I’m often undecided on whether a scene will look better with direct light, or later with supposedly better atmospheric color. This particular scene loses sun 2 hours before sunset this time of year, so I snapped this just before the sun dipped below a nearby ridge. I wish it was closer to golden hour, but I’m happy with the definition the direct light puts on the various contours of the landscape. I wasn’t confident in the sunset colors happening, which turned out to be a good hunch. I guess I’ll go back and try some other time. . .

This is a panorama of Lone Pine Peak on the left and Mount Whitney to the right. The Alabama Hills are in the foreground. I've been to the top of Mount Whitney in my youth. It's a rough climb!

Engine of Sierra #3 - the "Movie Star Locomotive"! The train is over 100 years old and been in more TV and movies than any other. Most people don't get this view, but Mary made friends with the docents.

The Little Lakes Valley trail at the end of Rock Creek Road is aa great hike for those who want a taste of the high Sierra without having to work to get there. The trail starts at Mosquito Flat, elevation 10,250 ft and continues along a chain of beautiful small lakes, with only moderate elevation gains in between. This is Marsh Lake, the second lake.

I tried some new techniques for processing high contrast images here and am quite pleased with the results. Thank you Michael Frye!

Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

Beautiful cascade in the Ansel adam wilderness. We just sat here for a good hour in awe despite mosquitoes sucking our blood. They were really bad, Oh well who cares when you have such pretty sight infront of you.

This is one of the best sunset scenes in the Big Bend National Park. Never get tired of watching it and of taking photographs.

This is the area I chose for my first Sierra backpacking experience. This view is just one of the rewards attained after hiking about 3.5 miles from the trailhead located at the parking lot next to Saddlebag Lake, which is about 2 miles from Yosemite National Park’s eastern boundary.

I posted a similar shot back in 2009; however this is a slightly wider version, and one that I processed using my current post-process workflow. As mentioned in previous posts, my current workflow concentrates on optimizing white-balance, for accuracy and of course for my own output style.

For a sense of scale, look closely just to the right of center where a small tent is visible with even smaller reflection.

So, VersaEmerge had some technical difficulties at their SXSW Purevolume show. Blake's 9 volt battery died, and no one had another one.

Kinda funny how you can't play an electric/acoustic without a battery.

But since no one had another battery available, they just decided to get down to our level, and play a zero electricity involved song, in the crowd, less than a foot away from me.

:))))

Thank you VersaEmerge, for giving me one of the best concert experiences in a long time.

A magnificent Golden Eagle, the most widely distributed species of eagle, seen in the Sierra Morena. Like all eagles, it belongs to the family Accipitridae. They are one of the best-known birds of prey in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Sierra Morena is one of the main systems of mountain ranges in Spain. It stretches for 450 kilometres from east to west across the south of the Iberian Peninsula.

Una preciosa panóramica y un lugar espectacular,,,,,,,,

Un detalle para mi amigo Adolfo, (Sierpe),

Just another lovely quiet scene from the John Muir wilderness of California. We backpacked up here and stayed for several nights in this incredible location overlooking this idyllic lake.

Fall in the Sierra Nevada's.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains are an impressive sight from the east side. This shot was taken from a short hike from the Whitney Portal Road. Lone Pine Peak is the 12,944 foot mountain on the left that looks like the tallest; that is a perspective illusion. Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48, is 14,505 feet. It is in the middle of the image.

We went to see an Ansel Adams exhibit a couple days ago and I was intrigued by his use of black skies. I can see I need a lot more practice in processing black and white images!
