Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season. A visit to Gangtok is really incomplete without paying visits to M. G. Marg, Gangtok, which is a ‘must visit’ place. Gangtok is the town center of the hill town and just like any other important road in a city of India would be named as Mahatma Gandhi Road or MG Road, Gangtok is no exception and hence this place is named as M. G. Marg, Gangtok. Over the years, the road and the area around it has transformed.
The entire road is lined up with numerous glittering shops, restaurants, cafes and bars on both sides. It looks very similar to a shopping mall but out in the open. Locals and tourists take leisure walks or just sit and relax. Many tourists take a table at a roadside restaurant and watch the activities on the street, or relax on one of the benches laid alongside the road. The atmosphere out there is like a carnival. At MG Marg in December, The annual Gangtok Food and Culture Festival is held.
The whole area is smoke-free, litter-free, and devoid of vehicles. For approximately 1 kilometer stretch of the road, vehicles are not allowed as it’s a pedestrian-only zone. There are Victorian lamps along this road. The entire place looks magical, when lit up after dark.

Thansing is one of the most photogenic camp-sites on the Goechala Trek. Mount Pandim (6691 m), a very holy mountain for the Sikkim people and hence never climbed upon, glows a radiant aurum at sundown as the Prekchu river, which originates from the glorious Mount Kanchanjunga and serpentines its way down the valley.

A frozen glacial lake, surrounded by towering peaks and crisp, cold air, blanketed by an azure blue sky - Changu Lake is one of those rare places that dignify the platitude. This glistening, emerald blue water body, fed by the melting snow of the surrounding mountains, is located at the height of 12,400 feet on the Gangtok-Nathula Road. Also known as the Tsomgo Lake, it translates into ‘source of water.’
In winters, the Changu lake is frozen. A blanket of white shrouds the entire region. But in spring the lake turns into a sparkling jewel, its turquoise surface glimmers in the sun. Colours run riot around the lake - the red of Poppies, the blue of Irises, the whites, pinks and purples of Rhododendrons, the dark blues and yellows of Primulas and the whites and blacks of migratory birds. Its distinctive beauty in the two seasons is an experience that’s worth more than one visit to the lake!
Apart from its beauty, the lake also has cultural significance for the local community. In the times gone by, lamas read the waters of the lake to predict the future. When the water had a dark tinge, it foretold of a gloomy future full of unrest. The faith healers of Sikkim also come here during Guru Purnima to offer their prayers.
Changu Lake is not merely a destination or just another lake. It is an experience that you’re sure to cherish and hold close to your heart for a long time to come.

Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586 m) is the third highest mountain in the world, and lies partly in Nepal and partly in Sikkim, India.
Kangchenjunga Main is the highest mountain in India, and the easternmost of the mountains higher than 8,000 m (26,000 ft). It is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks, and has always been worshipped by the people of Darjeeling and Sikkim.
Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world, but calculations based on various readings and measurements made by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849 came to the conclusion that Mount Everest, known as Peak XV at the time, was the highest. Allowing for further verification of all calculations, it was officially announced in 1856 that Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world. - Wikipedia

Chungthang is a small town on way to Yumthang, it stands at the confluence of the rivers Lachen chu and Lachung chu. The North Sikkim highway bifurcates from here with one road leading to Lachen and the other to Lachung. Chungthang valley is considered to be a holy place which has been blessed by Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Sikkim. There is a rock here which to this day bears the hand and footprints of Padmasambhava. From a small opening in the rock there is continuous flow of mineral water. There is a small patch of land here from which grows paddy every year. The nature defying miracle is believed to be the blessing of Guru Padmasambhava who sprinkled a handful of grain on the spot which has sprouted paddy ever since.
Chungthang is a good place to halt before one takes off for the more alpine regions of Lachen, Lachung and the Yumthang Valley. Chungthang is mired in myths and legends, one such being that this is the place from where the word ‘Demazong’ [the hidden valley of rice, as Sikkim is known] first originated.

Place : Orange Court Resort, Aritar, South Sikkim, India
This huge stupa or monument is located at a short walking distance from the Research Institute of Tibetology and on a hillock. Car will drop you at the base from where a short but steep uphill pathway leads to the stupa. The Chorten Stupa is marked by a golden top dome. This golden top can be seen from various places in Gangtok.
It is believed that this entire place was once haunted by evil spirits and many people who wandered around this place became victims and died. Later a very respected and celebrated lama of Tibet Trulshig Rinpoche who followed Nyingma Order of Buddhism came to this place for hermitage. He built this stupa in 1946 to drive away the spirits. The deity enshrined on top of the chorten stupa is known as Dorjee Phurpa or Vajra Kilaya. This chorten is regarded as one of the most important chortens of Sikkim.
The stupa is surrounded by 108 prayer wheels all of which have mantras inscribed on them in Tibetan. If you rotate the prayer wheels, do it in clockwise direction. Inside the Chorten Stupa are Kanjur holy books, relics, complete mantras and several other religious objects. There are several other small stupas around the main one. One of them is Jhang Chup Chorten which was built in memory of Trulshig Rinpoche after his death.
Following demise of Trulshig Rinpoche, another celebrated lama Dodhrubchen Rinpoche came here and established his dharma preaching center in the same premises. The building can accommodate about 700 monks. You too can also enter and offer your prayers there.
There is no admission fee. However donations are accepted.
How to reach
Chorten Stupa is covered under all standard local packaged tours offered by the taxi drivers. It's only 2kms from Gangtok Town in Deorali area. You can other wise just take a taxi and reach here in 10-15 minutes. Within short walking distance is Institute of Tibetology.
