Devetashka - the Bulgarian Cave with 70,000 Years of Human Habitation

Devetashka cave is an enormous cave in Bulgaria, which has provided shelter for groups of humans since the late Paleolithic era, and continuously for tens of thousands of years since then. Now abandoned by humans, it remains a site of national and international significance and is home to some 30,000 bats.

Devetashka cave, which is known as Devetàshka peshterà in Bulgaria, is located roughly 18 kilometres north of Lovech, near the village of Devetaki. It is a karst cave formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks and characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage systems.

The cave itself is immense, measuring approximately 2 kilometres in length and with a huge entrance ‘hall’ measuring 60 metres in height. In places the ceiling is 100 metres above the ground and there are seven huge holes through which daylight illuminates the vast interior. It is these holes that earned the cave the name Maarata or Oknata ("the eyes").

About 200 meters from the entrance, the cave separates into two branches. On the left side, a small river runs along it, forming miniature lakes and waterfalls, passing through the main hall and eventually flowing into the Osam River. The right side is warm and dry and contains several chambers, ending with a round hall, known as the Altar. Beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, rivulets, majestic natural domes and arches can be found within the enormous cave and one can see why various human populations would have chosen Devetashka as their home.

Devetashka Cave was rediscovered by a Bulgarian scientist in 1921 but was not fully excavated until the 1950s when the intention was to transform the cave into a giant warehouse. Studies revealed that it has been inhabited almost continuously since the late Paleolithic era. The earliest traces of human presence date back to the middle of the Early Stone Age around 70,000 years ago. The Devetashka cave also contained one of the richest sources of cultural artifacts from the Neolithic (6th millennium - 4th millennium B C).

In June, 1996, Devetashka Cave was declared a natural landmark. The cave is probably best known for its part in the action movie ‘The Expendables 2’, filmed in 2011, in which Sylvester Stallone crash lands a plane into Jean Claude Van Damme’s subterranean lair.

The quiet beauty of a pond or lake is instantly enhanced by a water lily's rounded leaves and starry flowers floating placidly on the surface. These unique aquatic plants can bloom in a range of colors anytime from late spring through fall in most regions of the country. Their leaves can be cup-shaped, star-shaped, and smooth or jagged. And while water lilies may be most visible on the surface of still freshwater, they are rooted in the mud below, where they overwinter and regrow the following year. Here are a few more interesting facts about these amazing flowers that will likely surprise you.

1. There Are Many Water Lily Colors

When you imagine a water lily, you probably think of the classic white bloom bursting from a deep green lily pad. But water lilies actually grow in a rainbow of colors, including pink, red, orange, yellow, purple, and blue. Tropical varieties take on jewel tones (purple, orange, bright blue, and yellow), whereas hardier varieties lean toward a pastel palette. Sometimes the blossoms on hardy varieties change shades as they age. Even the leaf colors vary from deep green to rich burgundy. Water lilies aren't just a one-trick pretty pony; they have more tricks up their sleeves.

2. Water Lilies Help Their Environment

Although they're primarily known for their stunning appearance, water lilies are actually important players in the aquatic ecosystem. These plants are found in shallow and still fresh water, as in ponds, lakes, and the edges of slow-moving streams. Because they rest on the water's surface, the flowers and pads provide shade, keeping the water cooler and preventing algae that thrives in heat from growing in excess. Water lilies also shelter fish from predatory birds and the heat of the sun.

3. The Water Lily Is July's Birth Flower

Attention July birthdays: Water lily is your flower. (Along with larkspur.) It's no wonder these bright blooms are linked to July, because they're mainly a summer flower. Water lilies bloom from May through September, putting July smack in the middle of prime season. In frost-free regions, water lilies bloom year-round. But you have to be lucky to catch a bloom, as each individual flower lasts for about four days before sinking under the water to decompose. The beauty is short-lived, but that makes it even more special.

4. The Water Lily Has Numerous Varieties

Each variety of these stunners (there are over 50 species) is unique, whether it's the shape, size, color, fragrance, or blooming pattern. Water lilies inhabit ponds, lakes, and streams all over the world. The largest variety is fittingly called the giant water lily. Other names for this huge flower are the Amazon water lily and the royal water lily. This massive, magnificent flower can grow to a diameter of three to six feet and can support 66 pounds of weight. That means a young child could perch on a giant pad, no problem.

5. The Water Lily Is an Important Spiritual Symbol

Water lilies mean many things in different areas of the world, but they have special significance in Buddhism and Hinduism. For these religions, the water lily symbolizes resurrection, because these flowers close up at night and reopen in the morning, similar to a spiritual rebirth. Buddhists also believe that the water lily represents enlightenment because a beautiful bloom emerges from the dark mud.

