Seahorses are very hard to find. They like to tuck into places, they don't move much and they use camouflage very well. Except for this one, which was just swimming across a huge patch of open sand. This is probably the least likely habitat that you would except to find one. And yet there it was!

Mantis shrimps, or stomatopods, are marine crustaceans of the order Stomatopoda. Some species have specialised calcified "clubs" that can strike with great power, while others have sharp forelimbs used to capture prey. They branched from other members of the class Malacostraca around 340 million years ago. Mantis shrimps typically grow to around 10 cm (3.9 in) in length. A few can reach up to 38 cm (15 in). The largest mantis shrimp ever caught had a length of 46 cm (18 in); it was caught in the Indian River near Fort Pierce, Florida, in the United States. A mantis shrimp's carapace (the bony, thick shell that covers crustaceans and some other species) covers only the rear part of the head and the first four segments of the thorax. Varieties range in color from shades of brown to vivid colors, with more than 450 species of mantis shrimps being known. They are among the most important predators in many shallow, tropical and subtropical marine habitats. However, despite being common, they are poorly understood, as many species spend most of their lives tucked away in burrows and holes.
Called "sea locusts" by ancient Assyrians, "prawn killers" in Australia, and now sometimes referred to as "thumb splitters"—because of the animal's ability to inflict painful gashes if handled incautiously[7]—mantis shrimps have powerful claws that are used to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning, or dismembering.

Slightly more rare in my experience these are quite small fish. I pursued this fish for 5 minutes then gave him a break. Lovely colors. I think of this as the Zispepo fish now!

I had a lot of fun with this soft coral fish. I was toward the back end of my only dive for that day, and noted a very small movemetn in the fronds of this flower pot coral. Through patience and persistence I was able to use my 105mm with my 2.0 teleconverter to get some nice close shots. This fish was in Brownian motion (ceaseless random motion) across the soft coral. I don't think you could use a super macro converter or a magnifier to get these shots since the subject is very dynamic...

Haddon’s Sea Anemone
This school of anemone fish was living on a Haddon’s Sea Anemone. Usually this arrangement with Haddon’s makes the fish lighter in color. A conical shell was right next to their anemone. The anemone fish attached all their eggs to it. If you zoom in on this photo (flic.kr/p/29F64B9) you can see algae growing on the eggs. The parents (breeding pair) were cleaning the eggs constantly with their mouths.

Seen around 60 feet as we transited the fisherman/shark hangout area of the reef. At first i thought this was a Greasy Reefcod, but its size was immense! When i looked at the photos it is clearly not the same grouper. It spent all its time in the rocks and retreating back deeper. I liked this shot best sincethe shadowing of the mouth and luminance on the eye make it looks menacing, but it was a very cautious fish in reality. The lines of the body folded on itself also lend a dynamic effect to the picture.

Beaded Sea Anemones (Heteractis aurora) are a fairly common species in Okinwa. The two banded anemone fish (Amphiprion bicinctus) are also common. They are enticing to take photos of, but can yeild mixed results. This photo is somewhat satisfying with nice detail on both the fish and the anemone.

Had an extraordinary dive yesterday. Manta rays are common in Hawaii, but the normal daytime encounter shorediving is a "flyby", leaving little chance to interact or photograph. I've huffed through a tank of air pretty quickly trying to keep pace with a manta and get a pic or two.
Yesterday was a different story. I'm alone, 10 minutes into the dive, and here comes one manta, and then another. Breaking with their normal behavior patterns, they simply stuck around and played with me for 40 minutes - barrel rolling, circling, charging me simultaneously from opposite directions...on and on, 'til I ran out of air. Surfaced with a big smile on my face. All is right with the world on days like this...
