The black-backed jackal also known as the Silver-backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) is a medium-sized canine native to eastern and southern Africa.
Black-backed jackals are highly vocal. Best known for their high wailing calls - often given in the early evening, when one individual answers another until an unearthly chorus builds up – they also utter a repeated yapping when tailing a predator; a call that sometimes betrays an irritated lion or leopard.

This handsome Jackal was running in circles around a lone lioness who was still feeding on the nights hunt. This was captured during a Photography safari on an early morning game drive Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya.
Once the Lion's have had there fill they normally just walk away from the carcass and let the scavengers of the savannah take over and clean up the site.
The first on site are always the Jackals as they can be seen running around in circles whilst the Lions are still eating. Next come in the vultures and the Marabou Storks. The Hyena's finally come in and chase everybody away to eat there fill. Once they have left the vultures come back and clean the carcass to the bone leaving and wasting nothing. On some occasions Hyena's are known to chase Lions away from there hunt.

The Black-backed jackal also known as the Silver-backed Jackal (Lupulella mesomelas) is a medium-sized canine native to eastern and southern Africa.
The main characteristic of the black-backed jackal, which gives it its name, is the black hair running from the back of the neck to the tail. The chest is white, and the under parts are white to rusty-white, whereas the rest of the body ranges from reddish brown to ginger in appearance. Adults stand about 38cm at the shoulder and are nearly a meter long in length. The head is dog-like, with a pointed muzzle and high pointed ears.

This Jackal was sleeping very comfortably on a bed of Rhino dung which was fresh and the Jackal was enjoying the warmth on a chilly dull morning.

This image should come with a warning as I could be posting quite a few photos of this species over the next few days - more like 'week of the jackal' rather than 'day of the jackal' as I have so many shots of them. I'll start the series with this photo of a youngster emerging from his den. He was one of five 'pups' in this particular family.

aka. Silver-backed Jackal
The Black-backed Jackal, or Silver-backed Jackal as it is known in places, is one of the hardiest creatures of Africa, surviving in a wide range of habitats from arid desert to Delta.
One of Africa's most amazing sounds is the call of the Black-backed Jackal, usually shattering the air around sunset. Referred to as the Cry of the Kalahari, the call carries across the wilderness, and often a chorus breaks out when other males join in.
The Black-backed Jackal is an opportunistic feeder, often seen around carcasses and kills, and is often observed slipping in and stealing a morsel from a lion kill while the pride is still eating. Although small in comparison to other predators, the Black-backed Jackal is known to stand its ground against other predators such as hyena and leopard.
Compared to other members of the genus Canis, the black-backed jackal is a very ancient species, and has changed little since the Pleistocene, being the most basal wolf-like canine, alongside the closely related side-striped jackal. It is a fox-like animal with a reddish coat and a black saddle that extends from the shoulders to the base of the tail. It is a monogamous animal, whose young may remain with the family to help raise new generations of pups. The black-backed jackal is not a fussy eater, and feeds on small to medium-sized animals, as well as plant matter and human refuse.
A jackal was once observed killing an adult mountain reedbuck on Moloto Route in Pilanesberg National Park.

Easy to see why an alternative English name for this Jackal is Silver-backed. This rather relaxed individual was waiting in the shade for the opportunity to collect scraps from a Cheetah kill.
One of two distinct sub-species, this C. m. mesomelas found in southern Africa: this one photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The second sub-species C. m. schmidti is found in east Africa.

There were six pups/youngsters in this particular family, but for some reason this one had been left behind whilst the others were out with the parents. Sensibly it didn't wander far from the den.
Black-backed Jackal also known as the Silver-backed Jackal are pretty common through out the region and are always seen in pairs.
Although they are known to find and hunt their own food, they are very often found near feeding Lions and Cheetahs and are quick to grab any left overs once they have finished.
This Black-backed jackal was seen in the Masai Mara very close to a pride of feeding Lions and did manage to grab a scrap and run away before the pride members came after him.

Normaly seen in pairs with cubs and very communal family group with lots of interaction amongst the family members.
A carnivore but hardly ever makes a kill, but always found near to Lion prides where it snatches bits and runs away.
