Family Warriors
porcelain, copper, sterling silver, & vitreous enamel
I dedicate this pin to my Pap Pap, Thomas Ramsden (1900 - 1987) World War I army, to my uncle Tommy, Thomas Ramsden II (1922 – 1997) World War II & Vietnam army, and to my Uncle Ricky, Richard Simpson II, (1943 – 2006) Vietnam marines.
My Pap Pap had a quarter of an acre in Washington, Pa for his victory garden. I remember climbing his apple trees, picking fresh strawberries, tomatoes, and grapes in his garden. I loved holding his hand while he described each plant and which ones I could eat.
My Uncle Tommy worked in his glass factory. The kiln at the plant caught fire and he was the one who rescued everyone. His burns were so severe that his nose and ears were burnt off. Uncle Tommy had over twenty operations. He was always the one who laughed the loudest at family gatherings.
My uncle Ricky was 6 feet 7 inches with the bluest eyes. He would pick me up when I was little and swing me around and smile at me with his eyes. I spoke with him last year two weeks before he died. I scanned and emailed him pictures of his family from his youth before his last birthday. He died of cancer from exposure to agent orange.
The pin symbolizes peace with the doves wing, yet the red paint on the backside of the wing reflect the blood shed during war. The silver prongs and twisted silver wire were left sharp and were to look like barbed or razor wire, the copper disk enameled in with opaque black that was left in the kiln too long which revealed a transparent dark blue center representing the earth. The colors are red white and blue.
