Today we have started a series on the little town of Ross in the Midlands of Tasmania. In the four photographs today I am giving you a glimpse of what this fascinating historic town has to offer.
And talking of Australian history, this photograph tells us a great deal. This used to be the major service depot for Holden cars in the Midlands. For many years now it has been closed. Holden used to be Australia's national car. But when they announced the end of all operations in Australia on 11 December 2013, it really was the end of an era. More than that, it signified to the world that Australia no longer "makes things". Globalism is the new world order (and little did we know how far this idea would be pushed until now).
James Alexander Holden began a saddlery business in South Australia in 1856. From there they moved into upholstery of carriages and early piston engine vehicles in Australia. Ever a company to expand and diversify, Holden then began making body shells in Australia for the American Company General Motors in the 1920s. They also supplied materials for trams in Melbourne.
In 1931 Holden and General Motors merged to become that famous Australian entity, GMH. In 1936 an assembly plant was established at Fisherman's Bend in Melbourne. During the war this plant was converted to wartime production of aircraft.
After WW2 car building started again in earnest. GMH produced Buick, Chevrolet and Vauxhall vehicles under license. But the big step forward for the Australian motor vehicle industry was in 1948.
Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced that GMH would produce the first entirely Australian mass produced car. This was to be known affectionately as the "FX" (as a Nikon user of full frame cameras, I like that). This building would then be one of the earliest Holden service centres in the country, and probably dates from around 1949-50. All these years later it is closed for service, but runs essentially as an antiques shops. And of course even the name "Holden" is no longer going to be used by General Motors. Another chapter of Australia's history comes to an end.

Several other shows/exhibitions were as follows: Functioning Sawmill Demonstrations, Running 1914 400 HP Snow Making Machine Demonstration, Antique Construction Equipment Demonstrations, Model-T Put-Together Demonstration, Daily Antique Tractor Pulls, Kids Pedal Tractor Pulls on Friday & Saturday, Daily Antique Car Parade, Daily Antique Tractor Parade, Florida Flywheeler Antique Engine Club Gift Shop Opened, Huge Flea Market & the Antique Village (was opened) to Wander Through.
This Place is HUGE ! - - One of the attendants told me it is approx 480 ACRES !
Since I arrived about 1:30 in the afternoon, I missed all of these events, which occurred in the morning. I'll be sure to arrive much earlier, when they have their next Show ! ! !

The answer to the question you never asked! One of the joys of adverts such as this in obscure trade journals is discovering 'who did wha?t' or 'who made what?'. So -here are a few well-known signs for well known brands such as the post-top mounted "Shell" sign from a petrol station and the then new design of Briitsh Rail travel agents sign.
As far as I can ascertain ACME Showcards and Signs of Paragon Works on Green Street in Enfield was formed in 1948 and appears to have ceased trading by c1971.

The Soulsby Shell Station in Mount Olive was built in 1926, and was operated continuously until the station closed in 1991. For its 65 years of operation, they sold only Shell gasoline. The station is now a tourist attraction along Old US Route 66.
Mount Olive is a city in Macoupin County. It is located about fifty miles south of Springfield, and about forty miles northeast of St. Louis on I-55. Mount Olive lies along Historic U.S. Route 66. The population was 2,150 at the 2000 census.

This awesome landmark was built in 1934 and first installed on the other side of the Charles River in Boston. It was moved to its current location in Cambridge at the intersection of Magazine St. & Memorial Drive in 1946 and restored using new structure and LED lighting in 2011.
I took both of these photos on Feb. 15th, 2012 when we went to Cambridge with my buddy Ross. That's his 1990 Chevrolet Suburban in the photo on the right, the truck is entirely original except for wear & tear items and it has over 303,000 miles on the odometer!

A Shell gas station at the corner of Décarie Boulevard and Paré Street in the western fringes of the Montreal neighbourhood of Côte-des-Neiges, plus a La Belle Province fast food franchise (the restaurant chain known for their hot dogs, called "Steamies", and Poutine... surprisingly, I can't seem to find an official web site for them, but Wikipedia has a page on La Belle Province), with St. Joseph's Oratory and Mount Royal providing some scenic elements to the background.

I have quite honestly loved the Shell Oil logo since I was a baby in England. It was one of my earliest favourite corporate logos, along with Coca-Cola and Spar (the European convenience store chain with an evergreen logo that I called "The Christmas Tree shop). After I moved to Canada in June 1977, at the age of 2½, I fell in love with Mattel Hot Wheels cars, and, back in the late 1970's and early 1980's, whenever a Hot Wheels playset had a gas station, it featured the Shell logo, so that re-enforced my positive childhood association with the logo, and I still love the Shell logo today, from an aesthetic standpoint. (Shell's close association with Ferrari doesn't exactly hurt its corporate image in my eyes... I put both logos on my Nintendo DS Lite.)
I once uploaded a film photo of this very same Shell station, at the corner of Sainte Catherine Street and Lambert-Closse Street near the old Montreal Forum, that I took back in the autumn of 2003, but this photo shows that this Shell station has since been updated with modern Shell signage.
(Personally, I still prefer seeing the Shell logo on a red background instead of a red outline on a white background, but I guess the white background looks more "modern".)

This Shell station is the one I'd see from the 165 Côte-des-Neiges bus going to and from the (now-defunct) Animate/Anime Central Japanese animation club at Université de Montréal.
This photo itself was taken through the window of a 165 bus.
I like how it's built next to a small cliff, presumably a remnant of when Côte-des-Neiges Road was carved through Mount Royal in the first place.

Best interior shot I could get by sticking my zoom lens on a meshed fence inside a vintage gas station. Whoever owns this station was/is a collector of gas station memorabilia. I loved all the things I found in there.
From up here it looks kind of like a Yellowstone hot spring. We lay out and doze off to the scent of fuel and the white noise of carwashing, borne on road breezes.
Let's buy Doritos at Shell. We can take a dip in the pool to rinse the orange powder off our fingers and mouths.
