This magnificent cathedral was constructed in the 13th century while Siena was competing with Florence for dominance over Tuscany. Though Florence's duomo is somewhat larger, it can't compare to the beauty of this one which is packed inside and out with paintings, sculptures and mosaics by dozens of the greatest artists of that period, including Luigi Mussini, Donatello, Buoninsegna, Giovanni, Vecchietta, Bartolo and Peruzzi among others. The cathedral floor comprises 56 inlaid marble mosaic panels depicting old testament allegories and virtues… the floor alone is worth a prolonged visit here. I consider this church to be the most beautiful in Europe.

although Siena, Italy is beautiful in her normal semi-monotonal siena brown color, she attains a special charm when all color is stripped out…

The Gothic cathedral of Siena - Duomo di Siena (though the dome is a later addition, designed by Baroque architect Bernini). It was began in 1196 - replacing an older church, consecrated sometime before or in 1215 (when daily mass was being held at the church), and finished in 1348.

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to actually go in - we still had a long way to go that day, and Siena was just a pit stop...

Cityscape of Siena

Siena is in the heart of Tuscany. I was lucky enough to take this photo during the blue hour on a beautiful evening in September. The famous horse race takes place at the Piazza del Campo near the town hall. The historic old town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Torre del Mangia the one thing you can see from every corner of Siena leading all to the Piazza del Campo the town square, a round shell shaped space created by a Roman forum that held back the city until its destruction. Siena was a Roman backwater and didn’t find prosperity until the Lombards conquered the area in the 5th century followed by Charlemagne in the 8th then finding its own footing as a Republic from the 12th until the late 16th century. Siena is fragmented into 17 contrade (wards) each of these wards from medieval times were battalions that provided city defenses while they no longer provide protection they do compete annually for the bragging rights of the Paleo a biannual horse race through the city and around Piazza del Campo.

I took this on May 21, 2009 with my D70s and Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Lens at 60mm, 1/320s, f9 ISO 200 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia ,Topaz, and DXO Nik
