Yeah, I don't want to wander to far away without this one. It is a needed thing on my everydays outside the house.

Happy Macro Mondays

Used sublingual morphine syringes. In the past I imagined that, for someone in hospice, taking morphine would, in addition to reducing pain and alleviating shortness of breath, also give a 'high'. Not so. Morphine addresses those symptoms, and, in general, 'takes the edge off', but there is no drug high. And, as with all drugs, there are numerous side effects. Requires a constant process of assessing the benefits, vs. the side effects, of increasing or decreasing the dosage.

10.26.07 - For the 365 Days Project.

Where to begin. If I had each symptom individually, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. But collectively, I had one of the biggest scares of my life.

Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pains near heart area, slightly clammy, numbness running down my left arm. History of heart disease in the family. Each of these had a rational explanation not connected to a heart attack. The night before I did some push-ups and slightly over did it. That could explain the chest pains, cramping and muscle spasms around my heart area. I had a double mocha with a new prescription medication I'm taking and that might explain my racing heart beat and palpitations. I power walked up several flights of stairs on the way to work which could be the reason for my shortness of breath and clamminess. Thinking back, I might have even had a slight asthma attack which would explain my continued shortness of breath. It was a bit cold this morning and the power walk up the stairs from the underground BART train station into colder air could have triggered it. The push ups were probably also the cause of the spasms and cramping in my left shoulder, which in turn could possibly be responsible for the numbness in my left arm.

After about a half hour of feeling some of these symptoms this morning, I started getting a bit concerned. I called a couple of local urgent care facilities, but they were all booked up. I started thinking about my uncle who died of a heart attack when my cousins were still kids. It was very hard on our entire family, especially for my cousins. I then started to think about my little boy who's not even two years old yet. About 15-20 minutes later when my left arm started feeling numb, I finally asked my manager to call 9-1-1. I felt silly, I felt embarrassed, but I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. In the end, all of my test results came back fine and the emergency room doctor finally discharged me.

I'm definitely glad I didn't have a heart attack, but in some ways I'm glad this incident occurred. It's put enough of a scare in me and made me realize that I need to make some significant changes in my life now rather than later.
