I managed to squeeze in between the raindrops today in the Columbia Gorge to get in a waterfall picture today. I have struggled over the years to find a way to present this waterfall. I'm getting closer.

We had some rare breaks in the cloud cover a couple of weeks ago - not a whole, sunny day, mind you, but entire minutes that weren't gray and brooding. I happened to be out in the Gorge at the time, so I took a few pictures near Sheppard's Dell where I liked the interplay of light, rock, and trees.

Despite the drought-striken moss and harsh midday light, I was determined to shoot something at my first stop after leaving the airport.

Nice light on a late sunny Saturday afternoon June 18, 2016. My son Scott Dalrymple climbed up the slope to get this view with his iPhone 6s. I did the processing and the crop.

The Shepperd's Dell Bridge was built in 1914 and spans Young Creek on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The bridge is a graceful reinforced concrete deck arch with a main arch span of 100 feet and consists of two parabolic arch ribs with open spandrels. It was designed by K.R. Billner under the supervison of Samuel C. Lancaster. The structure was constructed by the Pacific Bridge Company, Portland, at a cost of $10,800. A stairwell and trail to the Shepperd's Dell Falls is at the east end of the bridge. The Shepperd's Dell Bridge is located in Shepperd's Dell State Natural Area. The land was donated as parkland by the owner, George Shepperd, a local farmer in memory of his wife. Upstream of the bridge lies Bishops Cap, a once-spectacular basalt feature on the side of the Historic Highway. (More here columbiariverimages.com/Regions/Places/shepperds_dell.html ).

This is Bishops Cap be sure not to miss it as you drive the Historic Columbia River Highway.

"Just beyond the [Shepperds Dell] bridge, Italian stonemasons constructed a retaining wall to hold the fill for the highway, which circumvented Bishop's Cap. The lower portion of the rock was carved away to form a "half-tunnel", which provided clearance needed for vehicular traffic." [Mershon, C.E., 2006, The Columbia River Highway]

(See some old post cards depecting this spot here columbiariverimages.com/Regions/Places/bishops_cap.html ).

My son Scott Dalrymple's unedited handheld iPhone 6s video of the falls at Sheppard's Dell on the Historic Columbia River Highway. Enjoy the soothing sounds recorded on June 18, 2016.

I re-scanned and re-edited the image 1/2/20. What a difference new scanners and editing software can make. The description below is from 2009.

The Columbia Gorge is always great fodder for photographers. Sometimes I like to point my cameras away from the waterfalls and find a different angle.

At Bishops Cap look closely at the border between the highway and the retaining wall. The "Guard Rocks" are large chunks of basalt and, as you round the curve, there are the iconic rustic arched stone walls that line most of the old road.

The walls are as functional as they are handsome: foremost, they serve as guardrails, designed to keep 1916 Ford Model T drivers on the spectacular new touring road with its perilous cliffs and winding route. But architect Samuel Lancaster also used them to frame the sweeping Gorge views and blend the new roadway into its rugged natural surroundings.

There are three major guardrail designs found along the old highway: the familiar arched stone walls with concrete cap, a lighter concrete arch found on several viaducts and bridges and the standard Oregon Highway Department wood fences of the era — painted white, and found throughout the old highway, but especially east of Hood River. (Learn how they were built here wyeastblog.org/2013/12/15/stone-walls-of-the-columbia-riv... ).

"Shepperd's Dell, on the Columbia River Highway, has been presented to the people of Portland as a permanent playground.

Through the generosity of G. Shepperd, owner of this charming scenic attraction, the place will become the property of the people and its natural beauties will be kept inviolate.

"To Mr. Shepperd the spot has a sentimental as well as a scenic value. He acquired a quarter section of land, including the famous dell, a few years ago. The Columbia Highway then was unthought of and the scenic charm of the little canyon and the waterfall had not been discovered.

He and his wife lived in a little cottage not far from the dell. Both were lovers of nature and on Sundays would go there and sit, charmed by the scenery for hours."

I took this picture 20 years ago with infrared film. I have always liked it, but I struggled on how to present it. I made another try, and I opted for lower contrast. I like it.

The sun was shining in the Columbia Gorge, Oregon: a truely rare sight most of the year. This picture is kind of half dark, half light. I thought that was interesting.

I took a dozen or so shots of Sheppards Dell Falls and couldn't figure out the best angle to capture the Falls so I shot the bridge.

Shepperd's Dell Waterfall, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Oregon.

The Shepperd's Dell Bridge was built in 1914 and spans Young Creek on the Historic Columbia River Highway. The old highway is a magnet for all types of cyclists.

As of November 2013, with a new 1.6-mile section dedicated between Troutdale and Cascade Locks, 62 of the trail’s original 73 miles are open and rideable. Some sections of the route allow both car and bike traffic. Road shoulders are wide in places and non-existent in others. Traffic is usually mild except on summer weekends. This is the last of the pics from my Oregon trip I'm going to post for a while. It's time to return to photographing Illinois for the next few weeks. Hope you all enjoyed these.

The foreground detail got a little crunchy, due I think to shadow reduction in Photoshop. I'll work on that more, but otherwise, it's not a bad picture.

Lens: 50mm Carl Zeiss with a green filter.

For those who've never been here this is a very difficult Falls to capture. A few angles but next to impossible to capture the entire Falls.

I shot this hand held based on estimated exposure. I did it on the fly because the light was fading behind the clouds.

I think that this is the only image in my photostream whch has to be viewed on a black background. It seems to really make a difference. You lose the subtleties otherwise.

Here's my feeble attempt to capture Sheppards Dell Falls. Anyone familiar with this area knows exactly where I stood. Someone mentioned a better place to shoot from which I'll try next time.
