I shot this for the Macro Mondays Group, topic: Stripes but decided not to add it there after all.

Indeed , a shell of a building at this point .

This is Nymans and this is a look at the remains after the fire of 1947 .

The present house and garden reflects most strongly the influence of Leonard Messel and his wife Maud who inherited in 1915 and had three children. One of these was Oliver, one of the most creative theatre designers of his day, whose nephew was Lord Snowdon.

In total three generations of the Messel family have lived at Nymans, from the late 1800's until 1947 when the house was tragically destroyed by fire. Subsequently the surviving rooms were still used, occasionally to entertain friends and as a base from which to run the garden. Following Col. Messel's death in 1953, Nymans became one of the first gardens to be transferred to the National Trust. Today the ruined house still provides a romantic background for the garden and the remaining Messel Family rooms are open to the public.

The garden covers approximately 30 acres set on the side of a valley at 500 feet and although partly sheltered by the woods of the Sussex Weald, suffered much damage during the Great Storm of October 1987, loosing 486 mature trees and many of the shrubs. The restoration of the garden continues within the overall plan laid out by Ludwig Messel.

The garden is laid out in a series of rooms the different levels connected by stone steps or grassy slopes, the 'rooms' are separated by hedges walls or trees which provide shelter for the rare and exotic plants for which the garden is renowned. The individual gardens include the Wall Garden (the oldest), The Knot Garden, The Rose Garden, The Top Garden, The Sunk Garden, The Pinetum and several others. The garden has been designed to surprise and inspire all year round but as usual is at its very best in the spring and summer.

Nymans is situated at Handcross in West Sussex, accessed by the A23 and B2114.

A melted and refrozen bowl of water created patterns within itself, mimicking the shells and shapes that were scattered around it.

A lovely collection of shells taken at Anne's Parent's Place on the Eastern Shore...All collected from the Carolinas

One of the buildings near the cathedral is built of stone containing fossilized shells millions of years old, quarried from the region, which is now a long way from the sea.

"Vous pouvez y voir des fossiles de coquillages datant de plusieurs millions d’années. Cette pierre, le grès coquillier, a été extraite dans le Nord du Canton de Vaud. Elle atteste de la présence dans toute la région de vastes mers, il y a fort longtemps."

Fun assortment of shell decor in my bathroom. Have had this shelf for years! Original paint color inspired my bathroom colors which have been this way for over 10 years now....way before the aqua color revolution of today. Maybe it's time for a change?

A very unexpected sight as we stood at the end of Shellness beach looking out at the birds on the mudflats - we turned and saw this dramatic painting of a male marsh harrier - on an old WW2 concrete blockhouse.

The unknown story of the broken sea shells collectors

At Udaypur sea beach (3km from Digha at the Bengal-Orissa state border), hundreds of poor villagers (80% of them are women) gather on a particular time of the day at the peak of the low tide. They all carry a small net basket for collecting broken shells following the line of the waves. When the baskets are half-filled they empty their catch at the beach and go back to the waves again. Finally the shells are packed in bags for selling. After two hours of continuous hard work, two people together can fill only a 30-kg bag selling for INR Rs 30 (USD 50 cents) only.

The shells are rich source of calcium carbonate, use in feeder mainly at the India's growing poultry industry. Also, it has great demand in making the white (lime) paint. Traders and middlemen are always waiting to exploit these poor villagers. They make on-the-spot payment, collect the bags and transport them to the local market for a hefty profit of 300% by selling each bag for at least Rs 120 (USD $ 2).

I personally talked to the shell collectors and found no Govt. intervention to stop this exploitation. The state government can easily intervene by forming a cooperative and collecting the shells themselves by their nodal agencies with a reasonable price.

Beer bottle found along the beach at Eatons Neck among a massive pile of seashells. It really would be interesting to know how old this bottle is that it aquired so many shells/barnicles on it.

A late evening macro shot of the texture on a sea shell. I don't recall where I picked this up

There are always shells washed up on the beach but I seldom photograph them but I could not resist the exquisite markings on these.

I love how little ones get excited at such simple things like finding a shell at the beach.

artistic still life arrangement

(Shells collected on a beach on the Outer Banks, N. Carolina, in the early 1980s.)

I placed these shells on a piece of mat board that had a mottled, metallic surface in shades of gold and bronze that would complement the shells. I don't have a fancy studio or special photo lamps, so I turned off the room lights and placed a trouble light on the table to the right so it would catch the textures of the shells. Because I was taking the shot from above (standing on a chair) I was unable to use a tripod, but I think I caught the details without one.

This has always been one of my favorite still-life photos. I like the light and shadows. I also like the neutral colors and shades of gold.

For a picture based on a poem - A-Shelling Peas by Harry Breaker Morant (114 Pictures in 2014 # 55 & 197/365 in 2014) See first comment box to find out about Harry.

"Now, all the world is green and bright

Outside the latticed pane;

The fields are decked with gold and white,

And Spring has come again.

But though the world be fair without,

With flow'rs and waving trees,

'Tis pleasanter to be about

Where Nell's a-shelling peas.

Her eyes are blue as cloudless skies,

And dimples deck her cheeks;

Whilst soft lights loiter in her eyes

Whene'er she smiles or speaks.

So all the sunlit morning-tide

I dally at mine ease,

To loaf at slender Nelly's side

When Nell's a-shelling peas.

This bard, who sits a-watching Nell,

With fingers white and slim,

Owns up that, as she breaks each shell,

She also "breaks up" him;

And could devoutly drop upon

Submissive, bended knees

To worship Nell with apron on -

A saint a-shelling peas.

The tucked-up muslin sleeves disclose

Her round arms white and bare -

'Tis only "shelling peas" that shows

Those dainty dimples there.

Old earth owns many sights to see

That captivate and please; -

The most bewitching sight for me

Is Nell a-shelling peas."

This is a close-up photo of the concave side of an open clam shell that I placed on a coastal rock. The two halves remind me of the pareidolia faces of two crooners singing with their eyes closed.
