Amsterdam Light Festival
Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter.
For our seventh edition, artists from home and abroad take you on a journey along 30 light artworks specially created for Amsterdam. The 53-day exhibition revolves around the theme ‘The Medium is the Message’, the famous statement by the Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan. The role of light in conveying a message and the city of Amsterdam as a medium for telling stories are central to this edition.

PARABOLIC LIGHTCLOUD
Artist: amigo & amigo - Renzo B. Larriviere (1985) & Simone Chua (1987)
In their installation 'Parabolic Lightcloud', Renzo B. Larriviere and Simone Chua (amigo & amigo) use more than 1,000 lights to make something invisible visible: our human emotions.
With different colour combinations, patterns and transitions they show us intense emotions such as love or happiness, but also calmness or sadness. But don’t be fooled, this effect can work just as well the other way around! A digitally-controlled medium, like this light installation, can have a powerful influence on our mood and our actions without us realising it.
The artists based the special shape of 'Parabolic Lightcloud’, the ‘parabola’ (a U-shaped line) on the famous mathematical figure, the Fibonacci spiral. You can, using your imagination, divide this spiral into blocks that become smaller and smaller, each block the same size as the two smaller blocks next to it. Since the spiral is so common in nature – look at the shape of a snail’s shell, or the pattern of seeds in a sunflower, for example – it’s very familiar to us and we often intuitively find objects with similar proportions to be beautiful.
In their homeland Australia, amigo & amigo trace this Fibonacci spiral that forms the basis for 'Parabolic Lightcloud' to the underwater world, in the colourful anemones and corals, for example. The duo often bases their work, and more specifically their light sculptures, on forms found in (human) nature. Recent artworks include two fighting roosters made of light, and an interactive installation inspired by nerve cells and the human brain.

Monastery Simonos Petras
The monastery was founded during the 13th century by Simon the Athonite, who was later sanctified by the Eastern Orthodox Church as Saint Simon the Myrrh-bearer. Tradition holds that Simon, while dwelling in a nearby cave, saw a dream in which the Theotokosinstructed him to build a monastery on top of the rock, promising him that she would protect and provide for him and the monastery. The original monastery was called by Simon "New Bethlehem" (Greek: Νέα Βηθλεέμ) and is to this day dedicated to the Nativity of Jesus.

As part of my project to make a selfie in every park in Amsterdam, I have decided to take this week's 52-Weeks selfie in the Erasmuspark in Amsterdam West.
Location: Erasmuspark in Amsterdam West (Bos en Lommer or De Baarsjes neighbourhood, I'm not sure)
Coordinates: 52°22'34" N 4°51'14" E
Reason: I was on the photo hunt for locations where tram routes will disappear in July when the new metro line (Noord/Zuid line) opens and the Bos en Lommerweg is a street where tramline 14 will disappear and no other tram route will take over this route. A good combination with my idea of 'selfie visiting' all parks in Amsterdam.
Erasmuspark: The Erasmuspark is a city park in Amsterdam-West. The park is located between the Admiralengracht (east side of the park), the Erasmus canal (north), the Mercatorstraat (west) and the Jan van Galenstraat (south). The main entrance is at the Jan van Galenstraat, opposite the Vespuccistraat.
In 1926 the municipality decided to construct a park, which had to be about 12 hectares. It was then still planned between lands. Due to the crisis, in 1927 only 4 hectares were initially constructed with a bridge, the later Desiderius bridge. In 1931 it was still observed that the park looked pretty but somewhat shabby. In 1939 it got its name and, like the Erasmus canal, was named after the famous Dutch humanist writer Desiderius Erasmus (1467-1536). In 2000 there was a major refurbishment and the park was redecorated. A rosarium appeared in the middle of the park. There is also a large playground where you can exercise and which is also used by school children. Furthermore, you can (and may) have a barbecue in the summer.
In the northeast corner is the large statue Orso, a white bear of marble by Simona Vergani.

Strolling by the lake, camera in hand, I hit upon this little fella spitting water instead of fire. Took the shot immediatelly. A similar ''creature'' ''inhabits'' the monastery of Simonos Petras (Agio Oros). For a moment, I felt like having revisited that special place full of warm recollections, so intimate and unique.
