Sterling silver bangle bracelet

My husband bought me this beautiful silver bracelet for Christmas, so as I was spending some time in the studio today I thought I would attempt to photograph it! I don't think I did it justice, photographing metal is tricky!

She is barefoot, dressed as a hippie pixie, and prominently displaying forces of good (Autobot tattoo, Batman watch, etc.). So you might be tempted to take her for a pacifist. But that wouldn't stop her "evil" foot from kicking me across the metro station. I'm kidding of course... if she did stuff me into that tube who would schlep around her Comic Con loot?!?

i'd just like to say i didnt make the flower, i found it in the art room in my school. The random sizes of the petals actually irritate me a bit, to the point of hypervenitlating (i'm a bit OCD and a bit of a perfectionist - not a good mix). It was quite a feat rolling this flower all the way home.

Fairy Tales can be very real. A quarter of a century ago, a Prince rescued me from a tower. It was called Winston Towers and there was an Evil Queen. It had been a charmed life, most of the time, until the Loving King, my protector, passed away. Part of me fell into a deep sleep until the Prince awakened me with his kiss. Yes, I do relate to Snow White, however, I don't know any Dwarfs : )

We are off the boat on the main road along Tonlé Sap Lake in Kampong Louang. We were met by vendors selling silver jewellery. The area is known for its silversmiths.

Another shot of Sarah during day one of Comic Con 2009. Seriously, as long as it is free of precious art, she has no moral objection to turning that poster tube into a lethal weapon.

Sarah searches in vain on my iPhone for a death ray, smoke pellet, or teleportation app. My guess is that offensive weaponry violates Apple's Terms of Service for the App Store. Pity... I can see it now, AppMan's utility belt.

I like this shot, it is a rare chance for me to get a shot of Sarah at the Con where she is interacting with something other than a toy or poster. Also, I'm absolutely a better photographer when I can step back and shoot the action rather than try to direct it.

Bringing my two passions together, I chose to photograph my hand-made silver bracelet this week (shot with my "real" camera instead of my phone)!

This bracelet is a collection of disks made by me from a recycled silver product called PMC3...an organic clay filled with tiny particles of pure silver. I shape and texture the clay to form the disks, sand them when dry and then I fire them all in a kiln for 2 hours at 1600°F. During this heating cycle, the clay burns away and pure silver is left behind. When cooled, I buff the metal pieces by hand, tumble them for an hour in stainless steel shot and I add patina to create a weathered look.

I fabricated the bracelet part by fusing 18 gauge fine silver wire into links. The head pins holding the disks to the bracelet are pieces of 24 gauge silver wire with balled ends (created as I held the wire in the flame of my torch).

And while this explanation may sound a bit dry...sitting at my studio bench creating silver jewelry is "zen" time for me, like meditation for my creative soul.

This woman was walking up Broadway, at 81st Street. I think I could have walked right into her, and knocked her flat on the ground, before she would have noticed me...

Looking back on some old photos from 40-50 years ago, I was struck by how visible the differences were between the culture of then, versus the culture of now. In some cases, it was evident from the things people wore, or carried, or did, back then which they no longer do today. But sometimes it was the opposite: things that didn't exist back in the 1960s and 1970s have become a pervasive part of today's culture.

A good example is the cellphone: 20 years ago, it simply didn't exist. Even ten years ago, it was a relatively uncommon sight, and usually only on major streets of big cities. Today, of course, cell phones are everywhere, and everyone is using them in a variety of culture contexts.

However, I don't think this is a permanent phenomenon; after all, if you think back to the early 1980s, you probably would have seen a lot of people carrying Sony Walkmans, or "boom-box" portable radios -- all of which have disappeared...

If Moore's Law (which basically says that computers double in power every 18 months) holds up for another decade, then we'll have computerized gadgets approximately 100 times smaller, faster, cheaper, and better -- which means far better integration of music, camera, messaging, and phone, but also the possibility of the devices being so tiny that they're embedded into our eyeglasses, our earrings, or a tattoo on our forehead.

So the point of this album is to provide a frame of reference -- so that we can (hopefully) look back 10-20 years from now, and say, "Wasn't it really weird that we behaved in such bizarre ways while we interacted with those primitive devices?"
