A curious artefact of undetermined age, cut into living rock (well, chalk) and decorated with hundreds of square metres of shells in intricate patterns into which a lot of ingenious interpretations can be read. A popular tourist attraction for well over a century, the grotto's splendour has been marred by muck from Victorian lamps and German bombs. Still pretty cool, though.
