The shikra (Accipiter badius) is a small bird of prey in the family Accipitridae found widely distributed in Asia and Africa where it is also called the little banded goshawk.

The shikra was a favourite among falconers in India and Pakistan due to the ease with it could be trained and was frequently used to procure food for the more prized falcons. They were noted for their pluck and ability to take much larger birds including partrigdes, crows and even young peafowl. The word shikra or shikara means hunter in the Hindi language (the male was called chipak or chipka based on call The word Shikra is borrowed from the Urdu word (شِـكْـره) which is derived from the word shikari (شِكارى) meaning hunter. Hunting in Persian and Turkish is referred to as shikar (شِـكار), and in Arabic the hunt master in the Mamlook Era was known as Ameer Shikar (أمير شِـكار). The word Shikari may also be used in English in the sense of "hunter". In "The return of Sherlock Holmes" by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes says: "I wonder that my very simple stratagem could deceive so old a shikari"

india incredible....Nainital is a Himalayan resort town in the Kumaon region of India’s Uttarakhand state, at an elevation of roughly 2,000m. Formerly a British hill station, it’s set around Nainital Lake, a popular boating site with Naina Devi Hindu Temple on its north shore. The beautiful lake resort town nestles amidst seven hills in a lush valley at an altitude of 1938 meters. In 1841, the British first discovered Nainital as a holiday resort. Today, the town has emerged as one of the most important hill resorts of India

"Naini" is derived from the temple of goddess Naini which was built on the bank of the lake but later got destroyed due to land slides in the year 1880, The place is mentioned in Skand Puran as 'Trishul Sarover'. Tri Rishi (three sages Atri, Pulastiya and Pulha) had come there for pilgrimage while they were at Gagar range, they felt thirsty and could not find any water. They thought of Mansarover and dug a hole which at once got filled with water.

The boats are called shikaras and resemble the wooden boat found on Dal Lake of Srinagar, India.

Weeding The Dal Lake Srinagar.

Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir.

At Dal lake, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India.

The shikara is a type of wooden boat found on Dal Lake and other water bodies of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Shikaras are of varied sizes and are used for multiple purposes, including transportation of people. A usual shikara seats half-a-dozen people, with the driver paddling at the rear. Like the Venetian gondolas, they are a cultural symbol of Kashmir. Some shikaras are still used for fishing, harvesting aquatic vegetation (usually for fodder), and transport, while most are covered with tarpaulins and are used by tourists. Some are used as floating homes by poor people.

Boats moored....autumn colours around lake Dal in Srinagar, Kashmir Himalayas, India

Dal is a freshwater lake in Srinagar, the capital of the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is integral to tourism and recreation in the Kashmir valley. It is also an important source for commercial operations in fishing and water plant harvesting. The shoreline of the lake, about 15.5 kms, is encompassed by a boulevard lined with several Mughal era gardens, parks, houseboats and hotels. The lake covers an area of 18 sq.kms and is part of a natural wetland which covers 21.1 sq.kms including floating gardens. The floating gardens, known as "Raad" in Kashmiri, blossom with lotus flowers during July and August.

A Shikara ride is a must on a trip to Srinagar. As you sit back and enjoy your ride, floating shops come alongside and you can buy anything from local saffron, Kahwa (Kashmiri tea) , silver trinkets or even succulent kebabs.:-)

A palace floated by in the November morning haze on the Dal Lake. Full Spring seats were guaranteed.
