I love that it has faded and chipped areas from the rain and snow hitting it though the years." When SL Green began knocking down a full block of prewar commercial buildings next to Grand Central Terminal last year to make way for its new 1,401-foot-tall office tower at One Vanderbilt Avenue it revealed this #vintage #sign for Sozodont, a popular brand of oral hygiene 😁product from the mid nineteenth-century. Sozodont was created in 1859 and its was chosen from the #Greek word "sozo", meaning to save, and "dontia", meaning teeth. We love its statement "Cleans Teeth Clean- Our Only Claim". In honor of #memorialday 🇺🇸 yesterday we are posting our photo of the former Navy Yard Cocktail Lounge ⚓️ in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. This #divebar was in business from 1907 to 2010. Steve Frankel, who owned the business since 1999, lost his lease when the building was sold to a developer. The #cocktail 🍸lounge originally served the tens of thousands of Brooklyn Navy Yard personnel who worked in the shipbuilding industry,and later catered to the workers in the many industrial businesses and film and television studios, which have rented spaces at the revitalized Navy Yard industrial park. Loft's Candies #vintage #neonsign with block and #script metal channel lettering uncovered on Nassau Street in the Financial District. Hidden underneath a vinyl awning for years, this #neon beauty was recently uncovered when the #storefront was leased by Two Boots Pizza @twobootspizza who hired our friend @steveespopowers to create a new #sign for the store. Instead of just removing the #signage, the good news is that Two Boots will be restoring the sign! @steveespopowers convinced them to restore it with the help of @lettherebeneon. We love when we hear that a new tenant appreciates the history of a store and its signage. Joe's Tavern In Chelsea has not been open in over 20 years but we love that this #vintage #neonsign has survived. It is surprising because this part of western Chelsea near the High Line has become very gentrified and many old buildings like this one have met the wrecking ball to become expensive glass condos. Claremont Liquors in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx had a wonderful ‪#‎vintage‬ ‪#‎neonsign‬ as well as ‪#‎handpainted‬ ‪#‎signage‬ in the window. We loved how the "Q" was made into a ‪#‎clock‬. Although the ‪#‎liquor‬ store is still in business, the owners modernized and replaced the ‪#‎neon‬ ‪#‎sign‬ with a plastic awning a few years ago. Broad & Market Streets in the heart of downtown became the focal point of #Newark after its establishment in 1666. The city of Newark expanded around the intersection and by the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this "Four Corners" became Newark's modern business district where its first skyscraper was built by the Fireman's Insurance Company.
