What a shame this cover doesn't have a named designer as I rather enjoy the simplicity of this - as it shows the vessel under night skies this route BR sold this 2100 departure from London Waterloo and a subsequent 2315 departure ftom Southampton as the 'leisurely' way to reach northern France and Paris with an arrival at Gare St Lazare at 0920. The vessel used was the purpose built TSS Normannia, constructed for the BTC by William Denny on Clydebank and entering service in 1952. She was withdrawn from service in 1978 and broken up in Spain that year. The Le Havre ferry service from Southampton, latterly run by other operators, appears to have been withdrawn and transferred to Portsmouth in 1984 with no direct rail connections.

A pocket folder timetable, with obvious design similarities to contemporary British Railways examples, for the 'drive on - drive off' ferry services operated by the Caledonian Steam Packet Company Ltd in summer 1962 that served the various Firth of Clyde routes they operated. These were Gourock to Dunoon, Wemyss Bay and Rothesay, Fairlie Pier and Brodick and Ardrossan and Brodick.

The CSP was originally formed in 1889 by the Caledonian Railway at a time of great railway and associated ferry service expansion in the Firth of Clyde and at other places on the Scottish West Coast. The company, along with its 'parent' was Grouped into the LMSR in 1923 and so was nationalised in 1948 becoming part of the Clyde Shipping Services of the British Transport Commission, the BTC having extensive maritime and port responsibilities. The CSP name was revived in 1957 and continued until eventual merger with the McBraynes company in 1973 following transfer of the CSP to the Scottish Transport Group in 1968.

The folder shows maps of the routes, the timetables, fares and some of the services available on board - well I recall the ferries with their lounge, tearoom and smokeroom bar services! The shift to drive on - drive off was a major change in ferry operations requiring vessels and piers capable of this method rather than the older type of ferries were vehicles had to be craned on or off.

A rather lavish brochure and map, intended I suspect for foreign visitors arriving from the Continent, and issued by British Railways Southern Region in 1963. It describes the various railway ferry routes and main line train services. The brochure appears in various European languages including German, English, Italian and as here in Dutch. The contents give details of Continental agents, shipping services to the UK, train services, distances and fares and ancilliary information such as for London Transport's tourist tickets.

The background to the map inside is of the network is printed in gold ink and the cover, using gold for the lion and red for the unicorn, is by John Bainbridge (1919 - 1978), is a bold representation of the Lion and the Unicorn from the Royal Arms.

Undated and with a design sadly unattributed this appears to be the 1960/61 issue given the print code. The contemporary feel to the design includes this composite collage use of photography and graphics on a black background. It sells the idea that the crossing itself, some of lenghty duration, could be made part of the holiday experience.

"It's all so easy by modern "drive-on, drive-off"Car Ferry" says the introduction to the 1963 British Railways Continental and Channel Island car ferry booklet. A reminder of both pre-Channel Tunnel days as well as when the Railway was one of the biggest shipping and ferry owners operating in British waters. This substantial booklet gives information as services, times and destinations as well as the customs and insurance requirements for taking your vehicles, and yourselves, "abroad".

The services shown were operated by both Eastern Region, from Harwich to Hook of Holland, and the Southern Region's various services from Dover, Newhaven, Southampton and Weymouth. The cover is unattributed but is similar to other issues at the time and owes something to some of the Lander covers to these booklets. It uses the old UK road signs black and white striped post to good effect.
