In celebration of National Archives Month, archives and special collections libraries from throughout the region showcased their rarely seen holdings for the public in the fifth annual Sacramento Archives Crawl, on Saturday, October 3rd. Historic treasures from twenty-four Northern California institutions were displayed at four downtown host locations – the California State Archives, the California State Library, the Center for Sacramento History, and the Sacramento Public Library. Over 430 people visited the Center during the Crawl.
This year’s Archives Crawl featured a “History Scavenger Hunt,” where K-12 students answered questions about the documents and artifacts on display at the four crawl locations. Those correctly answering ten of the clues were then eligible to enter a drawing for a chance to win two iPad Mini 3s, one for a K-5 student and another for a 6-12 student.
Participants “crawled” between four host locations, all located within downtown Sacramento. At the four locations, the public saw archival collections on display and took behind-the-scenes tours. In addition, representatives from nineteen other archives and special collections libraries tabled at the host locations to discuss their archival collections - historic photographs, rare books, historic artifacts - and answer questions about how to connect with local history resources.
Archives Crawl passports were given to guests as they visited the host institutions. The passport provided a map of the event and information about the participating archives and special collection libraries. Event attendees who got their passport stamped at three of the four host sites were given a set of limited-edition commemorative coasters. The coasters honored the pub crawl theme of "Powered by the Past."
This event was made possible by financial support from the California State Library Foundation, the Gordon-Goldstein Foundation, the Sacramento History Alliance, the Sacramento Public Library, Sierra Health Foundation, Stonebridge Properties, LLC, and Yellow Cab of Sacramento. Additional support from Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen, Balanced Body, and Patricia Johnson. For more information about the crawl, visit www.sacarchivescrawl.blogspot.com.
