Great Lakes Fleet's Cason J. Callaway arrived in Duluth at noon today with a load of limestone for Hallet #5. GLF's AAA class boats are some of my favorites, so it worked out nicely that I was able to catch the Callaway between appointments and in full sun.

The legend of Saint George

George, a Roman officer, has just crossed Trebizond, a land terrorized by a dragon demanding a daily tribute of young people to devour. As fate would have it, the victim chosen that day is the princess. George joins battle with the beast, runs it through with his lance, and frees her. George, a completely fictitious figure, became the patron saint of knights. Worship of the saint spread, particularly in Europe, after the first Crusades.

This Royal Mint silver coin commemorates the story of St. George and the Dragon. On the reverse of the coin, it is featuring the classic design of St. George on horseback, about to strike the dragon. The coin’s year of issue, weight, metal content and purity. The obverse features a profile rendering of Elizabeth II, also Elizabeth II regal title, as well as the coin’s unique denominational value.

The Royal Life Saving Society Medal, awarded (engraved) to A. McCall, September 1947 when he passed various testing proving proficiency in skills of life saving. This design was used by the Royal Life Saving Society from 1938-1957. The obverse features the society’s logo and motto “Quemcunque Miserum Videris Hominem Scias” latin for “Whomsoever you see in distress, recognize in him a fellow man”. I never met Mr. McCall, but I know his family. As well as a member of the Royal Life Saving Society, he was a paratrooper in the second world war.

1931 San Marino (Republic). Silver 10 Lire Coin

The Most Serene Republic of San Marino (Italian: Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino) is a country situated in the Apennine Mountains. It is a landlocked enclave, completely surrounded by Italy. Its size is just over 60 km2 with an estimated population of almost 30,000. Its capital is the City of San Marino. One of the European microstates along with Liechtenstein, the Vatican, Monaco, Andorra, and Malta, San Marino has the smallest population of all the members of the Council of Europe. The constitution of San Marino, enacted in 1600, is the world’s oldest constitution still in effect.

Early coins, such as this stunning bright silver coin of a lion, lying down looking left, head reverted on the obverse and a classic early Greek design on the reverse featuring quadripartite incuse square with alternating raised and sunken quarters. Pieces such as these are less common compared to most Roman coins. This is a great example with both sides struck very well and centered. The lion on the obverse is extra high relief; with both side having great detail with little wear.

Certified Canadian coins. This one was just slabbed so the plastic casing was pristine and saved me some editing time. As is often the case, one side of the coin photographs well, (shown here). and the other side is quite bland.