6. The Water Lily Is a Star in the Art World

The impressionist painter Claude Monet often used water lilies as a subject. In fact, he painted more than 250 pieces that featured this aquatic plant, and several of them are among his most famous works of art.

"Take a Greek temple, incorporate it entirely in a Christian building, to which are subsequently added the modifications and reconstruction of the building for Christian worship used by the Normans, among others, the facade demolished by the great earthquake of 1693. Without discouraging you you get back to work and, changing completely direction, replace the old facade with a delightful baroque composition from around 1728-54. And everything, deteriorated as it is, continues to live and smile, spreading its image throughout the world as if it had been designed by a Leonardo or a Michelangelo "»

(Lawrence Durrell speaks of the Cathedral of Syracuse)

The Cathedral of the Nativity of Maria Santissima rises on the elevated part of the island of Ortigia, incorporating what was the main Doric style sacred temple of the polis of Syrakousai, dedicated to Athena (Minerva) and converted into a church with the advent of Christianity.

Considered the most important church in the city of Syracuse, it has become part of the assets protected by UNESCO as a world heritage site. Its style is mainly baroque and rococo on the outside, while inside it alternates parts dating back to the Siceliot era, since they belong to the Greek temple and parts dating back to the medieval era, built by the Normans and thus left to the present day. Its internal structure is composed of several naves and chapels, which have a classic and decorated style, typical of the Baroque too.

Of great religious significance, it houses statues, relics and remains of saints, martyrs and noblemen from Syracuse. Its furnishings have seen the succession of artists from many parts of Italy and from abroad. Always a symbol of Syracusan religiosity, the cathedral went through the various historical and cultural phases of the city.

Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period located in present-day Mexico. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Palenque, Chichén, and Calakmul in Mexico, Caracol and Xunantunich in Belize, and Tikal in Guatemala. It is located in the Puuc region of the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, and is considered one of the Maya cities most representative of the region's dominant architectural style. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its significance.

A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. 56117

Colmer’s Hill is an iconic part of the West Dorset landscape and one of the most recognisable places around. This hill, sitting at 417 feet high, perches above the village of Symondsbury on the edge of Bridport.

Colmers Hill’s significance extends back into the 1600’s where it was long called the Colmers Tenement in the Lord of the Manor’s Court Rolls. In about 1650, Elizabeth Lush, the daughter of John Colmer, was the tenant. This is where Colmers Hill got its name from. Two hundred years later in the 1800’s a vicar of the same family name, Rev. John Colmer, was the new tenant. The hill then became ‘Colmers’ again after two hundred years.

The scenic mountain range runs over 600 km in central Australia. The MacDonnell Ranges, a mountain range and an interim Australian bioregion, is located in the Northern Territory and has an area of 3,929,444 hectares. The range is a 644 km long series of mountains in central Australia, consisting of parallel ridges running to the east and west of Alice Springs. The mountain range contains many spectacular gaps and gorges as well as areas of Aboriginal significance. 300-350 million years ago a mountain building event created the MacDonnell Ranges. Since that time, folding, faulting and erosion have shaped the range and created numerous gaps and gorges. The ranges are composed of many rock types, but are most famous for their red quartzite peaks and gorges.

Simpsons Gap is one of the gaps in the West MacDonnell Ranges in Australia's Northern Territory. It is located 18 kilometres west from Alice Springs, on the Larapinta Trail. The gap is home to various plants and wildlife, including the black-footed rock-wallaby. It is the site of a permanent waterhole. The area is an important spiritual place for the Arrernte people, who have inhabited the Arrernte area since before European discovery. Simpsons Gap is known to the Arrernte as "Rungutjirpa". It was later visited by surveyor Gilbert Rotherdale McMinn in 1871 while he was searching for a better route for the Overland Telegraph Line. 16188

Having ranted and raved annually over the past several years about the decreasing significance of this "celebration" even in the face of the increasing significance of its purpose, I thought I would post this futuristic view of what the Earth will look like for the generations that follow us. In fact, it looks very much like parts of China today, no?

I am not an optimist about humanity's ability to stem the tide(s) it has created because of our history of never addressing a problem before it's too late. Certainly that has never been truer than as it relates to our environment, and in the 45 years that has passed since the creation of this day by Senator Gaylord Nelson of my home state of Wisconsin, it has only become worse...ironically with the United States the most obvious of those few avoiding the responsibility and initiative to do anything about anything. One might assume that increasing scientific understanding would create the recognition that we are in a literal self destruct mode and a somewhat desperate reaction to correct it would be evident. But no. Clearly the monied interests are even more in control than ever and will be the parties that oversee our destiny. Cause for optimism indeed. We continue on our historic path of being the first species ever to cause its own extinction...fair retribution, methinks, given the number we carelessly continue to annihilate on a daily basis.

So Happy Earth Day. It should be our most important celebration

...for without it, there wouldn't be cause for many others, would there....

