was opened.
