I haven't had as much time for photography or Flickr as I would have liked the past two months or so. I have been working on a little project in our back yard, trying to catch moths on the wing as they visit our cleome flowers. Every night just after darkness falls perhaps 15 or 20 of these moths visit the cleome. It seems the flowers open up more as it darkens. I have been pre-focusing at a short distance and using an F-stop of 22 or 32 to try and get them in action. With my flash set at 1/8th power, to keep the flash duration as short as possible, I just blast away in the hopes I will get one in focus. Somewhat frustrating, but fun too. These two are the best I have to show for about 400 shots at the quick little buggers. A very knowledgeable and generous Flickr user, willapalens, has helped me ID these as cabbage moths. With over 350 varieties of moth in many folks' own back yard, IDs can be challenging to say the least. So much to learn.....so little time.

This piece of driftwood reminded me of a snake moving along the beach sands.

Summer 2018

This week I posted a few words about being comfortable shooting “nothing” in the post “A little faded and not so perfect anymore” receiving some questions about what my “typical” day looks like when I am out walking the city and shooting, the length of time I might shoot, what I find worthy and interesting and how often I might shoot. And so as a follow-up to that post, I thought I would share with you visually what an afternoon looks like when I am out and about searching for “nothing”.

Mojave National Preserve

San Bernardino County, CA

I had received a call that there was a rattlesnake in the road. So I brought my trashcan, and snake hook and put it in the can.

I carried the trashcan a few hundred yds away from the road into the sandy wash. I released it & then took some pictures of it. It was not in a hurry to go anywhere at all, probably still chilled from the early morning.

On Wednesday I met up with flickr friend Aaron Yeoman for a photo walk, the weather was pretty dire so we stuck to indoor locations… mainly the underground.

We also visited a car park just off Bond Street to photograph this stairwell, we stood at the very bottom to take this and the space to operate in was very limited and composition was tough to say the least.

I was unsure whether or not to go for a weird angle or to go for straight lines… as you’ve probably guessed by now I don’t do weird angles, not because I don’t like them but they never seem to work the way I’d like them too.

It was great meeting you Aaron :-)

Hopefully you’ve all had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend, whatever you’re up to have a good one ;-)

Last night I drove to Twistleton Scar located in the Yorkshire Dales hoping to do some star trails on the limestone pavement. When I arrived there wasn't a cloud in sight but by the time i'd hiked up to the limestone conditions were't so great. A huge patch of cloud arrived and decided to hover over me for the rest of the evening. Determined to come with something after travelling all that way I decided to take some shots to use as a foreground layer in a shot of the milky way thad i'd took in Germany earlier this year