The significance of the elaborate "bill-fencing" ritual of gannets, when one partner returns to the other at the nest, is poorly understood. Its purpose may be either to strengthen the pair bond or to indicate the location of a food source. From a slide.

Lonely trees seem to say a great deal. I can associate it with us as individuals. Strong and alone in the world, yet strong and accepting of relationship and true bonding.

So many things can be read from the solitary tree.

Nizwa fort was built in the 1668 AD by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Ya'rubi. It is Oman's most visited national monument. The fort was the administrative seat of authority for the presiding Imams and Walis in times of peace and conflict. The main bulk of the fort took about 12 years to complete and was built above an underground stream. The fort is a reminder of the town's significance through turbulent periods in Oman's long history.

Chivirico, 75km southwest of Santiago de Cuba and 106km east of Marea del Portillo, is the only town of any significance on the enticing south-coast highway, a roller-coaster of plummeting mountains, crinkled bays and crashing surf that makes up one of Cuba's loveliest road trips and at it end is home of my favorite Caribbean resort Brisas Sierra Mar .

Cuba is one of my favorite places to vacation in the winter it offers great beaches, weather, drinks, amazing people, very few Covidiots and sublime sunsets.

Cubans have done so much with so little for so long that I am sure they are faring well through this mess most likely missing the extra tourist dollars but nobody is hungry and their healthcare system is top notch.

Castel del Monte - UNESCO world Hermitage site

When the Emperor Frederick II built this castle near Bari in the 13th century, he imbued it with symbolic significance, as reflected in the location, the mathematical and astronomical precision of the layout and the perfectly regular shape. A unique piece of medieval military architecture, Castel del Monte is a successful blend of elements from classical antiquity, the Islamic Orient and north European Cistercian Gothic.

“The significance of the cherry blossom tree in Japanese culture goes back hundreds of years. In their country, the cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It’s a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short.”

The Expiatory Church of the Sagrada Familia, known simply as the Sagrada Familia, is a Roman Catholic basilica in Barcelona, Spain, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí. Begun in 1882, it is still under construction (November 2016). It is Gaudí's masterpiece and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernist architecture.

The Sagrada Familia is a reflection of Gaudí's artistic plenitude: he worked on it for most of his professional career, but especially in his later years, where he reached the culmination of his naturalistic style, synthesizing all the solutions and styles he had tried up to that point. Gaudí achieved perfect harmony in the interrelationship between structural and ornamental elements, between plasticity and aesthetics, between function and form, between content and container, achieving the integration of all the arts into a structured and logical whole. The Sagrada Familia has a Latin cross plan, five central naves, a three-aisled transept, and an apse with seven chapels. It boasts three façades dedicated to the Birth, Passion, and Glory of Jesus. When completed, it will have 18 towers: four at each portal, making a total of twelve for the apostles, four over the transept invoking the evangelists, one over the apse dedicated to the Virgin, and the central dome tower in honor of Jesus, which will reach 172.5 meters in height. The temple will have two sacristies next to the apse and three large chapels: the Assumption Chapel in the apse and the Baptism and Penance Chapels next to the main façade. It will also be surrounded by a cloister designed for processions and to isolate the temple from the exterior. Gaudí applied a highly symbolic content to the Sagrada Familia, both in architecture and sculpture, dedicating each part of the temple to a religious significance.

Originally, this was a somewhat uninteresting close-up mobile photo of an old metal scale taken during the winter in Arizona.

Using GIMP, the image was converted to B&W and processed with an illusion map and then a displacement map to add distortion.

Subsequently, in Darktable, a light grain was added and the contrast was bumped to finish the "Weighed Significance" of the image. Happy Slider Sunday!

Pelicans are a genus of large water birds that make up the family Pelecanidae. They are characterised by a long beak and a large throat pouch used for catching prey and draining water from the scooped-up contents before swallowing. They have predominantly pale plumage, the exceptions being the brown and Peruvian pelicans. The bills, pouches, and bare facial skin of all species become brightly coloured before the breeding season. The eight living pelican species have a patchy global distribution, ranging latitudinally from the tropics to the temperate zone, though they are absent from interior South America and from polar regions and the open ocean. Pelicans frequent inland and coastal waters, where they feed principally on fish, catching them at or near the water surface. They are gregarious birds, travelling in flocks, hunting cooperatively, and breeding colonially. Four white-plumaged species tend to nest on the ground, and four brown or grey-plumaged species nest mainly in trees. The relationship between pelicans and people has often been contentious. The birds have been persecuted because of their perceived competition with commercial and recreational fishing. Their populations have fallen through habitat destruction, disturbance, and environmental pollution, and three species are of conservation concern. They also have a long history of cultural significance in mythology, and in Christian and heraldic iconography. 54324
